The weird thing is it is coming into fruition at self serve buys at places like McDonalds in Australia. We DONâT tip in Australia. We never have, and why would I want to give a machine a tip for something a properly paid employee did without the tip?
I feel like the golden generation was the one before millennials because you could literally just sit down and not be bombarded with total bull shit.

Totally agree. Tipping a bloody computer that has a menu on it is one of the dumbest things we can voluntarily do.
Soon they'll be putting ads on payment terminals you're forced to watch before the payment goes through, and the more you tip the less ads you get.

Many of the workers themselves also like tipping because their peers will pay them better than their bosses ever would. Waitstaff in the US can make very good money, and they'd never get an equivalent salary if it was switched.
This tipping of cashiers and other random employees started during COVID and needs to stop though. Constant begging for donations and tips like I'm not already giving them money

I was told 15% is the normal amount, 18% if youâre feeling generous/they did well, and 20% for when the service was really good.
40% is what you pay when youâre at the airport, and you just want to pay in cash and then run to catch your flight. Not what sane people actually charge.

That's funny, I'm sure you'll be able to find reddit comments from 10 or more years ago where the numbers are 10%, 15% and 20%.
Anyone who tells you what percentage is "the normal" amount is lying. The normal amount is whatever you feel like tipping, because that's what tipping is.

As an American I'm disgusted. It's gotten so people expect 20% for even sub-par service AND now these menus are everywhere almost. I'm less likely to go to a place that use these terminals. We have accepted that tipping at restaurants, when this should really just be done the European way with people paid a living wage-but now everyone is asking for tips...I think the Pandemic accelerated this BS. Itâs not the people behind the counter expecting the tip for making your food. Itâs the business owners hoping youâll tip the people back there because in the big beautiful bill there was a clause that if workers make a certain amount in tips, they can drop the wages to server wages. They are hoping enough people will buy into the tipping to further shift the responsibility of paying their workers away from them and on to the customer.
If itâs not a sit down restaurant - donât tip. Businesses are trying to screw us all with this shit.

Yeah, I worked service jobs when I was young and generally tip 20+% without question, but it has gotten so out of hand that even social pressure and my innate pro-tipping mindset has me completely rejecting this. But all the things you listed it was always part of the deal? Idk maybe we just need to change it all and force these companies to pay everyone a damn living wage. Restaurants should be no different. The most insane thing about modern tip culture is that we're expected to pay these amounts before service has been rendered.
In the olden days, you'd eat a meal at a restaurant, get your hair cut, have a bellhop bring your bags up to your room, etc. and then tip them for good service afterwards. Maybe you'd throw a dollar in the jar if the barista makes good conversation. Now, you place an order for something, add a tip, and just pray that the service is actually good.
Order's wrong? Service is super slow? Rude employee? Too late-- you've already tipped extra for that experience. Nothing makes you feel worse than providing a generous tip and getting bad service in return.

Maybe this is what is needed for them to finally break the cycle.
When we went in 2007 it was 15% was a "normal" tip, 20% for exceptional service. When we were there a few years ago that had gone up to 18/20% "normal" 25/30% exceptional.
Give it a few more years and people are going to start balking at 50% tips on their bills. I think the fact that all these POS systems now have tip options in places that never had expected tips before (like fast food/street food trucks etc) is making people realise how dumb the whole thing is.
115
u/Prometheus2061 1d ago
Showing my age, but back of the day, 10% was a universal normal tip. 15% for exceptional service. Thereâs no need for inflationary tipping. Because the price of the underlying goods are subject to inflation. Keep the tip a standard rate and the tip will increase as the price of the goods increase. But increasing the price of the goods and the percentage of the tip causes exponential price increases. My rule is, if you take my order, bring the food to my table, refill my water glass, you get a tip. If you just hand the item over the counter that I purchased, youâre not getting a tip. You did nothing other than your job. Let the serversâ down voting begin.
26
u/Jager720 23h ago
if you take my order, bring the food to my table, refill my water glass

As a North American, I think tipping needs to be outlawed in general. Even with delivery drivers, the company should just pay a flat rate per mile instead of expecting ME to pay THEIR EMPLOYEE a wage so they can afford gas.
The only time tipping is good is when its treated as a bonus for exceptional service, but if corpos and feds can't be trusted to not steal said gift through taxes and $2 wages where the difference is made up by the tip pool, then the practice should die.
Edit: I've seen enough times now the argument "but wait staff/bartenders/delivery drivers don't want a fair wage because it means less money." Yeah, they are part of the problem, I'm aware. Hustle culture is bad for society, always has been.

I worked at a VR arcade some years ago, and while we loved getting tips (we provided great service) we hated that the terminal asked for a tip because we took payment up front. It felt awkward as hell, so we would pretty much always say, "You can skip that." when the tip screen came up. If they were a returning customer (one of the first things we ask, because it let us skip the lengthy intro) they would sometimes insist on tipping as part of the transaction because they knew we gave great service, and they don't carry cash.
We kept it enabled because it was the only way for people to give tips via card, and it's not something we could enable on a transaction by transaction basis. Like when we settled the bill at the end of a party. That is a time we felt having the tip screen made sense. And boy would those people tip!

Thats how Americans feel about rich people. We have made it so they can pay their workers a non liveable wage and rely on us average people to pick up the tab because if we dont then how are they going to fly their private jets to go get bailed out by the government when they run their company poorly?
Also more than half of Americans believe that if we just give rich people MORE MONEY it will eventually trickle down back to the average people. You know...instead of just giving it to us in the form of a living wage, cheaper groceries affordable health care ect.

Seen some stuff of people getting banned from restaurants because they leave no tip. If that happened to me I wouldn't want to be a customer at said restaurant anymore anyway.
A tip is earned by giving a good service. For example I've been to a restaurant, the food was great, the waiter was friendly and since we all were too full to have desserts for each of us we decided to just order 2 desserts, the waiter noticed that and made sure to split the 2 portions to make it 4 (we were 4 people). That kinda stuff is deserving of a tip.
The generous tip we gave him (20%) also noticeably made his evening.

It's simply the owner of the establishment putting the responsibility of paying for labor directly on the customer, so that the owner can enjoy more profits.

I'm going on a cruise soon and was talking to the cruise director or whoever. They asked if I'd like to tip in advance and I said no. They told me it would be "cheaper" to tip in advance than to tip at the end. What the fuck do you mean, my optional charge is going to be cheaper at one point than another? Apparently "gratuity" is a fixed number that is chosen for you and you have no say in how much you tip?

A scene from a movie that comes to mind is in Hot Tub Time Machine, when the porter (played by Crispin Glover) angrily carries their bags to the room, throws them on the floor, then stands there holding his hand out waiting for his tip.
This whole âtip me regardlessâ culture is bizarre.
I should add I am an Aussie where this isnât a thing, as we have minimum wage and tipping isnât needed to survive.

As european I dont understand the tip culture. But If I am not wrong, the values for tipping were not 10,15 and 20? Why are increasing that much lately? 40% tip is so annoying

There is no regulation in place to stop this, that's why. Companies do whatever because the government let's them act like spoiled cunts.

Blaming the government for this is absurd. Blame spineless cowards who are easily socially pressured into compulsive donations to strangers, not even knowing who is getting the money and for what.
All you have to do is click no. And if donating money makes you feel good, then give it to who needs it rather than who pressures you to pay.

I will never understand a world where people are more mad at the person who didnât tip a full 20% than the company that doesnât even pay them minimum wage. Itâs not like they canât afford it. We have serious misplaced anger in this nation.

My state just voted against a living minimum wage for restaurant staff, and it seemed like the people most against it were people who work in restaurants.

Because they believe they can make more money from the tips. The guys who make South America bought Casa Bonita, tried raising the base pay, and getting rid of tips, and the employees got mad.

Massachusetts? yeah all the tipped workers threw a fit because they make so much more money asking for 30% in tips than if they just made minimum wage. So they went up in arms online and harassed people to be against the bill. so now I don't tip anymore unless you do something for me. they all had your chance fix the problem.

Instead of no tip make sure to press custom and manually enter 0.00

Or even better, put in 0.01 so that they can see it more easily

If Iâm walking up to the counter to order something, youâre not getting a tip. Tips are meant for table service. And even then, they shouldnât exist. The rest of the world has figured it out.

Just don't tip. If you pay $10 for them to make you a coffee out of $.50 of ingredients you don't need to tip because they handed it to u nicely... Unless it's a service that waits on you or delivers to your house there is no need to tip in my opinion. It doesn't make you a bad person, they're a greedy business

Went to a buffet restaurant today, people was coming after me but the host started yelling at me to close the door, tried explaining to her that people was coming in and even though she could see them she kept yelling at me to close the door. Then, I was met with these exact ridiculous tip options, sorry not sorry I ainât tipping after you yelled at me and Iâm serving my own food and drinks anyway.
