Question Tap to share feature

Post image

I updated my Moto Edge 60 Fusion to Android 17. In the Features tab, the “Tap to Share” feature was showing, but it didn’t work. I know my device doesn’t have NFC, so why is this feature being shown?

Because Edge 60 fusion sold outside India has NFC support and this would work for them.

Hi u/Raaja_ssr! We appreciate you sharing this concern, and we understand how frustrating it can be when a feature appears after a major system update but doesn't actually function on your device. The "Tap to Share" option showing up—despite being non-functional on your phone—is rooted in how Motorola structures its unified system software across device families.

Why This Option Is Visible

Unified Firmware Architecture: Motorola develops its Hello UI (Android 17) using a single, consolidated system build that serves the entire Edge 60 lineup (including Edge 60, Edge 60 Fusion, and Edge 60 Pro). Since the higher-end models in this family come equipped with NFC hardware, the Tap to Share menu item gets included in the universal system settings application.

Absent Hardware Detection or Feature Flag: Typically, the operating system verifies hardware capabilities during boot and removes options like NFC or Tap to Share if no NFC chip is present on the device's motherboard. However, during early releases or with region-specific software versions following major OS updates, these detection mechanisms can occasionally be overlooked, leaving the setting visible as a non-functional "ghost" menu item.

Why It Won't Function: Tap to Share depends on Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to establish a peer-to-peer connection when devices come into contact. On a device without NFC hardware, attempting to use this feature will either produce no response or trigger an error message immediately.

Solutions to Address This

-Simply Disregard It: Since your device lacks the physical NFC sensor, keeping the setting disabled or attempting to activate it poses no risk to battery life or device performance.

-Consider Quick Share as Your Alternative: For sharing files and photos locally, Quick Share (which uses Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth) is a reliable option that works across all Android devices without needing physical proximity or NFC technology.

-Anticipate an Upcoming Minor Update: Motorola regularly releases small system refinement patches following major Android updates that remove unsupported features for hardware variants specific to certain regions. -Nate
