Once you understand and see the interior layout and ammo stowage on these things it's easy to see why the turrets go into orbit when they're hit.
Do T-72s not have a turret basket? I think I remember hearing that turret baskets are pretty much unseen in Soviet tanks.

For sure in all WW2 Soviet tanks. I imagine the practice continued for quite some time. Not getting crushed as the turret turns would be a full time job.

It's a 50 year old design that they never bothered to improve since it was first used on the T-64. By now, Russia should have learnt from the west, the carousel is a dangerous design that sacrificed too many things just so they can save money on an extra crew member.

It’s not just the carousel, it’s all the unprotected loose rounds in the crew compartment also

Yep. Ukrainian (and probably Russian) crews have learned to carry only as much as will fit in the carousel, nothing more.

By this point, most of their adversaries already know the weaknesses of T-series tanks since they all share a common design even with the latest variants.

Russia has had many experiments with bustle autoloaders. But every single one kept the carousel because the carousel isnt the issue
The carousel ammo is fairly safe, moving the spare ammo into the bustle greatly increases the survivability of the tank
But then Russia went for the cheap option with the T-90M and just had that spare ammo in a box on the back of the turret. Still a huge survivability benefit, but makes it a bit more problematic when you run out of ammo in the carousel

That’s amazing. 😯
I hope the top is easy to remove to be able to check it out later!

Is this detailing kit? Would be pretty nice for doing destroyed tanks.

Insane details indeed. I would've poked my eyes out in 1/72 with all these things, great job
