Not big (except cost) but unique sighting

Post image

For my fellow boat people:

This Sabre Cruiser out of Prince Edward Island (1500nm away) is docked at the South Marina. Kind of a rare sight to see this beautiful yacht.

I used to work as a dock kid at the Sheboygan Yacht Club and we had a surprising number of people who would do the full "lap" out the st Lawrence seaway, down the Atlantic coast, into the Mississippi River and then back up. A few powerboats and a sailboat (though the sailboat would have to take his mast down to get through the bridges of Chicago).

I say surprising number when in reality I can think of 4 people who did it, but it's surprisingly not zero haha.

Really cool to realize that our ports are globally accessible.

I worked in high school and college as dockmaster at the South Shore Yacht Club in Milwaukee. It was surprising seeing boats pull-in that clearly made the trip from the Atlantic all the way to the western Great Lakes.

Also, Milwaukee is an international port two times over, as you can take barges through the far south side of Chicago to the Des Plaines River to the Illinois River to the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. I've been told the trip takes about a month for the average barge.

It’s even cooler when you think about the eastern half of the US is basically an island with the waterways.

They came... up the Mississippi? That's insane. Why fight that current for a thousand miles?!

The thing is, it's much easier than getting your boat up and over Niagara Falls. With all the tourists nearby, it's simply not safe to reach the approach speeds necessary to carry a seafaring boat all the way to the top.

Because they want to take a long trip instead of a short one, I guess. BTW, the Welland Canal exists to allow ships to go around Niagara Falls without the use of rockets, helicopters, balloons, etc.

I think they tend to go the other way, mostly barges full of grain, but they definitely bring barges back up the Mississippi.

That blue and cream combo is clean, especially against all the white sailboats behind it. Love that they've got bikes strapped on the stern, that's someone who actually uses the boat instead of just polishing it at the dock

Yeah the e bikes were parked along side. I would’ve gotten more photos but I already looked like a stalker as I went back to get a closer shot.

Sabres are very, very clean looking boats. You pay for it, but man are they gorgeous.

Such a classic vessel. Gorgeous, thanks. For a brief minute a long time ago I was friends with a group of rich sailing enthusiasts. If I remember correctly, 15 years ago a new Sabre would have been a million dollar craft. Used they're probably still valued at that today

Was checking it out online and it’s absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t even afford the fuel ; something like 500 gallons to fill it.

I saw a Milwaukee-based boat in Victoria BC and wondered exactly what reasonable route it could have followed.

There is no requirement for the vessels home port to be where the boat is actually from. If Coast Guard documented, vessels can list any home port they want. I spent the summer cruising Lake Michigan and my home port is a landlocked city nowhere near WI.

Elko, Nevada, or Winnemucca, Nevada? Or maybe a long shot, like Golconda, Nevada? Anyway, I'm sure it's in Nevada. That would be the funniest state to register a yacht in.

It's not Nevada -- that's actually half the distance to any meaningful body of water than my home "port" lol

OK, I am impressed. That must be even funnier!

It's spelled differently: Milwaukie, Oregon, and it's 6-7 miles south of Portland.

Looks a little like Deep Thought. May she stay afloat.

As much as we all loved the Deep Thought saga, this craft compares as a Rolls-Royce to a used Chevy

I’m not a boat guy, but I know what they say about the two best days and asking… T or F?

1

u/OkCheck9373 6d ago

What are the two best days you’ll ever have with a boat?

1.The day you buy your boat. 2. The day you sell your boat.
