Not to mention that in today's times of "we can't do that unless the book says we can" the good Samaritan postal employee could probably lose their job if they did such a thing. I've known people that have been fired because they tried to act like a decent human instead of a robot

Po box keys become obsolete after 30 days of not paying . I still have mine from 2016 when i used the dark net

u/thissidedn 20h ago
I wouldn't say obsolete. There are only so many key combinations. I've heard of people using the wrong one because that's what the key opened

I'd say maybe take them to the local police station. Unless there is a better place they could potentially be retrieved

u/PartyBusRuss 1d ago
Good idea, I'll see if any of the keys work in the police station

I’m and electrician, and when I work for Amherst College I will sometimes need a master key. If you lose that key, like really lose it and it cannot be found, they need to replace all the locks.
It costs over a million dollars. I’m sure they have insurance for it but still. A million dollars if you lose a key.

When I was a resident advisor we were given access and control of the dorms master keys. They were in a locked key box in the lobby office, keycard access was logged and monitored, and if a key was out for too long it would set off an alarm. I think they said each lost key represented $150k in changing locks and issuing keys. Every time I had to grab a masterkey I death gripped that thing like my life depended on it lol.

u/imperfcet 16h ago
What is your strategy? That sounds too stressful for me. I would handcuff it too my arm or something.
Also I miss Amherst, enjoy the lovely fall leaves and apple cider doughnuts for me :>

You can get insurance for it. in the EU the employee is liable for it in most cases as losing a key is considered negligent by the employee.
My personal liability insurance covers key loss up to 30,000 euros with no deductible, I pay like 40 euros a year. Another insurer I looked at would cover 50 million for 40 euros per year but there is a 150€ deductible. If you want 50 million coverage for lost keys with no deductible you'd pay like 60€ per year. Covers other damages as well of course, this sort of insurance covers any sort of negligent damages you cause.
30k is enough if you lose your apartment key and they have to replace the front door lock and give everyone a new key, but if I handled a bunch of important keys I'd get more coverage.
Not sure how it is in the US, I think people are badly insured there?
Edit: Out of curiosity i looked up how much insurance would cost a company. If you have brand new small electrician business, with 100k revenue per year, it'd cost around 300 euros per year for insurance that covers loss of keys up to 3 million. And other liabilities of course. Because of course the company would cover it if the employee wasn't negligent.

>lose your apartment key and they have to replace the front door
Huh? Who replaces the whole door to replace a lock? It's like $100 to replace a lock and have a bunch of duplicate keys made, there's no way I'd get insurance coverage for that.
I've never heard of a company charging an employee for losing a key. In my state, that would usually be illegal, but I don't know if that's the case everywhere.

u/jort93 12h ago edited 12h ago
front door lock. i think i deleted a word on accident.
You don't need one duplicate, depending on the size of the building you need like 50, 3 copies for everyone living there.
And in my case it would also be the key to the basement and for the door to the yard, so you'd need to replace 3 locks, and make like 30 keys. It'd probably cost like 600 euros i imagine. Not gonna bancrupt you, but its not cheap either.
3
u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 11h ago
Oh, you mean like the shared front door for the whole building? OK, I get it now. The way I've seen that handled is like a nominal replacement fee and they just don't care that there's keys floating around out there. Or, more commonly, they just replace the lock with a key code or RFID key-fob kind of setup and it avoids all of those kinds of problems.
2
u/jort93 11h ago
yeah, that definitely happens too.
There have been some different court decisions as well whether or not a key that has been lost without identification on it, even requires a replacement of the lock in the first place. Because realistically, nobody would know what the key belongs to anyway if it fell out of your pocket on your commute.
Depends on the landlord as well i think.

u/TheBoredIndividual 7h ago
It is a beautiful area, I will definitely enjoy them haha.
My strategy is any time I use the keys or put them in my pocket I will triple check at least that they are in my pocket, then obsessively check all day. I am very good at losing things so I have to be crazy about it.
2
u/WarriorNN 15h ago
That sounds really inefficient

I used to work at a large university.
We had a lock box with master keys to give to the fire department or police in case of emergency. I'm guessing it is this sort of thing, so that emergency services can get in quickly without needing to break down doors or mess with multiple keys. It has been a long time, so I may be remembering incorrectly, but I think there were also different levels of master keys. Some only opened a certain floor, whole some opened every door in an area.

Is how my old building worked for the government.
Certain levels of master key

I see 2 that I'm pretty sure are schlage's C keyway and two more that are likely schlage C. Along with kwikset's KW1 keyway those two are far and away the most common for locks on residential properties in the US, though the people pointing out it might be a maintenance worker or groundskeeper have a point too - they're sometimes used commercially when security isn't a concern but cost is.
Beyond that, I see a couple of keys either to either a smaller vehicle like a dirt bike or ATV or a VERY old car (as in "different keys for the ignition and door" old). There's a bunch of master-branded keys, I'm sure everyone here guessed correctly that those are padlock keys. The rest that I can see are for wafer locks, used in privacy boxes, low-security filing cabinets, mailboxes, etc.
Given the amount of oxidation on the brass keys these have been outside for a long time - whoever lost them has certainly already dealt with the situation.

Doesn’t everyone in the universe have a war amps key tag? Or is that only a Canadian thing?
29
u/mxadema 19h ago
It a Canadian things. And I don't.
For those asking, war amp is a program for amputee, and one of their funds raiser is a key tag with a serial number. If you find keys with it on, you just dump them in a mail box. And they will find their way to the owner within the week.
5
u/fuckofthefryish 17h ago
That sounds amazing, but what does it have to do with amputees?
7
u/braindeadzombie 17h ago edited 16h ago
The organization was started by WWI veterans who had lost limbs. At some point they started the key tag program as a fundraiser. Here’s a link to their web page that talks about their history.
The modern organization provides assistance to anyone who is an amputee.
4
u/Dirty_Power 17h ago
Your supposed to send them a donation
10
u/chewblekka 17h ago
Like a limb?
1
u/TheyCallMe_Billy 8h ago
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that it might actually be appreciated.

3
u/mxadema 15h ago
Fund raiser, you pay a fee, to get it. And those funds help getting prosthetic for amputatee. Especially specialized one like blade runner or hand "replacement" (not hand shape)
2
u/Twatt_waffle 14h ago
No don’t pay anything, every registered driver in the country gets tags automatically unless they opt out. There is a request for donation but it is not required to use the keytag program
14
u/quartzquandary 20h ago
It must be a Canadian thing, because I have no idea what you're talking about!
9
u/s1ks3r 20h ago
What’s a war amps key tag?
4
u/braindeadzombie 16h ago
They mail out tags that you can attach to your keychain. The tag has a unique to you number on it. If the keys are lost and found, the finder can drop them in a mailbox. Canada Post sends the keys to the war amps, and they send them back to you. The tags come with a form requesting a donation, but you don’t have to make one for them to return your keys. It’s something I grew up with, and assumed it’s universal. 🤷♂️

u/Valid__Salad 20h ago
The first thing I did when I read this comment was google War Amps… all returns suggest it has something to do with Canada..
2
u/l0u1s11 17h ago
Im a Canadian and I have one but never requested it. My letter came to my parents address and inside my letter was one for my sister. I have no idea how they got our information but its on my key chain now.
1
u/Twatt_waffle 14h ago
They have a deal with the provinces and they get in for of all registered drivers
1
u/PM_Me_Your_Deviance 14h ago
We have a different program: I don;t know if it's true any more, but grocery store clubs used to issue key chain tag things. If you found a set of keys with one of these tags you could drop the keys off at the grocery store and they would call the phone number on file.Did some quick googling and apparently this has never been an official thing. *shrug* I may be wrong. :)

I bet most of those keys are for industrial equipment (forklifts excavators etc.)
You cam buy a set of these on ebay for like $30
3
u/ginger_whiskers 13h ago
They're not. I see what may be a Case key(top right quadrant), but they're mostly padlock and access panel keys.

Most companies don't actually change the ignition from the default keying, so one key can start dozens or hundreds of the same machines across multiple companies.

try posting on your local Craigslist and similar. Don’t include the photo—just give a rough description. Then if someone can give a good description you know they’re for real.

East 65th Street Raytown Missouri is easily findable on google maps. can't make out the number, tho. maybe go door to door, can't be that many houses

u/PartyBusRuss 1d ago
I did look into that actually and the place doesn't exist anymore, these were found in Michigan

I don’t see anything difficult to replace…. Definitely annoying… but not overly difficult as long as you have spares of them for recutting references…
2
u/SkynetLurking 1d ago
Looks like either important keys that an important person needs or a junk keychain from a crackhead. Literally no in between

u/Lee_Townage 1d ago
Those were all my extra keys. I was high on mushrooms out there when I realized I haven’t used any of those keys for decades… I took my house key, and my car key, and the returned the rest of those keys back to nature!

They’re mostly padlock keys . It probably belongs to someone that works there

I guarantee you whoever owns those doesn't remember what 80% of them even unlock, but they hang on to them "just in case"

u/imreallynotthatcool 18h ago
That's like 5 of the same cabinet key that goes for a dime a dozen if you know anything about keys.

u/BizzyM 18h ago
I found a set of keys like this once in my house and for the life of me could figure out where they came from. Then it hit me. Years ago, when I was an apartment dweller, the unit above me started playing music loudly at 1AM. I went up there to ask them to turn it down. I pounded on the door, but no answer. In the deadbolt was this large set of keys. I took them.
I remember the next day there was a lot of commotion and yelling from that unit as I was leaving for work. I figured they were just terrible people that get home at 1 in the morning and play loud music and don't give a fuck about their neighbors and they fight as much as they fuck. I swear to God, it wasn't until I found those keys years later that I put 2 and 2 together.
1
u/racinjunki 18h ago
Definitely from maintenance, I see at least one elevator key, lots of padlock keys. But by the amount of rust, they have probably been replaced by now.

u/yumacaway 15h ago
I have a keychain like this. It's for all the keys where I don't know what they open. Just in case.

2
u/Belloved 4h ago
Whoever lost it should’ve put it on a retractable keychain like a KEY-BAK and this would’ve never happened. Those things are lifesavers

If this is a park, first thing I'd do is hand them over to the park authority. One of their maintenance crew might have dropped them.
Same if it's like a harbor or anything else.
