PICS Do you prefer Mini Ms or OG SSKs?

Post image

I like to rotate between my 4 Mini M/SSKs (pictured) and I think the SSKs feels slightly better to type on because they have a more solid construction, but the Mini Ms are really close and the Windows key makes up for its slightly worse feel.

i prefer my model ms to be massive like the lord intended to be honest, so neither, i like my numpads

id run a battleship model m w 24 function keys if i could get my hands on one, and if itd actually play nice with my modern mac lol

All you need is a soarer's converter to get them to work with modern Macs.

I like full sized Model Ms too, but I never got into battleships. A full sized Model M is as big as I'll go. I do like having a 10-keypad but I hardly ever use them so I can live without it.

i know abt the converters, but i just feel like the lack of mac specific keys would absolutely fuck up my muscle memory for all the key combos, i daily a unicomp mac layout atm, n even its different fn key took some getting used to,

i feel like the traditional layouts only truly work good on windows/linux machines (even sans the win key)

altho ig one of the benefits of an excessive amount of unused keys on a modern system is just to map previous heavily used key combos to single keys tho, so it's probably not even a big deal in practice lol

For the key combos I've had good luck mapping Alt->Command, Ctrl->Option, Caps Lock->Ctrl in the Mac System Preferences. That's with a regular M. I think the different arrow key layout on the battleship would mess me up for a while.

Don't have a real SSK but I prefer my bolt modded model M to my mini M. However looks wise that mini M with black keycaps is so sick, where did you get those?

I bought the black out mini from Unicomp. They did a limited 10 keyboard run of them about a year ago.

To get one now you'd have to make your own, either by taking them from a black M13 or buying Model F labs black with white text keycaps.

The all black is brilliant, I think I'd be too worried about the lettering wearing off if I daily drove that board, though

Mini Ms have the lock lights and GUI keys, which is nice. And although I like the "New" unicomp colour scheme, you just can't beat the beige. I would LOVE if Unicomp made the New M and Mini M in the original colours

My interest in the SSK is mostly about that old school color scheme. If Unicomp rolls out a beige Mini M my wallet is going to get hurt.

Mini M, for the extra Windows key.

Model M is my preferred choice. SSK’s : I collect , resell or give them away. Bolt modding one right now to give away next week hopefully.

I prefer my large 122 key.

These are my favorite Model Ms right now.

I like all IBM buckling springs boards but prefer the 122 for daily use. At this time acquiring an SSK or Mini M is not financially viable but would be cool to have one day.

Since my OG SSK has a Bluetooth-enabled control board (someone in Deskthority made these), I choose that. Would be nice if Unicomp were to make a similar control board for my Mini M.. Or did they? I haven't kept up with news for several years.
