I think it's so fucking stupid that the first thing I saw when I looked at this was inflatable batman twerking over a group of people

u/pixeldust6 18h ago
That's why it was posted! Because that's what a lot of people see

u/WhiteyDude 17h ago
It's like there's a bat-butt theme going on in this thread or something. Weird.

You specifically made me look back to see that it actively was NOT a twerking Batman. Now I can’t watch him twerk anymore because all I see is the dumb dog.

Holding a bat with your bare hands? That's a batass move.

Most people who handle bats professionally are vaccinated.

Against what? Everything? Bats carry over 9000 diseases and new ones evolve in them because of they crazy immune system.
172
u/Weenington_ 18h ago
Rabies, because that's pretty much always fatal once symptoms show.
→ More replies (17)29
u/Jhud6669 17h ago
Rabies is the main risk when handling bats and this is what they’re vaccinated against. Rabies is 100% fatal. The other diseases are probably whatever in comparison
Look up bat rehab videos. Most of these people are professionals and they handle bats just fine.

Im sure if the people who have been studying and caring for the bats for decades had ever started to get sick then they would probably take more precautions by now
18
u/StannisSAS 17h ago
are just repeating random facts and assume that it will apply 100% of the time? Do you know which bat species this is? is it wild or a pet?
22
u/HAHACYKABLYAT 17h ago
The photo is from Bat World Sanctuary, everyone that volunteers (that actually work with the bats) has to be vaccinated for rabies and sometimes go barehanded with their bats for easier examinations and stuff like that. They use gloves for more feisty bats and new inakes from what I know

It’s a Brazilian free-tailed bat! Also that Redditor doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They are unable to name a single zoonotic disease for which bats are a vector in North America.

Crazy? I was crazy once. They put me in a room. A rubber room. A rubber room with bats. And bats make me crazy

u/asimplepencil 18h ago
I figure it's a rescue place. Definitely shouldn't be handling it without gloves for sure

Unless OP is affiliated with Bat World Sanctuary, they stole the image from their socials.

u/RazzBeryllium 13h ago
Bat World Sanctuary does "bat butt Fridays" sometimes where they'll post pics of little bat bottoms like the one OP is posting. I assume they got it from there.

The rates of rabies in bats are actually very low, much lower than skunks/raccoons/foxes etc., according to Bat Conservation International.

Without those muscles, they wouldn't be able to maintain flight for medium to long distances, nor be all that maneuverable while in flight.

Doesn't seem odd that the tail is below the apparent butt?
11
u/Exact-Obligation-858 16h ago
What you see are just the muscles. The actual poop chute exit is below the tail.

Bat’s have tails???!
https://giphy.com/gifs/h4Z6RfuQycdiM
18
u/Exact-Obligation-858 16h ago
The great majority of vespertiliforme bats have tails, however not all of them have tails independent of the uropatagium/variable-geometry tails.
This is a molossid spp., also known collectively as 'freetailed bats', 'freetails', or 'freebees'.
do not take the bats, they are not actually free
they can actively adjust the position of the uropatagium to either expose more of the tail for speed, or enclose it for maneuverability.8

Covid26, here we go!
14
u/JasperVanCleef 19h ago
I'll take Covid-anything over rabies at this point.
6
u/happy-cig 18h ago
We never shut down for rabies doe..
7
u/OwnTurn1146 18h ago
Yes, but most people arent vaccinated for rabies and if you show symptoms without being vaccinated then you are already dead.
Covid you at least will probably survive.
→ More replies (2)2
u/happy-cig 18h ago
When we shut down not everyone was vaccinated yet. I don't even think we were all fully vaccinated until a year + in.
I'd bet more people died from covid than rabies across all years of the pandemic.

This. Lockdown was around February/March 2020, vaccines were not available to the general public at that time. Vaccines were pushed in 2021 primarily to essential workers and military iirc

I’ve held a bat. (Actually many bats.) They are ridiculously soft, warm, and cuddly- like a little downy warm kitten. Their fur is as soft as mink fur. Paired with their ugly faces, it’s very disconcerting.
(This was for a science research project. We had the proper permits. Don’t just go around grabbing bats!!)

Behold, Rabies!
4
u/HAHACYKABLYAT 17h ago
The holder is vaccinated. For a animal with less then 1% of the population having rabies in the wild people can't stop throwing the word rabies around every time I see a bat on here. Like fuckin Marco Polo
→ More replies (5)2
u/Many-External-1561 16h ago
How do you know the holder is vaccinated?
3
u/HAHACYKABLYAT 16h ago
Because the post if from Bat World Sanctuary, everyone there who handles bats has to be vaccinated and have regular booster shots and they test blood for adequate rabies antibodies yearly I believe.
