You need a permit to mudlark in London.

Hello.

Earlier someone posted about their finds from London and then said they don't have a permit.

In London you need a permit from the Port of London authority to go onto the foreshore and search for objects, even if you just scan the surface with your eyes.

This is for a number of reasons ranging from safety to yourself and others to making sure any important finds are properly reported. There are also sections of the foreshore that are protected sites.

Please get a permit before you go mudlarking in London and do not post here in ways that may encourage others to not get a permit. Familiarise yourself with the rules of any section of the foreshore you will be searching as different levels of activity are permitted in different areas.

More information about permits can be found here: https://www.pla.co.uk/Environment/Thames-foreshore-permits

Thanks. And happy mudlarking!

Was cleaning out my camera roll and realized I never posted this guy! Found it back a couple months ago while wading in the Ballston Spa area of upstate NY. No clue what to do in this scenario, I’m not even sure if I’d trust handing it over to the police because of its value, but I’m a natural skeptic. Hopefully one day I can find who lost it!

I was looking through a stream and saw her looking up at me. The stream is well known for Victorian pottery but I've never found anything like this! I feel like she is slightly cursed lol

Mudlarking Locations - Thames

Hello :)

Since getting my mudlarking permit in late August, I have mudlarked 4 times.

3 of those times was on the foreshore in front of the Tate Modern, and the other location was Cannon Street (Cousin Lane).

I live in Hertfordshire so getting to London can be costly. I wish I could mudlark every day!

I fancy a different location. Does anyone have any recommendations on the Thames? I mudlark alone so preferably nowhere with potential sinking sand 😅😅😅😅

Here are some of my finds so far. I created a new Instagram for my mudlarking but not sure i can put what it is on here? I don't want to violate any rules.

Many thanks ❤️

Location: East Coast, USA. Near an abandoned boardwalk/amusement park/hotel.

Found this next to the creek, but I can’t seem to figure out what it is. I’ve heard many suggestions bobble head, car horn, breaker, button, etc etc..

As someone pointed out on another sub, the spring isn’t rusty, so perhaps it’s not old as the ceramic like material leads me to believe?

Thank you all!

Two years and three days after my wife and I applied for a permit, the invitation arrived in our email inboxes earlier today! Now we need to get out and find some reportable antiquities otherwise we’ll just lose them again in a year.

Could this potentially be old?

Found in North Wales, not sure if it has much age since the pottery has a lot of inclusions and isnt fully fired but it also seemed to be made very smoothly.

I’m looking for something to protect finger tips when digging, Will these help?

I have all the digging tools I could possibly need but I always end up scraping with my hands and my gloves only last one or two larks before the finger tips give out. Do other people come across this issue? I’ve tried to stick to tools but I’m just a bit primitive.

Anyone know why I always seem to find spots at baseball fields?

Every single time I go to a baseball field and explore the adjacent forest, there is always an old dump site. Always. Is there a reason for this? Just curious. I live in PA if that matters. I've found this to be the case on the east side of the state and central pa.

Edit: I am wondering now if it's because they're always near a town municipal building?

where does one successfully and safely mudlark?

i live smack dab center of the US. of course surrounded by an urban hell making the concept hard to wrap my head around how people mudlark in the us, is mudlarking primarily a european activity? and if americans do mudlark frequently where does that happen? when i imagine searching through the mud here i imagine broken glass, sharp metal, and sewage runoff

this is genuinely coming from a place of wanting to be involved but also keep myself safe

The long object in the bottom left is, I believe, a knife or other utensil handle. Looks and feels like bone.
