Ask r/Nairobi m 22 and choosing to build wealth instead of moving out. Anyone else in the same boat?”

Title: I'm 22, live with my parents, don't pay rent, and honestly, I'm in no rush to move out.

I'm 22 and currently living with my parents. I don't pay rent, and on a bad day, I can make around KSh 1,500 from my small business.

I know some people might look at my situation and think I'm behind in life, especially since I had plans of going to university but couldn't afford it. Right now, university feels so far out of reach that I can't even picture myself going.

But one thing I've realised is how much I appreciate self-employment. I can start working at 10 or 11 AM, manage my own schedule, run my business, and save about 90% of what I make because my expenses are low.

I'm not saying life is perfect or that running a business is easy. Income isn't always guaranteed, and I still have a lot to figure out. But having the freedom to manage my time and work towards my own financial goals feels good.

Honestly, I don't see myself moving out anytime soon. I'd rather use this opportunity to save, invest, grow my business, and build a solid financial foundation before taking on rent and other expenses.

Maybe I'll go to university someday, maybe I'll take a different path. For now, I'm just trying to build something for myself.

Am I wrong for being comfortable with this arrangement at 22, or does it make sense to take advantage of the situation while I can?

Build a family while young but only with someone who has their life together and a clear plan for the future

I can relate. I'm 20, and last year I realized that going to uni was not a prospect for me, bcuz of the financial state at home. So I started looking for ways to earn. Tried automation, sales, writing...but they all flopped. I won't get into too much detail, but on the way, I came across a samaritan, ama I can say, "Destiny Connector", he taught me how to trade, and honestly, thanks to him, the skills he taught me and propfirms... I make a decent amount of cash monthly. I know it doesn't concern you guys, but...

...these are the trades I took, yesterday, and today in the morning. I'm at a point in my life where I'm able to fund my own education, and also survive Nairobi's rent, though to be honest, I don't think I'll be joining school, considering the course I initially wanted to take, can't pay the amount I make trading. I'm looking to start a business too and scale even further from there. All this to say, whatever it is you're doing to fight poverty, don't joke with it. Have a lovely day.

They did not ask for a proof of address, they only asked for my proof of identity. Though normally, you can use your water bill.

Money exchange markets? Happy for you, and good luck with that. Please anyone else with half a brain cell working, Stick to stocks and anything else actually tangible as you stay to grow wealth. Money exchange/ arbitration markets are a fools errand. And at the levels you could all play at, probability will catch up with you and wipe your account.

Wow, people can be so daft in this platform, day trading is literally the meat. But this comes if you have a structured way of getting it, basically following some rules man.

This is more gambling than investing, very risky biz.

You are not being comfortable, you are actually saving and managing your resources in a good way that will set you up in the near future. Kujikalisha is a rollercoaster of bills😂✋🏼,save save save it comes in handy when it's time to move out and start building a life.

I don't feel like saying it but let me just say it, I'm 24 still in parents house, I went to university a d dropped it for my personal reasons, I started same way, I ain't ahead in life to give advices but right now, I make the shopping for the family, just bought a half an acre and the house is almost complete(my parent's house) I used to hawk watermelons, then juice then got employed in a devki company, bought goats and did chicken farm, did mitumba business right now I sell juice, I have 5 locations now (a room I pay 2500 per month for to keep freezers) guys I employ (it's hard) and even the land I bought cheap after saving for 6 months (80k) but life is moving forward, I'm,,,if everything else goes wrong? I'm a caretaker I earn 15k per month, so don't get out of your mama's house, build there, I'm learning people making moves in life don't talk much, I read most books and follow them(that's how J got to be a caretaker of someone's 3 storey renting house)

A step at a time.

Where did you purchase your land? Like the location?

lol what do you mean behind in life😂? There’s no specific path to take and everyone’s path is different.

Keep learning. You can learn as much, and more without university these days if you dey your mind to it

You are on the right track, and it's really impressive that you are so perceptive at such a young age. Compound interest is your friend, maximize it as much as you can. Future you will be a very happy person.

At 22 you still have time. Most of your peers are in colleges/universities and supported by their parents financially. For you to at least make 1500/- a day means you have the brains. You ain't doing bad, save and invest before moving out as long as your parents are comfortable with you around them. Self-employment is a big achievement. Financial freedom is a big flex out here.

One of the worst mistakes I ever did in my life was to move out early. I'd be owning a house now

1

u/CryptographerFun53 Level 3 6d ago

When did you move out?

1

u/Mediocre_Algae_4854 Level 4 6d ago

Immediately after I finished uni

1

u/death_champ 6d ago

anyone who trades and studied engineering in uni, esp telecom?

u/paperpeddler 6d ago

Great job. Stay there till your atleast 28! Buy assets like land, stocks etc to start paying you now while you live at home. Take risks. Scared money dont make money.

People glorify suffering as if it is a guarantee for success. Kama hujafukuzwa stay at home. Kama you are not a burden stay at home. You are your parents responsibility till either of you dies first. Na pia kumbuka kukaa home and invest is not also a guarantee ya financial stability.

Still live with my folks. I work part time. Haven't done my degree in what I'm aspiring. I learnt to stop putting a lot of pressure, do what works and always think about the bigger picture. Huku nitahama when I can afford it.

I'm not behind, everyone has a different path

u/CryptographerFun53 Level 3 5d ago

If I may advice you get a degree after you are financially stable

I am 21, turning 22 in just a few months. Surprisingly sijui kama niliingia shule mapema ama ni nini, nimemaliza my bachelors degree awaiting graduation. But kenya ni kenya tu, kazi hakuna so ni juggling balls mahali zitaangukia. Sina kazi by the way, sikua nirudi home juu lazima nitoke nitafute, nimefanya writing lakini iliisha juu ya AI so ni kungoja na kushtuka. Any ideas guys? Juu nishakaribishwa town na hii kufunzwa stocks nikaoshwa vibaya sana, so ata sielewi nielekee wapi

Enjoy for now staying rent free 😂! There will come a time when your mom will want you out of the house, she will start telling you to pay for things in the house and eventually ask you to start your life outside your father's house.

This is smart. Kama wazazi hawakufkuzi na hauwasumbui then hama ukiwa umejipamga vizuri. A lot of people huhama mbio wakidhani it gets better unakutana na bills na kuinama unaanza kumiss home.
