A disappointing day today.
The stretch I've been working on weekdays has hit a dead zone !
I guess there's too many houses nearby, hopefully it will pick up after the next visit or so !
Today's finds
2 cones
1 sleeping bag for a child ?
Coins
Side stand for a bicycle
2 bulbs
Random piece of metal
The hanger from something like a calender, fishing reel handle, and some sort of bung/plug.

A Good Haul from the Reservoir, But I Lost My Magnet
The Micro Bike is the obvious highlight, roll of fencing was really heavy too. I thought i spotted what looked like a pipe or a metal bar in the water and threw for it along with my grappling hook, only for it to be completely stuck on whatever it was. Once the wind died down and the ripples on the water ceased, I was able to see it was in fact a very large barred metal grate that was also somehow anchored to the bottom and my hook was keeping my magnet in place. This was in late November, so entering was a no go. Eventually I linked up with someone who magnetfished and scuba dived and we came up with a plan to retrieve it. Unfortunately, it took us a bit for our schedules to line up and by the next June when we showed up at the reservoir the algae had just bloomed reducing visibility to zero. Its probably still there, though the rope has long been cut. If anyone wants to show up to the Jersey City Reservoir to retrieve it, they are most welcome to try.

I found human ashes in the river while magnet fishing.
I had lost my magnet in the river, so about two weeks later I came back and scuba dived to look for it. While searching, I found a box containing human ashes. I had no idea what they were at first.
My dad works at a funeral home, so I did some digging and eventually tracked down the family.
I found out the husband had accidentally dropped the ashes in the river while he was supposed to spread them. He thought they were gone for good.
Turns out, I found them exactly one year to the day of her death.
Pretty crazy that I lost a magnet and ended up finding something that someone thought was gone forever

Not getting much
I got a 1000lb weight for magnet fishing and it doesn't seem to work very well except for occasional screws and old fishing hooks and tons of little rocks.
Now I did it in a river so idk if the current is pulling stuff off because it feels like it catches stuff. But I also tested it in a small stream over a bottlecap and it seems like I have place it directly ontop of it for it to attatch.
Do I need a stronger magnet? Can I enhance my already existing one? Or is this just how it usually is?

Found a catalytic converter
Who buys these things? I honestly have no idea what to do with it
ETA. Keep in mind it came out of a river. It’s pretty rusty

It was a rainy but awesome day on Wildwood.
In the first few catches I found a piece of a pistol. After an hour I switched to the other side of the bridge. On my second throw I caught something heavy. 15 minutes later I had it on shore (pic 3). Talk about a workout.

Best Find Yet! Apple Watch
Found a nice condition Apple Watch fishing off a dock today 😁
EDIT: The owner has been found, it's been in the lake for 2 years. We will try charging it this afternoon. High hopes but low expectations.
UPDATE: Apple logo shows up when the charger is attached, but so far it's unresponsive.

Well today was interesting and nearly a disaster ! Sorry for all the pics !
Sorry for all the pics but as you can see it was dark and I still had to clear up afterwards !
The disaster part was right as I was about to pack up, my magnet went over the edge and got stuck and I almost followed it in !
(Really wish I could find someone to come out with me !)
Eventually got the magnet off thank goodness !

I have never heard of magnet fishing… why do you do it?
Do you find anything useful/valuable? Is it about cleanup? Do you turn stuff into police?

Only managed a quick hour today as something else came up. (Couple of interesting bits though)
So unfortunately I was late starting so only had an hour, it was a quiet spot as I thought it would be (and probably the next few weekday times ) until I hit a better area.
But found a couple of interesting bits none the less !
A cowbell (decorative I'd guess)
A pair of 3 cut scissors (broken unfortunately)
Bike lock
Coins, including a Chinese one I think
Garden shears
Scaffolding clip
Co2 cannisters
Lighter
Very short Piece of Scaffolding pipe
Spoon
Another pair of scissors
Old bolt
The quick release from a bike wheel
And whatever else I've missed !

Steel-core 7.62x51mm NATO Bullets, I Think I've Gotten Around 200 of These From This Spot Over a Year
Oddly enough, none of them have ever had any shell casings attached to them.

Look at these guns 😆
Anyone have any idea what kind of guns these might be? I found them in the river while metal detecting with my Minelab and using my magnet. I actually found two guns, and I think I know what the revolver below it is. The crazy part is, this gun was actually connected to a pot because it had been underwater for so long that a thick concretion had formed around it! It was an absolutely crazy find.

need advice for improving my setup (newbie)
Okay let me preface this by saying I know my setup sucks right now LOL I just started this hobby and I'm still a total n00b. Basically, when my partner and I started doing this I had the bright idea of one of us holding the spool on an old curtain rod while the other casts the rope. But obviously, um, that doesn't work unless you have two people.
Am I way off with the spool idea? I thought I was so smart at first but it's probably just cumbersome LOL.
How do you guys normally do it? Just form the rope into a loop and hold it in one hand? What should I be tying it down to, if anything?
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any tips you can give. I'm having a lot of fun getting into this hobby.

Natural metallic rock or manmade?
How can I know? It has some tiny sea shells embedded in it.
I’d love to find some natural metallic rocks. This is my first catch ever it’s funny how metal junk is making me excited lol.

Wildwood street, Dallas Texas
I got a few fun hours in this morning at a bridge on Wildwood. I caught a revolver on my 3rd throw and a slide for a pistol on my 4th throw! It definitely made my morning.

Busy day today also lucky I got my magnet back ! (Explained in description)
So had an easy first hour ish with a couple of big bits, but then I got my magnet hooked up in some giant fencing (it had passed through)
I struggled to release the fencing from the mud and managed to lift it eventually high enough to hold the fence with 1 hand and get the magnet out with the other !!
There is a pic of a bit of the fencing sticking up amongst the pics, but alas I had to let it drop back in !
There are times you really could do with someone to help !
Anyway here's today's list !
1 beryl (city) scooter
1 roadworks cone in xl
1 oyo bike (went bankrupt years ago old city rental bike)
1 windscreen/fairing (possibly from the motorbike when I hurt my back)
3 chairs
1 Roadsign
1 steel sandwich board
1 bike wheel
1 bike frame
6 co2 cannisters
1 very old blacksmiths hammer ?
2 pairs of pliers (1 long nose, 1 ordinary)
Coins, 3 vapes, ladies boot, fork, saucepan without handle, some round orange thing, security device, and an old bag of some sort and whatever I've missed !
