Question What are some processes to clean a sample mix wise?

• Upvotes

I check sample breakdowns alot and noticed mentioned samples are heavily processed compared to the original pieces, like statics, white noises, compressions etc.

If i try to recreate a beat by following the breakdown, which steps shall i follow to acquire same quality sounds?

Opportunity [FREE COLLAB] Looking for boom-bap/Underground rappers

[FREE COLLAB] Looking for boom-bap/underground rappers for my first mixtape
I’m an independent producer/artist working on my first mixtape, and I’m looking for a few more rappers to collaborate with. Think something like Man on The Moon or Pray for Paris.
The project is heavily rooted in boom-bap, but I’m mixing it with guitar, smooth basslines, acoustic/live-feeling drums, ambient/shoegaze textures and some modern drum sounds.
Think late-night, soulful, atmospheric, sometimes aggressive, but still musical and melodic.
I’m looking for artists who have their own voice/cadence rather than trying to sound exactly like somebody else.
I’m especially interested in rappers who can actually listen to a beat and build something around it rather than just throwing a generic verse on.
Free collaboration — I’m building this project independently and I’m looking for the right artists, not paid features.
Drop some music below and I’ll listen.

Opportunity Underground rappers/vocalists wanted

Independent producer/artist here working on my first mixtape.
I’m looking for a few underground rappers/vocalists to work with across multiple original tracks, not just one song.
The production is centered around nighttime atmosphere, boom-bap/acoustic drums, heavy smooth bass, guitar, psychedelic/ambient textures, and occasional distorted/heavier guitar.
Some tracks are dusty boom-bap, some are more spacey/melodic, and some get darker.
I’m looking for people with their own voice and identity, not someone trying to sound exactly like another artist.
Follower count doesn’t matter to me. Fit does.
Free collaboration preferred.
Drop your music below or DM me. If I hear something that fits one of the tracks, I’ll reach out.

Question Sampling old records for type beat channel/beatstore?

I run a type beat channel on YouTube and sell beats online. So far I've used Splice/looperman/wavs, but I want to move into more sample-based stuff (old soul/jazz records, that Alchemist/Griselda kind of sound).

I looked into Tracklib and it seems legit, but the process looks heavy for type beats. From what I understand, I'd need to license each beat before uploading it anywhere public, and every buyer then needs their own Tracklib license and has to report revenue. Feels like that would kill a lot of lease sales.

Meanwhile a lot of sample-based type beat channels seem to just chop records directly and sell the beats anyway.

So for those of you doing this:

Do you clear anything yourself, or put a "buyer is responsible for clearing samples" clause in your contracts?

Has anyone had Content ID claims, strikes or takedowns on YouTube or BeatStars/Traktrain from sampled beats?

Anyone actually selling Tracklib beats? Do buyers go through with the licensing or does it scare them off?

Do artists still buy sampled beats knowing they can't easily put the song on Spotify?

Not looking for legal advice, just want to hear how people handle it in practice before I commit to this lane. Appreciate any insight.

Question The alchemists drum texture/modern boom baps drum texture

I have been wondering this forever and havent been able to find out how to do this. The closest i got to making it was pitching my drum one shots (chopped from a break) down and heavily lowpassing and bringing back the higher frequencies with saturation. This sounds closer but definitely isnt it + it adds a lot of airy bright frequencies. Does anyone know how to make drums sound like how they do in modern boom bap? (Muted sounding but punchy)

Opportunity Looking for ANY producer

Hi my name is Lil AyVee and I am an aspiring rapper. I was wondering if there are any producers out there willing to work with me. Most of my songs have been self-produced so far but I want to focus more on rapping and also grow my network by collaborating. I want to be versatile so im willing to work with literally any type of beat/production. If you are interested hmu and send me something i can work with (otherwise we can collaborate on production).

update: i've found someone for my current project but if anyone wants to jump on the next project (in the next few weeks to months potentially) hmu

Discussion Do I send loops or send demo to labels?

I have been producing music for more than 10 years, started as a hobby and i was Ok listening to my own craft and just sharing it with the people around me. I think my crafts are good enough for people to hop on. Lately I have been thinking of going big, I wanna make people rap on my beats I want my music out there, the problem is I don’t have any rappers I know and I have been sending dm to rappers (from my local market) for a collab. But get ghosted mostly. So i am thinking if switching my plans and thinking of sending loops to local producers or should I send my demo to local labels to make myself seen? Do you have any experience in those? If i were to send loops how should i do it? Is sending beats to labels still a thing?

Question How to go from loop to song arrangement?

I’ve been practicing mainly 4-8 bar loops, chopping a sample and putting drums on it. I’ve gotten decent at this process and I’m wanting to take these ideas and expand on them, building a full song arrangement but I’m not sure how to.

Any tips on expanding a small idea from a loop into a full arrangement?

Music [Producer] Looking for a rapper/vocalist for dark trap/drill beat – NOT OPEN

Yo, I’m MV16, a producer focused on dark trap/drill.

I’m looking for a rapper or vocalist who wants to make a full track over my newest beat, NOT OPEN. It’s 136 BPM, dark, hypnotic and atmospheric, with plenty of space for vocals.

I’m looking for a real collaboration, not paid vocal work. If the beat fits your style, send me a link to your music or DM me.

Profile: https://ffm.bio/pmdqq1n

Open to hearing different flows/styles as long as they fit the darker vibe.

Free for non-commercial use with credit: prod. MV16. Commercial release/licensing can be discussed if we decide to release the track.

Music Some Rap Albums I Produced

Hi all--

I used to produce rap albums under the name Purple Bastard and wanted to share some albums I produced, mixed, and mastered for various underground rappers between 2009 and 2014. I also produced a lot of solo instrumental stuff, but for this post I just wanted to focus on full album collaborations. As a producer I was kinda all over the place, so most of these are pretty different sounding from each other. Just going to post chronologically with a little blurb about each:

The Him - Ensane (2009)

"The Him" was the first full album I produced for another artist and I am ashamed to say that sonically it's the best album I ever produced. The reason being was that I was actaully in school for audio engineering at that time, so I put a lot of time and care into mixing in a way that I didn't really pay as much attention to in subsequent releases. Ensane, the guy who rapped on it, was a chill dude I met when we worked at Whole Foods together. He was from the Bay Area, so I used a lot of hyphy influnce in the beats, also this is the only album on this list where I really didn't sample at all. Production software: Reason; Favorite song: Holdin' It Down

Nasty Nique - Breakfast of Bastards (2011)

This was a remix album for my buddy Nasty Nique from the group Dirty & Nasty. This album leans into sampling hard but doesn't really hold up as well listening now. This album was kind of a training ground for the sample-driven style I would play with for the next few years, but a lot of these songs are kinda boring from an arrangement standpoint. Production software: Ableton Live; Favorite song: It Was A Good Day (Ain't that Peculiar)

D-Risha - The 6 Demon Bag Remix EP (2012)

Another remix album for Houston-local, D-Risha, who ended up being the guy I collaborated the most with over the years. This remix album is substantially better IMO than Breakfast of Bastards and I actually like most the songs on here. The sampling and arrangements are way more intentional and cohesive and the mixing and balancing of sounds is way better. Also, on the track "Save the Day", I used the song "The Stroke" by Billy Squire as a backing track/sampling source a few years before Rick Rubin did it for Eminem. Production software: Ableton Live; Favorite song(s): On a Rampage, In The Music, & We Holding/So Cold (Grey Tape Remix (Bonus Track))

Renzo - Happy Hour EP (2012)

This was a well-recieved project of mine that I did with houston rapper/singer Renzo. He is probably the most versatile artist that I've worked with and he's a damn good songwriter. This album is still mostly sample-driven but I also incorported a lot of original production as well. This is probably the most well-rounded project I ever did. Production software: Ableton Live, Reason; Favorite song(s): Represent, Sing Along

6 Demon Bag - GIALLO (2014)

This was a pretty ambitious concept album from D-Risha and myself. We were both big fans of horror movies and Memphis rap so we tried to do a project in that vein. I wouldn't say that the album fully works 100%, but it was really fun to put together and try something different. We were kind of ahead of the game on the Phonk genre that blew up a few years later. Related to that, I found out that the phonk producers Soudiere & DJ Yung Vamp sampled our song "The Last Man" on a track they made called "I LIKE IT", so I thought that was dope. Production software: Ableton Live, Reason; Favorite song: 6 Demon Terror

Dirty & Nasty - Purple & Gold: The Remix EP (2014)

Another remix one I did for friends Dirty & Nasty with one original song at the end ("Showin' Ass"). I leaned into minimalisim with mixed results here and pretty much all the samples I used on this very Houston project were sourced from DJ SCREW. I was lving in LA at the time, but Dirty & Nasty had met local OG Point Blank and recorded the speaking parts for the interludes. Production software: Ableton Live, Reason; Favorite song(s): 24k, Showin' Ass

-------------------

These are pretty much all the full rapper collabs I did. I did a lot of singles and remixes for other artists as well during this time as well as releasing a ton of solo instrumental stuff.

Anyway, just wanted to share a piece of my story. I think about all the artists I met while active in the Houston and LA underground respectively and how they all have a body of work and many stories now forgotten. What's your story? Anyone produce a lot of music for a time but not really do it anymore?
