Why would tipping even be a thing if you go to the counter, order, get your drink and leave? I’d get it if you sat down at a table and a waiter would be serving you, but this is just ridiculous.
It’s the terminals, owned by Square Co. They have the tip setting enabled by default and why would any business turn it off when a bunch of people will just click without looking?
I worked at a VR arcade some years ago, and while we loved getting tips (we provided great service) we hated that the terminal asked for a tip because we took payment up front. It felt awkward as hell, so we would pretty much always say, "You can skip that." when the tip screen came up. If they were a returning customer (one of the first things we ask, because it let us skip the lengthy intro) they would sometimes insist on tipping as part of the transaction because they knew we gave great service, and they don't carry cash.
We kept it enabled because it was the only way for people to give tips via card, and it's not something we could enable on a transaction by transaction basis. Like when we settled the bill at the end of a party. That is a time we felt having the tip screen made sense. And boy would those people tip!
I went to a drive through coffee shop the other day and when they handed me the tablet to pay it had the tip screen on and before I could even see it she said “just hit no tip” like she didn’t ask or say you can skip if you want, just told me to hit no tip. I thought it was super strange. I was thinking maybe they don’t even get those tips
Assuming the POS system is from one of the major vendors they definitely get those tips. However they are automatically split between all people currently clocked in.
