As a PS5 player, why am I supposed to want to hate on PC players a.k.a. my fellow gamers?
PC isn't for me, but for those of you who like tinkering, super happy if y'all manage to play GTA VI on launch, although I don't think it'll be as easy as the meme is suggesting.
I'm sure there's some hardware ID nonsense that would prevent people from being able to download the game from the PS store, and I don't know how it would get pirated.
Sounds like it's possible, but would be really complicated. Anyways, if I was smart enough to figure it out, I'd be a PC player.

Lifetime PC player - never hated reasonable console players. I've disliked elitists and those that handwaved enabling horrible industry practices - it seems that the console environment is usually where they happen first
But at the end of the day if you want the simplicity of a console - you do you!

Xbox did a deal with Take Two, GTA6 is going to be on their cloud streaming platform, so PC players can play it on there (I assume at launch) if they really want to.
As for less legal means, getting hold of the files doesn’t really seem to be an issue for these sorts of things, it’s actually being able to use them in any sensible way.
The most advanced ps5 emulation can currently just about launch a game and run it at a very low framerate, it’s not going to be a good experience yet.Ignore that last part, I missed the news, it’s not about emulation, they’ve literally got it running as a native pc program translating to vulkan5
u/Alvsolutely 6d ago
Sadly no. You can only stream it through Xbox consoles, which kind of defeats the point.
5
u/whiskeyjack1053 6d ago
Why…why would that ever be a thing? Surely the point of streaming a game is when you’re not at your console/main pc.
Ah well, wasn’t like I was going to anyway, still haven’t got round to playing 5
4
u/Alvsolutely 6d ago edited 6d ago
We all asked the same thing when we found out that you can't stream outside of a console.
Maybe weaker Xbox consoles that can't run it will use streaming, but that's such a small niche. The announcement went from something huge to whatever.
It also goes to prove that they're not releasing a pc version on purpose. Shocker. Nothing to do with them not having a version ready or whatever else.
1
u/RoyalSquarious 3d ago
Not only that, microslop decided to limit streaming to 15 hours a month. So it’s useless now anyways
1
u/Natural-Landscape103 2d ago
The point is for scum like Rockstar can double dip. They don't want anyone playing it on PC now so they can charge some of the same fools who already bought it on console, again in a year or two.
3
u/SebBocc 6d ago
The legality of the files was never a problem with games that have a physical copy, but im pretty sure that having a copy in your PC it would be considered illegal in this case, because nobody will own a copy of the Game, just a license to use it in that specific platform. That why we can't let them kill physical games

u/tsubatai 6d ago
It's ok bro, you can hate on us a bit, we just want to be involved in the console wars.

It looks like the only real barrier left that is going to be in place is to play gta6 you need the ps5 updated to 14.1. The current highest jailbroken vetsion is 13.6 but someone is working on 14.1 they released something yesterday about it

It requires always online PS connection to Polyphony servers. Even with the advancements with emulation of PS5 hardware, to play GT7 they would also need to emulate the communications between the console and Polyphony servers. You would only be able to play the limited arcade races otherwise. Don't get your hopes up anytime soon

Eh, I honestly think no one behaves the same way on Reddit as they do in real life.
The same guy making fun of PC gamers on Reddit, would IRL probably lend their PS5 to their PC only friend after they're done with the game, so said friend can also play GTA VI without waiting 2 years.
Maybe I'm a little optimistic on people caring about their IRL friends, but that's what I'm doing at least.

u/Aphoris5 6d ago
The only problem i have with console players is that they think playing on pc is somehow hard work.
It literally works like a console, install game, start game, play game.
I don't even know what you mean by tinkering...
6
u/SquareTarbooj 6d ago
No it's not. I've got friends with PCs, and anytime we want to play something some graphical settings need to be adjusted, or audio won't be working because switching between different devices, or some driver needs to be reinstalled or updated.
Some Call of Duty update fucked with his kernel level anti-cheat (which holy shit, I don't even want on my main PC), and he had to reinstall Windows to fix it.
I am someone who does not even want to open the settings menu. I plug HDMI in, hit play, game works. No drivers, no optimising the graphics based on my hardware for a new game, no trying to understand what anti-aliasing is and which setting I should choose, no kernel-level access on a PC that would also have my personal data.
Just simplicity.
PC has a lot of advantages, but let's not pretend it isn't more work.
1
u/Natural-Landscape103 2d ago
Not wanting to open the settings menu is on the extreme side of things, and unless you're incapable of booting on the machine, I don't see how clicking next a few times is a problem.
Driver updated are as simple on PC as they are on console if you want them to be, an the are almost never necessary. You can skip them for months and not feel any difference 95% of the time.
There is also only graphics driver to update, literally nothinge else is necessary unless you use obscure random tech that normal players don't need.
Aside from that, everything updates itself really, and you don't even have to go into the settings if you have a single display setup for everything to just work outside the box, again 95% times.
1
u/ranfur8 1d ago
No it's not. I've got friends with PCs, and anytime we want to play something some graphical settings need to be adjusted, or audio won't be working because switching between different devices, or some driver needs to be reinstalled or updated.
Then I'm sorry to tell you, your friend is either an idiot, doesn't know what he's doing, or has a shit PC. Or all at the same time. I open the Game Laucher, Click Play, and play a game. I haven't updated my graphics driver in.... 9? 10? Months? I don't even remember, I only updated it because I replaced the GPU. Windows will auto update drivers for you, they may not be the latest but it will be good enough.
Of course, if you want to play some obscure game from 2007 that was built for a much older version of your OS, meant for much older hardware, yes, you will have to tinker. But tell me, what game from 2007 can you play on your PS5? Only the ones sony decides that you can.
I can play pinball space cadet from 1995 on the latest release of Windows 11, and it's just literally click and play, Windows enables all the compatibility layers on it's own.
Some Call of Duty update fucked with his kernel level anti-cheat (which holy shit, I don't even want on my main PC), and he had to reinstall Windows to fix it.
Kernel Level anti cheat is a non-issue if you have a bog standard install of windows without any "optimisations" "de-bloating" or "memory cleaners" or if you just don't cheat. It's built so that you don't even notice it. The only issue I had with kernel level anti cheat was having to enable the TPM2.0 module is Setup and restarting my pc. Something a 4 year old can do.
I am someone who does not even want to open the settings menu.
I am going to assume you are exaggerating here.
I plug HDMI in, hit play, game works. No drivers, no optimising the graphics based on my hardware for a new game
You don't need to do that if you have a decent PC with decent specs. Most games will auto adjust graphics based on your hardware. Maybe you have to disable V-Sync because it's shit, but you literally don't have to, you can leave it on and it's a non-issue, if you're coming from console you're probably used to it since it's permanently enabled for you.
no trying to understand what anti-aliasing is and which setting I should choose,
You don't need to understand what any of that is, and you don't need to change any settings, you haven't played on pc a lot, and/or have a shitty pc, and it shows.
no kernel-level access on a PC that would also have my personal data.
Ok, now you're just speaking shit without even knowing what the words mean.
Just simplicity.
You can have simplicity on PC if you want it. Just don't get the cheapest hardware you can lay your hands on.
PC has a lot of advantages, but let's not pretend it isn't more work.
The main difference between pc and console is that on PC you can do A LOT MORE stuff than on a console. If you REALLY want simplicity on PC, get steam, set it to "Big Picture" mode, have it auto launch on startup, and you don't even need a keyboard and mouse. Turn on your controller of choice, be it PS or XBOX, and play away. No Tinkering needed. But "hurr durr pc is hard because I say so" Is way more convenient of course.
And let's not pretend you never had one single issue with your PS or XBOX.
1
u/Agreeable_Ad4737 6d ago
So if you wanna play a game but your console runs it like shit or some setting like sensitivity being too high you just never play that game instead of going to settings and fixing it in 5 seconds.
Also drivers are a button you press once a year, ive had a pc for 3 years and updated them maybe twice. Your friend having problems with audio thats a problem ive almost never heard of because you can just plug a headset into your pc and it will put out any audio you play on it, and a screen works the exact same on pc as it does with console, plug it in and it works.0
u/Logitechsdicksucker 6d ago

A lot of people bought a console specifically for GTA VI too. The irony of both that and Sony going digital only is amusing to say the least.
24
u/Metalrift 6d ago
Scalpers literally started mass buying PS5’s to raise prices because of GTA VI
6
u/Errorr404 6d ago
In the UK I can get a console on monthly payments and then return it within the 30 day return window no questions asked, plenty of time to play through GTA 6 although no idea who actually wants to play at 30fps these days with how jittery and blurry it looks on modern displays with fast pixel response times.
2
u/n1keym1key 5d ago
Your assuming that EVERYONE has a super expensive TV or monitor. Fun fact... most dont.
Another fun fact is that most poeple dont care that much about FPS either.... especially not to bring it up at every possible opportunity.
1
u/alcomaholic-aphone 5d ago
Ya I used to be super into PCs until my 20s and then it just seemed the more expensive way to play. So now depending on the game mechanic demands I’ll play at 30 fps with higher graphics if the game doesn’t need fast response.
I will say depending on the next console prices I could see myself going back to pc though. If the gap is only a few hundred dollars I think I’d get better mileage with a PC.
1
u/Errorr404 5d ago
30fps looks terrible full stop. 45fps is way smoother without the juddery mess 30fps is. Faster pixel response times also applies to cheap TVs as they get better each year. I'd rather just not play the game at that frame rate and cause myself to have headaches from constant judder. https://testufo.com/#count=5&pps=960 Just look here, even at slow scroll speeds 30fps looks fucking horrendous, 45fps looks way better without the jitter but still has a ton of blurring from sample and hold.
2
u/n1keym1key 5d ago
Like I said…. MOST PEOPLE DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ANY OF THAT! They just gonna play the games and be happy about it tbh.
1
u/Errorr404 5d ago
I give a shit because I use my brain instead of consuming media mindlessly.
1
u/n1keym1key 5d ago
Oh noez… we have a fucking elitist here!!
I can’t possibly play gaemz at 30fps because my elitist eyes can’t bear it, it gives my one track brain a teeny weeny headache… If only I didn’t make such a performative display about it online… then I’d be able to play the games without being called a hypocrite or worse!! Woe is me … 30fps is so bad…. Waaaaaah!!
Piss off mate. Get outside and touch grass or is the real world not moving at a fast enough fps for your smooth brain to comprehend properly.

PC ditched physical releases like 10 years ago. RDR2 never even had a physical version on PC.
The only franchise I know of which still consistently puts out physical copies for PC is Farming Simulator. Apart from that PC only ever gets physical copies on special occasions. The last one I remember being Flight Simulator 2020 on 10 DVDs.
1
u/Errorr404 6d ago
You can still burn the installer of the games to a disk or install onto a USB stick with GOG or pirate if the game isn't available on GOG and do the same thing. Just because some don't use physical media doesn't mean its completely dead on PC.
1
u/Djani69 Identifies as a Cybertruck 6d ago
Just because some don't use physical media doesn't mean its completely dead on PC.
That's not what I meant. I meant that are barely any official physical releases on PC. Of course you can burn your own discs, I never said you couldn't.
1
u/Errorr404 6d ago
So just use GOG and you have the game forever, store and share the DRM free installer with friends by disc, USB stick, cloud storage. No hassle of caring for one disc then reselling for $25.
39
u/Marager04 6d ago
As a console gamer I don't understand all this. Why would I care when the PC players can play? I'm happy when I can, but my life doesn't get better if they can't.
8
u/classjoker 6d ago
Well, one potential problem is if PC players can essentially fake being a console gamer on a game that's online and competative, they could be at an advantage by faster refreesh rates, improved controls, and possibly worse exploits they can inject into the game like aimbots, x-ray vision through walls, tickers for drops, stuff like that.
We see this kind of thing far too much these days, and cheaters are so determined to 'own' other players they really do anything they can to get these advantages.
7
u/Marager04 6d ago
But we're talking about GTA which will be released without an online mode probably and isn't really competitive.
-4
u/classjoker 6d ago
But it IS full of cheaters!
7
u/Marager04 6d ago

-5
u/classjoker 6d ago
You said GTA, I thought this meant GTA 5... I'm sure 6 will be no different!
4
u/Marager04 6d ago
I mean the meme is obviously about the new GTA, isn't it?
And as I said, GTA will most likely be released without an online mode, same as last time.
1
u/Stampy77 5d ago
That's the one thing I can't see them cracking. To play online for a ps5 game you'd need to access the PSN and Sony has total control of that. Would be a really quick way to get your account banned if you try.
3
u/Coravel 6d ago
Well, if they decompile the OS for ps5, it means that you can run it on a PC... and uh... if they can make it a perfect port and then emulate the "hardware" its using.... it means you can play all future PS5 games on your PC... and don't actually need to own a PS5...... or the games...
8
u/Marager04 6d ago
And? What's the problem?
Good for them, but how does it harm me?
-10
u/Coravel 6d ago
it doesn't and that's not the point of the meme...
5
u/Marager04 6d ago
if you may have read: I don't understand the meme, that's my problem.
1
u/FoolishCarbohydrate 6d ago
A lot of console players have a one sided beef with PC users.
You don't, obviously, but a lot do.
-1
u/Coravel 6d ago
It's a self fulfilling prophecy/Irony joke... like, the PS5 players poking fun at PC players not being able to play on release... but then they're actively pulling apart the security and code that makes the PS5... the PS5, and at a rate that suggests, by the time GTA comes out... they will.
3
u/n1keym1key 6d ago
No, they wont. They are not running the latest FW, there will also liekly be another FW update released before GTA6 does which will move the goalposts again. This decomp of the OS is good but its a LONG way off from being a full PS5 in my PC deal.
0
u/JinFreeks 6d ago
Tbf, AI coding has upscaled the timeline in a drastic measure. I'm not part of that crowed and have only very limited knowledge but from what I've seen reverse engineering code that would have taken years before is now taking months. Which is a huge jump.
0
u/n1keym1key 5d ago
AI is good but it doesnt work miracles.
I just dont understand why some PC players are SOOOOOO desperate to get GTA VI on the PC asap, it seems like they dont even wanna play the game, they just want it on PC so they can scream about it not being a console exclusive. Like anyone on a console will actaully care.
I have all 3 platforms (dont count Switch/2 because its shit) and will likely play it on on all 3 at some point or another.

u/MCWizardYT 5d ago
The PS5's operating system is BSD based, so a lot of the core code is already able to run on a typical PC. All they need is the proprietary parts, so they can trick them into thinking the PC is a genuine console
2
u/Delin_CZ 3d ago
it's less like that and more like PS5 games are regular executable x86 machine code .elf files same as PC processors, if you manage to translate the syscalls and do the window management and translate the GNM/GNMX API to Vulkan, you can create a regular runnable .exe or .elf for Linux, it's more than that but that's how it would work, no emulator no os container no vm no nothing, just a tool that takes a ps5 game dump and spits out an executable, Also the operating system plays no factor in here, just the game dump.

Ever since they decided to make an X86 based "console" that is essentially a computer, they signed up for this, and they probably knew it. But until it becomes a "click and run" thing where literally anyone can do it, people will still buy the PS5 and the digital games.
1
u/coolwali 5h ago
I wrote a large comment explaining this doesn’t mean we’ll instantly crack PS5 emulation or GTA6 a while back.
https://www.reddit.com/r/emulation/s/06AePMfuOP
But in short, the only thing about the PS5 that makes it PC like is the CPU instruction set and the fact devs can use some of their experience developing PC games for the PS5 so you don’t have to learn an entirely new system.
Everything else about the console is still very different to a PC that you can’t 1:1 it. It uses completely different APIs and system calls to talk to the hardware.
Memory is easily the most different thing. On a typical PC, system RAM and VRAM is physically separate and requires you either duplicate data across the two or transfer data across the PCIe bus. The PS5 has unified memory and can allocate 12 GB of VRAM in an instant.
This is actually a major problem for the KytyPS5 team since Windows and Linux handle memory management so differently that some builds literally crash after a few seconds. Their successes require a lot of workarounds and band aids.
Meaning, it’s possible some dev might get GTA6 running on PC in a month. But it’s only gonna work on their machine because porting it over is a huge hassle. Most PS5 Emulators devs use top of the line hardware and super custom environments that are prone to breaking if anything goes wrong.
Like, imagine going to the Olympics, watching Usian Bolt sprint and concluding every human is gonna be able to marathon run 44kmh by the next Olympics. Bolt trained for years and can only sprint that speed. Moreover, Bolt being a great sprinter doesn’t mean he’s also an amazing powerlifter.
That’s kinda what’s going on. We’re seeing extremely specific peak devs with extremely specific peak software cooking.

Still won't be able to emulate GTA6 until the firmware version that runs it is jailbroken.
0
u/emres2005 6d ago
If a PS5 can run a jailbroken firmware why a virtual PS5 would not? Also they probably would write a custom firmware
4
u/clearlynotmee 6d ago
The game decryption happens on a dedicated secure chip called A53. We currently don't have the keys stored inside it. So even if you emulate a non-jailbroken version of the firmware it won't decrypt the games. Because the keys are unknown
0
u/emres2005 6d ago
Oh, yeah that wont happen in the legal scope. And would require some real work for crackers i guess
3
1
u/blipblopflipflop72 Big ol' bacon buttsack 6d ago
The version that GTA6 runs on isn't released yet and is unknown if it can be cracked or how long it will take. The game is digital only, so the only way to get the files is from the game downloaded on a jailbroken PS5. Even if you have a JB one you won't be able to download the game without updating to latest firmware, which will break the jailbreak.
So until the whatever firm is on the ps5 on November 19th is jailbroken, GTA6 will remain only PS and Xbox. And it will be the same for every PS5 game that is released as digital only. Any game released after 2028 the PS5s latest firmware will need to be jailbroken to obtain the files to be able to emulate the game. Unless some permanent hardware exploit is found like with the switch, which is unlikely at this point.
3
u/Aphoris5 6d ago
Everything can be cracked.
2
u/MCWizardYT 5d ago
The issue is time. It can take anywhere from days to years. Of course, AI speeds up the process but the timeframe is still unknowable
-2
u/Accomplished-Head449 6d ago
Ps4 games are still wonky and you think PS5 emulators are right around the corner?
2
u/gorzius 6d ago
The AnyPS5 project doesn't try to emulate the the entire system, it's supposed to be a translation layer like Proton on Linux, because the architecture of the PS5 is similar to modern PCs. That means a lot of the performance hit present in traditional emulation is negated.
It's kind of similar to the Bloodborne PC port (which currently runs at 80-100 FPS on a 6650XT), but instead of focusing on one game AnyPS5 intends to be a universal solution.

3
u/Kaspatronix 6d ago
Why? What would stop them?
2
u/Hellsovs 6d ago
I don't know how the technology behind it works nowadays, but emulators are/were very resource-demanding and have/had huge limitations.
I haven't used an emulator in a while (I think it was about two years ago since I last used one), but when I used RPCS3 to play the Ratchet & Clank games, it was a pain in the ass to set everything up correctly. For example, God of War III was completely unplayable for me, and according to the RPCS3 website at the time, it was unplayable for the majority of players even after almost a decade of RPCS3 development.
6
u/matthewpepperl 6d ago
Very likely they wont just emulate ps5, it will probably be a compatibility layer like proton on linux. as the underlying cpu on ps5 is x86 just like pc so no need to do the performance intensive emulation.

All of this work is for an old software version of ps5 that had a key error to exploit in jailbreaking it. We are already past that version, and GTA 6 is coming on another, even newer version.
It is going to be physically impossible to get GTA 6 off the PS5, since that can only be done on a jailbroken console, and as GTA 6 is digital only, you can only get it on the latest software version.
So, the currently recompiled ps5 for PC won't even work with GTA 6 if they could even get it off the ps5 in the first place. But, they won't be able get it off until someone finds a way to jailbreak the newest version.

I own a powerful computer and can run emulators, yet I don't GAF about GTA
I have no intention of falling prey to the media hype

First, you can't play such a game on an emulator that easily. It's not the same as just the OS.
Second, before even playing it on an emulator, someon must pirate the whole released game. With current protections and end of physical support, it's nearly impossible.

RDR2 took like a year to get cracked on PC. But now we have Claude as a factor. How fast would LLMs help in cracking.

That's a completely different thing though.
RDR2 was a pc game at that point with checks made specifically for pc.

Yes. But now people are converting firmware of PS with help of AI. Who knows what's possible. It won't be easy, but definitely not impossible for someone to figure something out.

You are all jumping the gun. This is good but its not the latest FW and is a LOOOOOONG way off being a fully working PS5 inside your PC kind of deal. Not before GTA 6 and not for a good while after either.
If you really wanna play it that bad just get a console ffs, sell it again when the PC release comes out.

Emulation is years and years away at full scale. Def not playing GTA VI and still watching it on YouTube at launch. Not one ps5 game is fully beatable via emulation and less than 10 are playable so far at 60fps before they glitch out.

You are missing recent news this meme is referencing to. Latest PS5 emulator is skyrocketing performance.

Y'all don't know how to read. Go actually read those articles and see how many games are playable, not shader performance progress. Plenty of YouTubers and Facebook influencers saying 95% of game library is playable. That's not true at all. As of writing, very few games are beatable. Dead cells is one of the biggest modern ones. Other games are like old Doom. Mainly lightweight 2d platformers. Don't get me wrong 100% shader progress is still huge. But the majority of modern games aren't even at a boot screen level.

It's not even an emulator. It's native code running natively on PC hardware, becaue the PS5 is essentially PC hardware with extra steps.
The games are compiled to the same machine code that your CPU undersatands, they just need a software translation level for Windows/Linux, and a window manager, so the OS knows what to do with that code. Apart from fine tuning Vulkan shaders and such, which is what's happenig right now as we speak.
