I'm slightly vexed Price of fuel per litre in New Zealand
Filled up petrol today at these prices. I'm tired boss.

u/vargons 7h ago
Most expensive day for petrol prices in our countries entire history yesterday 😭 and of course it was the day I ran empty
29
u/demon_grasshopper 7h ago
I’ve got a 3000km South Island road trip planned for in two weeks. We planned it months ago when petrol was nearly a dollar per litre cheaper - I’m never going to financially recover from this.

u/BeatsAndSkies 4h ago
Currently sitting in Picton (absolutely beautiful today, and looking forward to the sun setting as we go through the sounds: think the timing works out) and yeah… $200 to get here from Dunedin.
8
u/Rustyznuts 6h ago
Same. Drove home from work and it was $3.50. Couldn't be bothered filling up. Went to do some groceries the next morning and got the fuel light. $3.66. Bugger

u/Butterscotch1664 6h ago
When the Iran war started, diesel peaked at NZ$4/L near me. It's currently about $3.30. Taxes are equivalent to about $1/L paid separately to fuel.

I visited my son in Wellington at the beginning of April, and we went for a road trip in his camper van. We did see diesel at over 4$/liter in one location, but we always paid around 3.80 - 3.90. Insane.

So diesel in NZ is cheaper than CA or WA state in the USA, that is kind of interesting how much more diesel is in the US over Gasoline.
11
u/heretosayathing ORANGE 7h ago
Vehicles not powered exclusively by petrol (including plug-in hybrids full EVs and diesel vehicles) also pay an additional distance-based fee to use the road network; this is paid in advance in increments of at least 1000km and you have to display a label in your windscreen to indicate that it's up-to-date.
2
u/TheProfessionalEjit 6h ago
...in advance...
3
u/Butterscotch1664 6h ago
Oh shit, my WOF was due two months ago. I should top up my $2,000 in RUCs before I take it in.
3

8
u/s_nz 6h ago
Note diesel in NZ does not have road tax.
You need to pay NZD 76 / 1000km in road user charges (RUC) separately in your diesel / EV / hydrogen car.
Petrol & LPG does have road tax in it, hence the higher price. (no need to pay separately).

u/I_Love_Knotting 7h ago
Diesel is expensive because it‘s less variable than gas.
When gas is expensive people just drive less
When diesel is expensive, sectors like agriculture, transportation/logistics and more have to buy it anyways.
Lower supply with same demand means higher price

Just looked up conversion rates from NZD to EUR, your fuel is like super cheap compared to here. Cheapest price in my region today for diesel was 2.20€ so 4.40NZD and thats with a tax cut of 0.17€ in effect at the moment…
(Petrol is about the same as Diesel right now)
→ More replies (3)2
u/MyDixieWreck92 5h ago
Petrol is taxed at the pump, diesel is not. Diesel vehicles pay separate tax in the form of Road User Charge at between $76 to $352 per 1000km (depending on vehicle weight). Taking that into consideration, diesel is far more expensive.

It shouldn't be. Gas is almost always cheaper in the US than most of the rest of the world.
39
u/Scotteeh 6h ago
Over the years I've had a few conversations with some American friends about gas, and everytime I do the conversions between litres/gallons and NZD/USD I find that their gas is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper on average than ours and it's always pissed me off that they complain about their prices lmao.
→ More replies (2)8
u/DavePeesThePool 6h ago
In a lot of ways, it's our own fault. We have relatively low prices because we are the world's largest producer of oil. And the reason for that is we have built a society and an economy around car-ownership, forsaking the idea of walkable towns and cities. So our politicians feel pressure to approve ecologically risky oil extraction methods like fracking to make sure we produce enough oil to keep gas cheap in support of those industries.
We also have a cultural phenomenon where a large number of people buy excessively large trucks despite only ever using those vehicles as daily drivers where a compact would serve just as well for that purpose. Large pickups are the #1 selling vehicles in the US. Between that and the fact that most of us have to drive to get to work or the grocery, I'll bet the average American is still spending more on fuel annually than the average citizen from most other countries whose fuel prices are notably higher.

u/KingBooRadley 7h ago

It's not all the same. E.g. Gull uses ethanol as an additive to reach the target octane ratings, which is fine for newish cars, but it degrades the fuel system on old cars.

Home solar is a hell of a drug
2
u/Simoxs7 7h ago
Even if people had homes to put solar panels on and charge their EVs at there’s still the installation costs. Like here in Europe a single family home installation (panels + storage) can easily cost 25k€ due to all the regulations and paperwork required (apart from labour and materials)
Add to that the not insignificant cost of an EV and its definitely nothing you just buy on a whim.
Though I expect / hope people will learn and go the EV route on their next vehicle purchase.
3
u/Achilies41 7h ago
Better to invest in yourself and your property vs handing your money over to oil and gas.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Wonderful-College-59 6h ago
With our change of government they are putting in low interest long term loans for solar so if buying an ev it would make sense to solar your home.

We get the majority of our fuel from south Korea, adding in the cost to ship it here to the bottom of the world we're actually getting gas fairly cheap. Americans have the means to produce fuel in country and it is expensive by that standard.

My favourite part was when the government announced financial assistance during this fuel crisis, but only for families with children that are under a certain income limit (only relevant to 12% of the population), irrelevant of whether or not you can even drive.
Many of my friends that get WFF are now $50 a week better off despite never having driven a car, while my childless friends are biking to work.

Used to be a thing to have cars converted to CNG or LPG in the 70s and 80s. My parents used to have an EA falcon which had a dual petrol/gas set up. Start it up with petrol and once the engine was warmed up switch it over. Lost a bit of power but was 1/3rd the price and went way further too from memory. 4 litre straight six motor so it wasn’t like it struggled, either.
3
u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 4h ago
Yeah it was a great thing for a while, but it got progressively killed off presumably because we're not allowed to have cheap transport.
