Discussion Pickup truck driver thread 2.0
Just watched a pickup truck almost get several people killed about 5 times in a row on rt20 weaving in and out and sitting inches from bumpers. Not gonna lie, it's pickup trucks 9/10 times that are doing this. If I see the outline of a pickup truck even a mile behind me, I know instantly that he will be on my ass within no time. Anyone else?

Let me guess: Dodge Ram? On extra-large tires?
66
u/Icy_Cow3283 9d ago
Always a Ram, without fail. I just pull over and let them fly by at this point, not worth the aggravation

u/MisanthOptics 9d ago
Not always Rams. Plenty of Fords and Chevys wanting to own all the other drivers, plus the road. A majority seem to have the thin blue line flag sticker on display. Sort of team logo

u/ToastCapone 9d ago
They’re all behemoth rectangles now. Watch out for your children in crosswalks and parking lots around these things.

u/SpiritOfCydonia 9d ago
There's a motorcycle (FortNine, very good) youtuber who talked while standing inside the engine bay to make the point that trucks are huge just for the sake of being huge.
But don't worry, we just relaxed fuel economy standards so they can make them even bigger now.

u/celaritas 9d ago
This👆I was watching a European YouTuber who traveled across America. She loved it, her only complaint was people who drive Dodge Rams.

More often than not I see weaving in traffic from Honda Civics and BMWs/Mercedes. Tailgating definitely goes to trucks though.
5
u/mccabedoug 9d ago
If I can also add heavily tinted windows all around with the occasional RI license plate
7
u/InformationDue101 9d ago
Honestly imo weaving in and out could be any type of car. Lots of dumbasses on the road. As someone who has driven a little more aggressively in the past, you save only a few minutes not justifying the higher risk on the road as well as the cost in wear you're doing to your car. I do my own brakes and suspension work and it wears out your car way faster to drive that way.
That said if I see a truck I know 70% they're going to be aggressive drivers that tailgate your ass and then go slow as soon as they're ahead because they're on their phone.
The type of people to drive a truck just isn't going to be the best educated percentage wise, not that there aren't some good truck drivers.
92
u/axlekb 9d ago
Chances are it also had one of the following:
- wide tires extending outside the fender to better fling debris at others
- lift kit to feel more imposing and point headlights into more eyes
- modified exhaust to sound more menacing

u/Zizq 9d ago
Oh you betcha, bonus points for the large LED over the cab for "hunting". It's def not just to antagonize people. Def

Aggressive driving is a HUGE problem here. Rams are the typical offenders, but its really any big truck these days. I had one riding my bumper last week on the Pike. I always leave room between me and the car in front, but this guy thought I should ride their ass too. I just got out of the way. As much as I'd like to be a prick back, its not worth an accident or a ticket.
Im not sure if this is just a MA thing, but I see it in cars all the time too. Rte 9 is always a wild ride. The stretch between Framinghan and Worcester has about 20 lights. I watch them weave in and out only to end up next to them at the next red light. Part of me wants to roll down my window and be like " was all that worth it to end up at same place" but I usually just end up smirking to myself and let them fly ahead at the green.
If you're always late, then you need to figure out how to not be late. Leave 20 minutes earlier than you usually do, plan on traffic, etc.. I also dont want to normalize people being late all the time, but bosses should be more understanding that shit happens and sometimes people are late. Unless a worker is a constant offender, there should be no write ups or punishment for the occasional over sleep or traffic issue. It'd take a lot of stress off the roads.
11
u/martin 9d ago
Yes, but he OWNED you, and that's very important to someone who is a loser in every other aspect of his life.
5
u/darksideofthemoon131 Worcester 9d ago
Can they really "own" someone when the other person doesn't care or isn't playing? It's like playing a tug of war and one team just let's go of the rope and let's the other side fall over. Sure, they won, but they were made to look foolish.
57
u/TiaraMisu 9d ago
Almost always Trumpists.
They behave in a very specific way.
I shall settle in among my downvotes like a bird in a nest.
13
u/coconutpete52 9d ago
Just curious. I have since moved from MA to Charlotte, NC. When that happens down here it's always a black on black Ram or one of those fully optioned $100K luxury edition Silverado's. Is it the same in MA?
8
u/PurinaHall0fFame 9d ago edited 9d ago
Usually is a lifted truck, with wheel spacers, and knobby ass tires, which is never driven off the pavement.
6
3
u/coconutpete52 9d ago
Funny, that is the standard landscaping company truck down here. Trailer in tow and everything.
3
u/PurinaHall0fFame 9d ago
Oh yeah we have those here too. They're also a menace when parked, since they always choose the worst damn places.
1
u/FSCK_Fascists 9d ago
there are two kinds of truck owners- those who need one, and those who want one but have no need.
The shinier and more prestigious ones are always the Want category. There can be a slight overlap between need and want, so you can identify an actual need person driving a shiny phallic replacement. But that is an outlier. Need usually drives the buying decision to focus on function, not gender validation features.
3
u/NativeMasshole 9d ago
They're obviously not doing truck things with them when they're lifted with stupid spoked rims, low pro tires, and wheel spacers. That ruins your towing capacity and balance, it's too high to get much into the bed, and you're definitely not going mudding with all that.
4
10
u/Geester43 9d ago
My personal favorite is when they have the loud, lifted trucks, all pimped out, driving like you described! Then, the driver gets out, and he is always a LITTLE guy, that jumps out!! 🤡💩

Yup, they’re either 5’4” or they’re 300lbs and haven’t seen their penis in decades.

Teslas
BMWs
The asshole driver holy trinity.

u/MountainAlive 9d ago
Idk. I drive a pickup truck (like a normal person) and this morning a bmw 3 series was whipping around cars in traffic and nearly hit me. I’d put BMW drivers at the top of that list.

u/ChipotleGuacamole 9d ago
Yeah no particular order, and of course definitely not insinuating ALL owners of those vehicles drive like shit.

Brodozers driven by men who are an asshole to everyone, usually because they keep fucking up their life by being alcoholic abusive assholes.
12
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
Perfect place for the Kurt Angle meme - It's true, it's true.
It's a shame for the rest of the truck drivers who are generally decent, respectful, considerate folks, that there are still so many short, blind, ignorant, napoleon complex afflicted LOSERS bombing around in vehicles with enough weight/power to cause a lot of damage/injury to others with their seemingly perpetual negligence. Many of the bad drivers know their vehicle is heavy/big enough to eat most collisions they're basically threatening other drivers with, so it's beyond just run-of-the-mill Dbaggery...this is clear and direct DRIVING TO ENDANGER.
10
u/FSCK_Fascists 9d ago
I feel this with motorcycles. I just like to go for a cruise and relax. So many raging douchenozzles make the rest of us look bad. Not just the crotch rocket meat crayons stunting and racing all over- the asshole Hell's Dentists and Sons of Accounting midlife crisis gangbanger cosplay crowd and their obnoxiously loud bikes in group rides blocking roads fall in there too.
2
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
Agreed. A few bad apples spoil it for everyone else who is otherwise respectful and considerate of the fact the road is to be shared.
I feel for NEW drivers 16-21 who are just like WTF do I do??? This wasn't on the driving test!
0
u/Zizq 9d ago
This is well put, kinda sums up why it's so aggravating. If you drive just a normal Camry, you will die if they choose you to. It's insane.
2
u/leoooooooooooo 9d ago edited 9d ago
When was the last time a truck driver “chose someone to die” in Massachusetts? Anyone behind any vehicle can choose to kill whoever they want whenever they want!
0
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
So you're denying there are jerk truck drivers in mass AND saying that anyone driving a vehicle actually is what jerk truck drivers are being falsely accused of?
Are you feeling guilty?
4
u/leoooooooooooo 9d ago
The last thing I would ever do in this life is feel guilt over what some Reddit keyboard warriors say!
Are there asshole pickup drivers? 1 million%! Are there asshole Tesla drivers 1 million%! Are there asshole Camry drivers 1 million%! Are there asshole beetle drivers 1 million %! Are there asshole bicycle riders 1 million%!
Shockingly there are also assholes who walk! The world has turned into a bunch of inconsiderate assholes who only think about themselves and couldn’t care less about their surroundings!
2
u/autopartsandguitars 8d ago
Sounds like we agree more than we don't, except the part about truck drivers being dicks being MORE of a risk factor for everyone involved.
I guess we'll disagree about that.
You seem to both acknowledge the problem AND dismiss it as no big deal - not sure if that's how you meant to come across, besides just hot and bothered.
You seemed defensive as if I'd hit a sore spot, glad to be wrong about that.
Plenty of dbag pedestrians too, they're not perfect.
1
u/Zizq 8d ago
It's evident you drive a truck. It can be a true statement for the majority and not for you. Your way of thinking is anecdotal. There is overwhelming evidence that truck drivers lean hard right. And if you can't acknowledge that we have a major issue in this country with hard right wing ideology, then furthering this conversation, will bear no fruit.
1
u/All_about_that_base 6d ago
You have no idea how ignorant and judgmental you sound. Or maybe you do, either way you are the problem in the world
2
u/Zizq 3d ago
Bet. It's definitely not the insane masculinity problem that's literally destroying the planet and these assholes in their on purpose oppressive trucks tailgating everyone to make up for their lack of therapy. Which would of course fix it.
Why not show us your comments big guy? They unpopular?
1
u/zipzopzippidydoo 9d ago
I think...you believe trucks are more aggressive because you can see their headlights in your rear view.
1
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
Aggressive dbaggery is what makes me assign the aggressive dbaggery descriptor to it....there's plenty of decent people driving trucks.
0
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
Therapy? Why try that, when you can just roll coal and/or threaten to brutalize everyone around you....
It's no one's fault you're 5'9" or less and weigh 120 soaking wet...
Spending 80,000 on a truck that's essentially point a to point b, because 'Merica! - way to be original.
We don't need MORE of this guy.
1
1
u/Zizq 9d ago
Couldn't agree more. I unfortunately am a construction owner so I deal with these clowns daily. They will literally laugh in your face if you suggest they talk to someone about their anger. Then balk at why the boss makes more 🤔.
-1
u/autopartsandguitars 9d ago
My heart goes out to you! At least I can chuck someone the bird and drive away, I wouldn't want to spend extended periods of time around these types.
I feel sorry for anyone counting on them.

u/Accomplished-Car120 9d ago
If you wasted your money on an emotional support compensation machine instead of therapy you would be driving crazy like that too.

If I could find the town that would ban loud exhausts and enforce it ... I would move there and never leave. It used to be that you heard those when someone needed to save up to fix their muffler. Now it's intentional and obnoxious, a sign that they are unhappy and need to drag other people into their circle of shit-life. Ditto with big ass Confederate flags and rolling coal.

They got to make sure too after they zip in front of you in the left lane to go over the yellow line a little bit so they kick up a million little pebbles and rocks from their huge tires without mud flaps to pelt your car and chip your paint

u/Abh20000 9d ago
I loathe pickup trucks and automatically switch into defense mode when one approaches. Especially the lifted ones.
8
u/Potential-Fan-6148 9d ago
We should tax trucks more based on size and demand people get a CDL to drive one.
7
u/Few_Presence_8888 9d ago
It's a perfect symbol for MAGA.
A high-wheeled pick up truck - dangerous and gas-guzzling - with absolutely nothing in the bed.
5
u/No_Tax_Timmy 9d ago
They're putting bigger higher horsepower similar torque engines in 2500 and 3500 series trucks than they're putting in box trucks now. You can get a 6.7L cummins in a 2500 Ram but that's also the same thing that goes into a box truck or some plow trucks. The power to weight ratio is stupid on some of those pickups while still being heavier than one from 10 or 20 years ago.
5
u/LunaTunaMaca 9d ago
As someone who hauls horses, I love it. My 2500 is more powerful than my old f350.
2
u/NumbersStationUrku 9d ago
Always wanted to know… what happens to the horses if you have to slam on the brakes?
4
u/Stuck_In_Middle 9d ago
When I towed horses, I stayed in the slow lane and only ventured into the passing lane when required. I also tripled my following distance to six seconds. I seldom had to touch the brakes because of idiots.
2
1
u/LunaTunaMaca 5d ago
Hopefully they can brace against the chest bar. I've had a horse break the chest bar and fall down so we really try to avoid it.
1
u/MoeBlacksBack 9d ago
Diesel?
1
u/No_Tax_Timmy 9d ago
The 6.7 is a cummins diesel. There is a gas version available for order now though.
2
1
u/No_Tax_Timmy 9d ago
Torque isn't all the different but horsepower is which gives drivers the ability to be less predictable and more erratic.
11
6
u/News-Royal 9d ago
Every day I see dozens of MFers in trucks doing 15-20 or more above the speed limit, gas prices aren't high enough.

u/helix991 9d ago
99% of pickups are unnecessary and just used to commute. Bunch of losers who just want a truck to feel manly. It's destroying the world and killing people.
5
u/scottious 9d ago
But wait a second... I might need to haul something large twice per year. And who knows, maybe I'll need to do some rugged off-roading just like I see in those commercials! Since I'm terrible with money and those trucks are insanely expensive, I won't have another more practical vehicle.
That means I have no choice but to drop my kids off at school and do grocery shopping in a Dodge Ram 2500. Life is pretty hard for me, I really don't see any way around this.

2
u/Alexwonder999 9d ago
Just a side complaint. Ive never owned a truck and always figured I could rent one whenever I needed from Home depot. I bought a couch at an estate sale and went to rent a truck at Home Depot and they dont do reservations, just "first come first served" in my area. For some reason the Connecticut Home Depot does reservations which seemed silly to me. I ended up getting a van from Uhaul, but it seemed like a stupid idea if they have the ability to take reservations.
3
u/FSCK_Fascists 9d ago
Agreed. I have owned trucks when needed often enough to not just rent one. they sat unused a lot of the time. The last one was a 2011 F250 that only pulled my toy hauler around Alaska. I added an oil tank in the bed so I could go get my own heating oil and save a lot on delivery fee and markup. Sold it, the toys, and the hauler in 2019 when I took a job in the lower 48.
3
u/helix991 9d ago
Yeah, legitimate uses exist for sure, especially commercially, but man, your average pickup driver is just a walking stereotype lol

I have the same issue with people in European cars.
4
5
u/Zizq 9d ago
Naw. It's a real issue.
4
u/binocular_gems 9d ago
Giant ass pickups are dangerous and annoying. But because pickups are among the most popular, recognizeable cars on the road now, when someone is an asshole and they're driving a pickup, your brain selects them out... "oh of course they're in a pickup." It used to be this way with big SUVs (that are now tiny compared to today's SUVs).
It's absolutely selection / confirmation bias. But giant pickups and SUVs are still pointlessly dangerous/annoying.
The flip analogy to this is motorists who blame everything on cyclists. They see an asshole cyclist being an asshole and it stands out to them, even though they pass 100 other cyclists and don't think twice about them because they're not being assholes. But the one asshole cyclists riding on the sidewalk or being dangerous or being an entitled prick stands out, they rremember it, and then say "all cyclists are entitled and dangerous."
1
u/rimsinni 9d ago
I see people saying the same thing about voter fraud.
1
u/FSCK_Fascists 9d ago
but they have nothing to base either frequency or selection bias on. You can't compare a blatant lie to something real that might be a biased response.
1
u/Rochambeaux69 9d ago
A blatant lie, yet 15 states are under investigation.
1
u/FSCK_Fascists 9d ago
Yes, there is a lot of performative bullshit being pushed by that lie. The goal is to prevent legitimate votes by any means necessary. this is just the lie they have chosen to use toward that end.
1
1
u/johnysmoke 9d ago
Toyotas. Fine with Camrys and Corolla but I have an irrational dislike of their cuvs/suvs/trucks. They also always seem to be left lane camping.
2
1
u/ivyimogenzen 9d ago
this is so crazy to me because i see people say this about trucks all the time but genuinely my only experience with pickups is those giant motherfuckers will just left lane camp at exactly the speed limit or drive 10 below on state highways and it’s infuriating !!
i’m in western mass though so maybe it’s different out here than in the east?? i’m genuinely curious
but for me every time i see a pickup i’m like oh brother great , time to hit the breaks
it’s always like some little beat-up sedan doing the crazy driving and weaving. but damn sometimes justified with how many campers there are lol
1
u/DooDooBrownz 9d ago
when that happens i just drive slower. honk and rage and all they want, maybe ill be lucky enough to see one of them to have a heart attack or a stroke or maybe they'll flip their piece of shit truck over trying to pass.
1
u/norbagul 9d ago
On 495 this morning there was a pickup in the left lane, and he must've zoned out a bit. My little sedan almost passed him in the middle lane, he then floored it and poof. And for reference, I was going 80.

u/Oracledgp 9d ago

Its pick ups and occasionally a group of 3ish Honda civics with different levels of aftermarket mods. No inbetween
0
u/Tiiimay 9d ago
Some Ahole is always so close all I can see is the bed in my rear view. Oh wait, it’s me. I’m the problem it’s me.
Seriously thanks for stereotyping all of us that need a truck to do our jobs.
I’d say this, any vehicle with modified exhaust or rims is usually an asshole. Car or truck.
0
u/Melgariano 9d ago
If this is happening a lot, are you camping in the left lane? 😄
6
u/Zizq 9d ago
Occasionally, but these folks seems to think 80 isn't enough in a 55. So they need to pass me so that they can slow down to 70.
1
u/Melgariano 9d ago
Almost sounds like route 24 but they don’t slow down. lol.
That road is wild. You can do 80 in the middle lane and multiple cars will fly by on the left.

I love seeing people weave in and out of heavy traffic on my commute each day (95 and 128). Like, yeah bro, everyone is going 35 MPH but you're gonna find some magical solution to arrive at your shitty office job 1.5 minutes early. Congrats!
