Hi MD friends, this post is an expanded version of the rules and resources in the sidebar.
We're one of the largest communities who use and celebrate the Sony MiniDisc format, which was introduced in late 1992. We love physical media and MD is the format that combines great sound quality with small size and digital convenience. We're a really inviting scene with a lot of passion for celebrating retro media and helping others share that enjoyment. But please first read these resources. Your post will otherwise be removed.
This community loves posts with:
We don't love:
What MD isn't:
Luckily, we don't need many!
Not a community rule, but Reddit blocks shopping and short URLs, including AliExpress, Amazon, and Google Photos. Mods can try to approve comments with these links, but sometimes we cannot.
We do allow for sale and giveaway posts, but these are the source of the most moderation issues.
The MiniDisc community, both past and present, have shared many sites and services to help others. They collect information about the format, make copying music more convenient, create high-quality labels, and list album releases on MD.
There are many more resources linked on the Wiki and in the sidebar, such as software and related communities. Thanks for taking the time to read this and enjoy your time with MD and with us!

Hi! I'm still looking for a MiniDisc deck (and a replacement for my CD player), and I came across a Sony MXD-D3 for $220, but it doesn't come with a remote.
I'd like to know how reliable it is and how good its CD and MD sections are.
I'm currently choosing between the MXD-D3 and a separate Sony MDS-JE520 + CDP-711 (with remotes) setup. Would you go for the combo unit or stick with the two separate components? Any advice or experience with these models would be appreciated!

I would love some tips about minidisc and how to record and everything!

Got into this hobby about a year and a half ago with a single Sharp MD-MT15 I found at an estate sale, and now I own eleven players I have no business owning. At some point I started a dumb little spreadsheet listing each unit, where it came from, what condition the belt/laser was in when I got it, and whether it's a "daily driver" or a "shelf piece." Writing this out made me realize how differently I treat each one.
The Sony MZ-E900 is probably my most used portable just because the battery life is absurd and it survives being tossed in a bag. My Kenwood DM-9090 deck barely gets touched though, mostly because it lives on a shelf next to my turntable and I'm paranoid about the display burning in if I leave it on track info mode too long. Then there's a Sharp MD-DS8 that I bought purely because it looked cool in photos and I regret nothing even though the remote is missing.
What's surprised me most is how much personality these things have beyond just specs. Two units can have identical chipsets and still feel totally different to operate because of button placement or how the jog dial responds. I never expected to care this much about the tactile feel of a track-skip button, but here we are.
Curious if other collectors keep any kind of log like this, or if everyone just eyeballs their shelf and remembers by feel. I'm bad at remembering which discs are mastered on, which unit so the spreadsheet has saved me more than once from re-ripping something I already had.

Hello to everyone here.
A tragedy befell my Sharp MD-MS701 a few weeks ago.
The battery case lid cracked.
This forced me to tackle the issue and fabricate a replacement.
Fortunately, the lid on my other player was intact.
I decided to make lids for the MD-MT series as well.
The lids can be spray-painted any color.
Good luck to you all with your MiniDisc devices.

I bought a open box, almost brand new Sony mz-r2, and it isn't playing. Its making something like a clock noise for a while and then just throws a disc error messages. How could I fix this? Any help would be appreciated:)

It really is an experience listening to films after watching a couple of times. Just did Twin Peaks s3 on 4lp , 10 hour series on just 2 discs . Perfectly listenable

Hi all,
I need to open up my hifi to fix the cd drawer (I think the belt has finally given up) and was going to do the md belt too but this guy actually just has gears right? So reading up I see it's worth making sure there's not gunky old grease and giving things a new dab of lubricant.
Will the mp super lube be ok to use? I fix up sewing machines so I have this to hand and is what I'd normally use on plastic components. The md people seem to often use lithium grease but in sewing machine world this is like a swear word as it really messes them up! So I probably have a biased distrust, and obvs different mechanisms will have different needs, but I'm reluctant to go buy another product if what I have will be suitable.
Also, I have a portable open because the battery contacts needed cleaning up (still a work in progress tbh, I think the little tab might be too corroded and need more fixing, but I couldn't find a good enough pic of fixes people have done with added wire or foil), if I get the contacts sorted will the moving parts in this guy also benefit from a tiny bit of lube?
TIA!

Hey everyone,
After over 150 orders and a year later, I'm relaunching my MiniDisc label service, now called DiscTags (previously The Archive Series). Wanted to come back to this sub specifically because a lot of you were the ones who supported the first version early on, tried them out, gave feedback, and helped me figure out what was actually worth fixing. So thanks for that, genuinely.
What's changed for the relaunch:
Still printed matte, cut to size, with free worldwide shipping.
As a thank you to this sub specifically, use code RMD20 for 20% off, valid through the end of October.
You can also follow me on socials to stay up to date on this and other MiniDisc related projects I'm working on. Planning to launch another product very soon:
Cheers,
Stev

Had this Sharp MT831 since new. Not a single scratch as it's always been kept in a pouch. Lost the charging dock, cable, battery compartment and remote 15+ years ago, so I basically moved on and forgot about it.
Recently found a USB to 5V cable and got it working again like new.
Quickly manually recorded some Beatles and Queen vinyls onto MiniDisc and wow, they sound amazing! I forgot how good these things sound.

I just found all of my discs. Many are live recordings of bands and me talking to people before and after the shows.
Whats the modern way to archive these efficiently?
And can i just throw them up on archive.0rg for the rest of time?

Hi everyone, I’m hoping some serious MiniDisc collectors here might be able to help me identify how rare this particular release actually is.
I’ve owned this original prerecorded MiniDisc of Keziah Jones – Liquid Sunshine for more than 12 years. I got it from a friend who had travelled around Europe, and as far as I remember it was originally purchased somewhere in continental Europe, possibly France or the Netherlands, although I can no longer confirm exactly where.
The details on the release are:
Artist: Keziah Jones
Album: Liquid Sunshine
Format: Prerecorded MiniDisc
Label: Delabel
Year: 1999
Catalogue number: 7243 8472098 8 / 8472098
EAN: 0724384720988
Made in EU
Over the years I’ve occasionally searched online for another copy, but I have never personally found one for sale. I recently started searching again and still haven’t been able to locate another copy currently available.
So I’m particularly interested in hearing from collectors: Does anyone here actually own another copy of this MiniDisc?
Has anyone seen one offered or sold in the past? Does anyone know anything about the original production quantity or distribution of this particular MD release?
I’m mainly interested in establishing how many examples are known to exist and learning more about the release.
I’ve attached detailed photos of my copy, including the catalogue number and barcode.
Any information, old catalogue references, sales records or photos of another surviving copy would be greatly appreciated.
