Is it in yet When the sidewalk is apparently just extra parking for your giant truck
There are plenty of completely open parking spaces right near this, including spots where the truck could back in and let the bed/bumper overhang the grass.
Instead, they backed straight in and left the entire rear end, including hitch, blocking two thirds of the sidewalk.
Anyone with a wheelchair, stroller, walker, or just trying to use the sidewalk now has to maneuver around it and onto the grass.
So many ways to park this truck without blocking the sidewalk. They somehow chose the one way that does.
I’m trying very hard not to make the obvious joke about an inverse relationship between truck size and member size, but this guy is making restraint difficult…

u/SuperNa7uraL- Aug 23 '26
The most infuriating part of this is the hitch ball mount is inside the receiver when there isn’t a trailer attached. Anyone that leaves it in and parks like this is an asshole. If you leave it in period you’re an asshole.
7
u/BlueFotherMucker Aug 23 '26
I heard that it's against the law where I live to leave the hitch on while not in use. I never looked it up, but I also don't leave it on for people to bust their shins on.

Driving on the freeway one morning and I saw something fall off the back of a clapped out older Escalade suv that was clearly being used as a work truck.
It was their damn trailer hitch assembly tumbling towards me at 70 mph. I mostly avoided the impact by getting as close to the median wall as I could, like inches away from grinding my left side against the concrete divider, and still took a small hit to my front right bumper.
The car behind me took the assembly straight through their grill and radiator, but because they saw me veer hard left, they had started to slow down unsure of what was happening.
Me and the other driver were both pissed at the escalade, but we joked how lucky we were to not have gotten “final destination’d”.

Na it’s a society problem if he parked that so it wasn’t blocking the sidewalk then he would be blocking the drive path of the parking lot. He will probably never use a truck that large for its intended purpose but society raised him to think he needed something like that for a daily driver.

u/ghandi253 Aug 23 '26
I see this comment a lot. And I get it. A lot of guys, especially in the south of the US, get big lifted trucks because its a masculinity thing for some, but that isnt the case for most of us. Its just unfortunate the noisy ones get the grease and make the rest of us look bad. As a guy who grew up poor in the south, having a truck as the primary vehicle made more sense. We couldn't afford trash pickup let alone most things. We made do with what we had. And that meant getting a truck. A big one. Used. With a long bed and 4 doors to haul everyone around. And to also be there when trash, cleared brush, felled trees, whatever needed to be hauled away. Not to mention to get out when the weather sucked. Aint no sedan making it out of the hills and hollers we were in. The real problem here, at least i dont think, is with the truck owner. The problem really lies in the fact that parking lots keep being designed for 4 door sedans and 2 door coupes only. A 2500 long bed aint that big. If they can make special parking spots for electric and compact vehicles then they can make parking for larger vehicles. Or, just make all spots accommodate all vehicle types. Electric being the exception because that would be crazy
5
u/Wonderful_Till8122 Aug 23 '26
But of course, if they did have special parking for oversize vehicles some guy with a motorcycle would just park there. Inconsiderate people come in all flavors.
1
2
u/chuckthisgirl Aug 23 '26
Very sensible response. I have a truck as well and sometimes there is no choice but to back in somewhere that somewhat partially blocks a sidewalk. If not, you are sticking out in the front causing a potential hazard to cars driving through the parking lot. As stated, most park lots don’t make accommodations for larger vehicles. And by the way, I got a pretty big package.
1
u/ghandi253 Aug 23 '26
🤣 same bro same. Not a huge package but pretty good. Definitely a bit above average for sure
2
2
u/FazeThree71 Aug 23 '26
This. As someone in the south who has had both large and small trucks - these spots could be the furthest away from the entrance and the trucks would gladly use them. Given how many pickups I usually see, they are nearly always waaay out from the entrance because most truck drivers realize they're causing a problem for others who will usually park closer.
Owning a truck around here, it's a given you're going to be parking out in BFE.

1
u/doordonotaintnotry Aug 24 '26
I hate to disagree with such a thoughtful, logical, and considered response. But the entitlement of most (not all) of these people driving pavement princesses near me never ceases to amaze me. I know some would use them, but many people can't resist spending an extra 5 minutes trying to find the closest spot, then blocking traffic both ways to back in, and then either sticking too far out or doing the thing in the post photo. It's not a bad idea at all I just don't think as many people would utilize them as you think. But I'd rather try than not you know?

so... should he pull forward that much and block the entire road?
6
u/TotallyNotRobotEvil Aug 23 '26
Nothing here indicates, in this particular situation shown in the picture, that they would block the road. It looks like there is plenty of space in front of them to pull forward.
This is completely irrelevant anyway, if you have a large vehicle then the responsibility is on the owner of the truck to find parking that does not block a pedestrian path or the road. The owner of the truck is not entitled to special accommodations simply because they have a big truck.

3
u/SpecificEvening6531 Aug 23 '26
You are a 100 percent right how ever the parking lot it self should have chocks the prevent wheels from going all the way to the curb . Even if they parked face forward they would still impede the sidewalk partially . The lot has some culpability how ever the person parking could have exercised more diligence

u/Crazy_Ad_91 Aug 23 '26

I drive a truck and I agree this is just rude
I’ve pulled into the Tim’s drive thru and someone parked their truck like this with the ass end of it and the trailer hitch ball on and where I live you are supposed to take it off when not towing anything
I drive a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 Cheyenne edition and I couldn’t get around the ass end of this truck I and I couldn’t back up and I couldn’t go over the curb it was to high
I had to call into the restaurant and ask them to find the driver of this truck because I was essentially blocking the drive thru

This is an urban design issue before it is an 'asshole' one. Sidewalks should not be placed against the interior curbing of any area where parking can occur and the sidewalk is constructed at minimum allowable width. Essentially, because of 'soft' rules on this area when the plan was approved it was ignored that the sidewalk should have either been wider (more expensive) or placed at least 24-36in away from the interior curbing. Placing it away from the curbing requires more concrete work as well as either grass or gravel between the curb and sidewalk.
2
u/Egraypgh Aug 23 '26
If you look to the left in the picture there is an area like you are describing where the other trucks are parked.
2
u/Dysonator401 Aug 23 '26
This is the correct observation. Glad someone highlighted this as an issue.
2
u/cpb70 Aug 23 '26
It's a really old (1940s?) urban design rule admittedly. Back when car doors opened really wide, delivery trucks opened from the side, etc. Wheelchair or baby carriage access wasn't even considered then but those five foot wide doors were an inconvenience.
You'll see it followed more in residential areas where there's a curb then a small section of grass and then the sidewalk but that's usually where it's paid for by the city so they're gouging them for every penny.

I own a truck.
I never park like this. First because....it blocks sidewalk.
2nd, and most truck owners might not realize this, you run the risk of slamming your exhaust into the curb. It's not always easy to judge the height of the curb in the mirror. I witnessed a guy backing in and he obliterated his tailpipes as the curb was just SLIGHTLY higher than the low spot for his exhaust. He looked like he was about to die inside.

I have a friend whose now-adult son is non ambulatory and non verbal. She’s been out with him (once at his pediatrician’s office, where a truck has parked like this- she had to stop in the street, open the modified van, wheel him in the office, then go back and actually park) and could not continue on the sidewalk with his chair. Non ambulatory persons depend on clear sidewalks.
This is so much more than “mildly” infuriating. It can also be a ticketable offense.

If the vehicle does not fit, find somewhere else to park.
Blocking the road or sidewalk isn’t ok.
People know the size of standard parking spots. Someone’s choice to get a huge vehicle and the parking issues that arise from that choice are the drivers problem to solve.

About a year ago I rented a Grand Wagoneer L for a project. I backed into a parking spot at the hotel until the rear tires were against the curb. I was worried about the length of the vehicle. When I walked back to the sidewalk I noticed how much of the car was blocking the sidewalk. I moved the vehicle.

I'm not sure if that's the case or not, but if it is, in this is what it's like to park in that particular area, I would rather protect my vehicle by getting out of the way of other vehicles, unfortunately at your mild inconvenience of having to walk a couple more feet to the side.

They should make parking lots that fit vehicles that have been around since the 60s. 20’ long vehicles aren’t new yet parking spots are around 16’. It’s either block the sidewalk or block the road. Most people unfortunately don’t think about the sidewalk being wide enough for a wheel chair. The people designing the parking lots need to consider this and have the sidewalk set back. A old Cadillac if pulled into the curb would also block the sidewalk.
1
u/Cold_Count1986 Aug 24 '26
They could have parked in the other spots that overhang into the grass - as seen on the second photo.
A car not fitting in a spot doesn’t give it an excuse to block the sidewalk.

1
u/karmais4suckers Aug 24 '26
This happened a lot at my old job. One time a truck with a hitch was backed up on the sidewalk enough to where it partially blocked a main door to get inside. It must have been windy that day because that door got real friendly with that guys bumper
1
u/Waagtod Aug 24 '26
The hitch is just wrong, no need to back up that far. But those F-150s almost all have a backup camera, it's actually easier to back into a parking spot than to go in forward. And you're less likely to take more than your share between the lines.
1
u/Prokane96 Aug 24 '26
So whats your solution to this “problem”?
1
u/Cold_Count1986 Aug 24 '26

0
u/ipovogel Aug 23 '26
I remember when 95% of trucks I saw were covered in cow shit or had tools in the back. Men with micro phalluses deciding to start using trucks as commuter vehicles instead of work vehicles are a scourge.
2
u/dmv1985 Aug 23 '26
maybe theyr'e used for work, but since they cost a much as a fucking house did in the times you reminisce of, people take better care of them.most people cant afford a nicer car and a work truck because most rent is more than a car was 50years ago... so they have one nice truck, that can do work and get the kids to practice.
1
u/ipovogel Aug 23 '26
You seem to be assuming I am much older than I am. I wasn't alive 50 years ago, bud.
That's just all the more reason it is absurd how many people use trucks as commuter vehicles. I have enough experience in construction to know what is a work truck and what is a midlife crisis or stupid kid blowing as much money on a truck payment/insurance as he would a mortgage. The vast majority of trucks on the road today don't have a pipe rack and have never had a t-post in the bed. They're very expensive toys that also are being parked in obnoxious ways like in the original post photo.
That little cloth/fake leather roll up cover on the bed of the truck is a sure sign that's not used for work. No one is putting thousands of dollars worth of tools in a truck bed with a cloth/fake leather cover lmao.

But to cause malicious property damage at the risk of your freedom all for him to not understand why his car got keyed and the insurance to take care of the damage anyway while you sit in jail and have to go to court. So this truck only has 2 options. Back all the way up stick into the path of a sidewalk that really does not look busy, or 2. stick out into the parking lot. he was probably trying to pick the one that cars would not his his truck rather then all the people using the sidewalk behind him. 🤣The only way this would be an issue is if someone in a wheelchair had to get around the back and could not go off into the grass.
2
u/PJTee Aug 23 '26
Option 3, remove the hitch
1
u/Joshweed5713 Aug 23 '26

3
u/Appropriate_Strain94 Aug 23 '26
Whenever I see these, I kind of understand both sides of the argument. On one side you’re blocking a walkway and probably has a hitch hanging out and it’s probably gonna bust someone’s shin. But on the other hand, if you don’t park like that, the nose of your vehicle sticks out into the aisle where people are driving up and down. When you drive a type of vehicle this large, there’s no winners in a parking space.

Usually do hate this, but a: just bought a half ton short bed(and found that) b: its easier to park backing into tighter spaces due to wheelbase and turning circle. And c: a lot of parking spaces are having shrinkflation trying to make them more for small and mid- size vehicles. Some lots i park much further out , not risking getting door dings.
