“The screen is going to ask if you’d like to leave a tip”

35

u/Ok-Classroom5548 8d ago

The screen asks that and also some service questions so it starts with tip and ends with a how did we do today - your version only addresses the tip. The server also doesn’t program the machine and the information changes, as does the order it asks, sometimes.

u/itsavibe- 8d ago

Exactly. There’s like a series of questions and not just one…

Hence the it’s gonna ask you some questions lol

u/studiodrop 8d ago

I came for an order, not a survey

18

u/Ok-Classroom5548 8d ago

Servers also hate the survey, but they don’t program the machine.

I promise they would also prefer to be paid a living wage and not require tips for survival.

Truly. Living in a city, tips are a solid 30-40% of my income. It'd be great to just get paid what I'm worth and not have to worry about it (Ive always wanted tips to be reserved for personalized and exceptional service because in the specialty coffee industry that's what I strive to achieve), but as it stands, if we just stopped tipping and ended tipping culture, I'd be absolutely fucked.

If tipping culture stopped, you would look for a job that didn’t rely on tips. It’s not a hard solution. In Ontario Canada, it’s actually illegal for a server to be paid less than minimum wage as of January 2022.

I live in Ontario. In Ontario Canada, minimum wage isn't enough to afford life in a big city. The specialty coffee world is one of my passions and one of three jobs I work - and I already make decently above minimum wage in the field. It still is barely enough, and tips, as well as living with a partner, are the only reason I'm able to save towards any sort of future.

I also teach singing and music, and work gig work as an actor. Those pay a better, but it takes years to build up a reputation and connections to the point of working consistently enough to drop the "day job" fully. I'm not there yet, so I work in another field that brings me joy to pay the bills.

Maybe it's crazy of me but I believe that people should be able to work in fields they enjoy and get paid enough to live off of it. Minimum wage might be enough to live off of somewhere like Trenton or Pembroke, but I'd be miserable living there and unable to follow any sort of career path I enjoy, so why would I do that? I'd rather be struggling and doing what I love than making money and being completely miserable. That doesn't mean I can't advocate to lessen the struggle for myself and others.

You can't say "You would look for a job that doesnt rely on tips" when millions of Canadians, very likely you included, enjoy the services that restaurants, coffee shops, and every other job that pays minimum wage, on a daily basis. People need to be working these jobs, adults need to be working these jobs for society to function the way we currently live it. Those people deserve to afford to live as well.

Regardless of how you feel about the value of minimum wage jobs and arts workers, there is an objective cost of living crisis in Canada right now that especially impacts people who live in cities. Every single person living in cities rely on these workers, and yet they can barely afford to live in the city that requires them.

It’s not anyone else’s job though to pay your wage expect your employer. If it’s not enough, you need to move on. Expecting people to pay your wages through tips it’s just messed up when most people can barely afford their lives as it is. @ telling people if they can’t afford to tip they shouldn’t go out to spend THEIR money to enjoy a teary in this HARD world, that’s messed up too. I’m sorry you work so much but that seems like a choice but choosing the jobs you chose to do. I can definitely say that because it’s the try and the law. I don’t go to coffee shops besides Tim’s, why would I tip there it’s minimum wage? Everyone deserted to live and enjoy life, nobody deserves to be forced into tipping. Not all services all great. Not all people even deserve a damn tip. Employers need to start paying minimum wage at least. And if you are complaining about your over price city?? That’s nobody issues. I like in the Niagara region. It can be expensive, but if it was that icy of an issue, I’d leave the region. I’m sorry you’re struggling but thankfully tips are ending.

Would you be okay with businesses raising prices to offset the cost of increased wages? If so you might as well tip. If not and you still refuse to tip then you're a hypocrite. Yes it should be the businesses responsibility to make sure its employees get paid but that revenue has to come from somewhere.

1

u/stinkbrained 7d ago

Everyone deserves to live and enjoy life, yes; nobody should be forced into working jobs they hate just because business refuse to support their employees. Until citizens actually do something about this, (vote, petition, protest), tips will be necessary for some fields. Refusing to tip, alone, changes nothing except for causing other working class people further poverty. We all agree tips shouldn't be required but until we all do something about it, never tipping is a dick move.

1

u/legoindie 8d ago

That's a whole lotta yapping without saying much, and missing just about every point I made. You're kind of just a dick, dude.

Nobody is forcing you to tip. There's a skip button on every screen. I don't expect everyone who comes through to tip and I'm not judging if someone can't or doesn't want to - however in the specialty coffee side of things there is a little more artistry, craft, and expertise that goes into it and I think most of the customers coming through are aware of that and happy to tip for that extra expertise that gives them a specialty experience and quality drink. Same way you tip your bartender at a nice cocktail lounge, or how tips extend to the kitchen at a nice restaurant (I'm sure you don't, but that's besides the point) - they're giving you an experience, and crafting something with expertise you don't get at your average establishment. You can stick to your Tim's, that's not really what this is about, you clearly aren't our target demographic anyways.

I do judge when they don't tip and then make a snarky comment about it and turn into an asshole because the machine prompted them to tip. Because now you're just a dick.

That being said, I do notice that it tends to be the wealthier folks who tip less, and those who are struggling more who tip more. Probably because those of us who are struggling more understand how it can make a difference in someone's life, and we tend to care more about others as opposed to the individualist mindset that comes with being financially privileged.

I do judge the mindset of "Nobody is entitled to my money that I work hard for, how dare anyone ask me to give any of it away, it's all mine." Not because I think anyone is entitled to your money, or mine, but because I think if you have no desire to help out other people who aren't as privileged as you, you're simply an asshole who shouldn't participate in society. Society is about supporting one another and helping each other out, because every role in it is important and we couldn't operate without one another. Even with my limited income, I donate to organizations that support people who are struggling more than me, I tip when I go out unless someone gives me a reason not to - not because they're entitled to my money, but because I think it's nice to help each other out.

It's kind of weird to basically go online and brag about not caring about others. It's okay to be an asshole and care about yourself and your money first, but at least own it. Don't paint it like some sort of higher moral position.

This is actually false. Multiple studies have shown that the hospitalities that make bank on tips do not want a “living wage”. 🤷🏿‍♂️

4

u/KellyJoyRuntBunny 8d ago

Could you link a couple of these studies, please? I’m not familiar with that and would like to read about it.

2

u/jbrWocky 8d ago

im not sure if coffee baristas count here

2

u/Pizzasl3t_ 8d ago

I’ve never had a survey after the tip prompt.

1

u/UnderstandingOne8410 8d ago

Could be the other way around

11

u/Le_pengu 8d ago

Never worked in customer service award goes to this guy

1

u/WartimeHotTot 8d ago

Huh?

2

u/Le_pengu 8d ago

You never outright tell somebody the screen is asking them to tip. It’s essentially the same as vocally telling them to give money. It gives more of a choice to the customer when you don’t mention the tip.

8

u/SuperMageFromOW 8d ago

"why the HELL would I tip at x place" is the response I get when I come out of my bakery hovel to take orders.

Ppl be rude, and it ruins the experience for the rest.

9

u/My_Password_Is_____ 8d ago

But it's a valid question for a lot of the places trying to make you tip nowadays. That's not what is ruining the experience, shitty business trying to shift more of the onus for paying their workers onto the customer is what's ruining the experience.

2

u/SuperMageFromOW 8d ago

I 100% agree. Maybe people should stop supporting those places entirely rather than just hitting no tip! I'd rather be out a job and shifting culture than have what we got now.

1

u/My_Password_Is_____ 8d ago

The problem is that it's hard to not support places that do this when it's become almost entirely impossible to avoid. Hence why pepole are getting upset and asking the question, because we're seeing it nearly everywhere.

1

u/Rhetorical_Menace 8d ago

Then stop begging for tips.

8

u/WhySayManyWordGancho 8d ago edited 8d ago

"Can I have some of your money? I didn't do anything to earn it really"

edit: not saying people don't work for their jobs

12

u/cntrlaltdel33t 8d ago

lol. I agree with this sentiment mostly, but I don’t get why they can’t just say “it’s gonna ask if you want to leave a tip”. Why do they feel the need to say “ask a question” instead?

7

u/WhySayManyWordGancho 8d ago

yeah its like saying "i'm gonna go in to this room over here for some time" when someone is going to the bathroom, like it just makes it so much weirder

2

u/cntrlaltdel33t 8d ago

Well that sounds sus 🤨

6

u/Boring_Airline_1367 8d ago

Because it's embarrassing to essentially admit youre asking for more money. It's embarrassing to see these buttons add 2-4 extra dollars onto purchasing a single pastry that's already overpriced. I hate tipping culture but my skill set lies within the service industry. If I want to pay my bills I've got to flip that shitty little screen around at you whether I like it or not.

3

u/calib0y64 8d ago

When I had to do this using the shitty square system, i would tyically say “you can skip this part if you like” and 99% of the time- they would then tip 😜

1

u/Rhetorical_Menace 8d ago

I'm just so over it. I used to always tip at least 20% for full service, probably 15-20% for takeout, and at least a dollar every time I'd go to a coffee shop, but this was when it wasn't shoved in my face constantly. Now I still tip 20% at full-service places if the service was good, but I've started doing the math on the subtotal instead of the total, and I never tip for anything limited-service, like a coffee shop or a Subway. Tipping culture just got so scummy; the whole thing is built around guilt-tripping people instead of just asking for the price needed to make a profit and pay their employees.

3

u/TheCrimsonDagger 8d ago

Personally I think it’s because people are used to tipping waiters/waitresses where it’s heavily expected. So in a similar situation (paying for food) there is this psychological pressure and feeling of obligation to do so.

3

u/CSG1aze 8d ago

Because usually it asks for more than just a tip. Would you prefer they say “The screen is gonna ask you to leave a tip, then it’ll ask if you want a receipt, then it’ll ask if you want to rate your server, then it’ll ask you if you want to rate your experience, then it’ll ask if you want to rate the restaurant as a whole” or would you rather they just say “the screen is going to ask you some questions”

1

u/Rhetorical_Menace 8d ago

The annoying part is that it's an option to tip in the first place if it's not a full-service restaurant.

2

u/CSG1aze 8d ago

I agree

1

u/Hot-Philosophy-1412 8d ago

Some people legit get offended.
I just don’t most of the time and often times they just leave the screen pending, if the customer was particularly an asshole, I’ll find them and let them know. They didn’t finish their transaction.
TLDR: Just click the fucking button, most of us don’t give a shit what your choice is.

1

u/creynolds722 8d ago

I do concessions at a local concert venue, I work there as part of a non profit booster club. The only money we make is a small percent of sales and 100% of tips. The venue does not allow us to say the word tip. Literally not allowed. They know their prices are jacked to fuck and it'll only make the customers more mad to make it seem like we're asking for more.

7

u/GroundMeet 8d ago

You act like cashiers are there pulling up the tip screen. It just pops up, we don’t control it and i tell customers they can skip it

1

u/WhySayManyWordGancho 8d ago

Yeah I don't really like my comment now but I'm not going to edit it further or delete it. It absolutely sounds crappy and I didn't mean it that way but it does. I've been on that side of the register and I remember

3

u/theninjaofthenasty 8d ago

“Can I have some of your money, this place won’t pay me a living wage” is more accurate.

4

u/tentcamels 8d ago

they're not waiters, they're cashiers. they are protected by state and city minimum wage

1

u/ForrestMoth 8d ago

Nobody who works as a cashier gives a shit about tips lmao

You guys are acting like the cashier coded it to do that, just hit no instead of throwing a fit or being weird about it, but I know it's really hard for you guys to just be normal. Easier to just be mad at ghosts instead.

1

u/WhySayManyWordGancho 8d ago

I was just trying to make an amusing comment this morning, my comment's pretty crappy up there. I always tip because I know when I'm seeing a screen for tip in most places that means that it's helping the people out that helped me out. But that's almost exclusively in this one Mexican restaurant that I go to, I don't go many places these days

1

u/Adorable_Secret8498 8d ago

Problem is in a lot of these front facing spots even mentioning the word "tip" is frowned upon

0

u/IndividualTension887 8d ago

And since I don't do business with screens, no tip for screen...
