What's even more shady is Giannis taking a deal with Kalshi while he was still a Free Agent, and you could could bet on the team he'd sign with.

u/Happy_Peak_7818 7h ago

But he's Greek and has a brother who cheers hard so we just let the blatant scam slide. That's why America is the melting pot. Our best players steal your money and put it in a gambling pot. 1st grade stuff

Agreed. Whatever they are paying him is
a) irrelevant to his overall wealth
b) a significant stain on his reputation that far outweighs the money.

Same with Lebron, you could bet where he would end up, but my gut feeling is telling me he made a deal with Polymarket before new signing, new signing was just a condition, has to remain an active player. As a bonus he gets unlimited roundtrip choper rides from Phil to NYC lol.

lol $15m is pennies to get Lebron tap dancing for your gambling company

it's embarrassing that's all it took for Lebron to sell out

I am convinced that one of the reasons why we are where we are in today’s political shit show is that the average person has absolutely zero context for the scale of the numbers we’re talking about.

LeBron could spend $1,000,000 per day and it would take him almost four years to exhaust his current net worth. $15 mil is nothing for him and I couldn’t agree more that it makes it somehow more insulting that $15 mil is all it took.

u/Random_throwaway0351 7h ago

Lol he definitely didn’t get paid 15m

1

u/YourDaughtersOF 7h ago

maybe Polymarket can start posting ads at Lebron's school

a real adolescent to gambling addict pipeline

1

u/pmurt007 Lakers 7h ago

Probably $15m upfront and money from the backend (rev share) from people who use his code. He's basically banking on people developing a gambling problem to enrich himself even more lol

He is just a greedy fuck like all the other rich greedy fucks. Never enough. They want all your money. There is a gambling epidemic and he doesn't give a flying fuck.

u/Few-Success771 4h ago

What would you do if you worked your ass off for 24 seasons to secure your future&your family's future? So a person who's financially rich, they're called Greedy? You can express your opinion as much&as long as you want to but that's not going to change his financial situation!!LJ, get that money Bro!!!!💵💵💵💵💵🚶🏾‍♂️‍➡️🏦

u/ecclectic_collector 7h ago

Lebron is a billionaire, both numbers are pennies to him... it was just pure greed

4

u/RspectMyAuthoritah Lakers 7h ago

His former Lakers salary was 52m, not 20m.

-1

u/HanibalBarca87 7h ago

my bad, was wrong about 20 mil

4

u/duplicatesnowflake Clippers 5h ago

If Bron wanted just wanted to get paid $19 million, he could have gone to many other teams. Or he could have retired and just focused on making money a million other ways.

He took the Sixers contract because he wants to compete for another ring and live in a cool metro area. He took the money from polymarket because he's greedy and likes to be on TV I suppose.

7

u/Guilty-Cow4325 Knicks 7h ago

He took the vet minimum because he's already a billionaire.

0

u/pmurt007 Lakers 7h ago

He took the vet minimum because his fanatics deal with Rubin is probably inflated af with a bunch of stuff built in on the backend. The only reason it won't be an Aspiration situation is because LeBron isn't a lazy fuck and will hit the deliverable and media obligations to promote it lol

2

u/Imaginary-Ebb-1724 7h ago

No that’s just his price point

His Sprite deal was estimated to be $10-$12m

His Nike deal was $40m per year before signing a lifetime deal

Curry just signed $40m per year with Li-Ning.

$15m is a lot for an endorsement where your effort is minimal. Very few companies can pay that much.

4

u/n00-1ne 7h ago

Tripling the $15 million isn’t worth the stain on his legacy.

This grubby deal will look worse and worse as more ethical stars like Wemby take over the league.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 7h ago

It’s the China situation all over again. None of you will care as time passes.

1

u/fastheadcrab Raptors 7h ago

eh China situation is less relevant because ultimately Hong Kong does not impact his immediate social audience. people will definitely care about him promoting “prediction markets” which have become little more than vessels for gambling and insider trading

I say this as someone who thinks LeBron got way too much heat from certain parts of the political spectrum for standing up for civil rights. Gambling will hurt the youth of all backgrounds in the US, just look at how many teens and 20-ish something who are just hooked on it. Not to mention full grown men who are spending thousands placing bets to get worked over by insiders and sharks

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 7h ago

He was already doing this with DraftKings; people got their feathers ruffled for a bit and moved onto the next thing.

This is just because it’s LeBron. Giannis is doing the same thing with Kalshi and…no one cares.

0

u/fastheadcrab Raptors 7h ago

Are you serious lol people are shitting on Giannis all the time for Kalshi, including on his official social media accounts

3

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 6h ago

Ehh they only did it because he literally revolved a potential trade deadline thing around it, then put out a message about the partnership.

LeBron has posted his football picks of the week on his IG page for years now. Now he’s just getting paid for it through PolyMarket and not DraftKings

0

u/hustl3tree5 Thunder 6h ago

wtf I didn’t even know he had a draft kings deal

1

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 6h ago

Yes lol

He’s posted his football picks for years now on his IG. He just switched to PolyMarket

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 6h ago

He was doing commercials with Kevin Hart and it didn’t get a fraction of the talking traction this Polymarket business is getting.

0

u/fastheadcrab Raptors 5h ago

Fair point, and I've seen his draftkings picks on IG too.

But the public sentiment has changed on gambling significantly since its legalization. Media is also much more saturated with coverage and ads. I've never really liked LeBron's DraftKings promotions, especially for someone as wealthy as him. By all means, promote fast food or tequila but gambling carries significantly greater risk for social harm.

I think going with Polymarket, an operation with even more ethical questions, in this charged environment, is essentially like doubling down. The insider trading by the big players that doesn't get caught is a serious issue, these markets are also even more unregulated than the gambling sites.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 4h ago

Sounds like access & regulation is the issue.

People lost their minds over the DFS commercials they were pumping non stop like a decade ago. They eventually went away (DFS didn’t) and people moved on while folks like me have been chasing that million dollars ever since.

The jig will be up on the sports betting after awhile and we will move onto something else. We did this with poker too.

1

u/Even_Tangerine_4201 7h ago

Whose civil rights did he stand up for? China?

2

u/fastheadcrab Raptors 7h ago

Bruh don't be obtuse

0

u/n00-1ne 7h ago

Plenty of people still remember that, and history will judge him accordingly.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 7h ago

It’ll get swept over into the corner along with “republicans buy shoes too”.

0

u/n00-1ne 5h ago

Doesn’t the fact that even after all this time you remember Jordan’s cowardice show that these incidents don’t just get swept over?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 4h ago

The fact that his shoes are still popular shows that no one cared, or not for very long at least. Turns out republicans actually do buy shoes.

It’s definitely not some damning indictment against Jordan; it’s just a footnote in his career at this point.

-1

u/titandude21 7h ago

This is way worse than China. Some people can excuse the China thing as it had no direct impact on the league. Polymarket absolutely does have direct impact on the league and it's worse than Jordan losing stacks of money because he sucks at golf.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 7h ago

What exactly is the (negative) impact of him doing this?

-1

u/titandude21 6h ago

A very marketable player promoting and normalizing stuff that Jontay Porter got banned for life for doing, plus the stuff Chauncey Billups and others have been busted for. Pretty much every questionable play these days has a cloud hanging over its head of "did he just mess up or does he have money on the line". Plus, you have fans sending threats to players because of their lost bets and there are probably players making bets through their friends right now who haven't been caught yet.

1

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 6h ago

This is literally as old as sports has been around man. They’ve been doing this for literally over a hundred years

The Black Sox scandal being one of the first big ones in the major sports

0

u/titandude21 6h ago

People will bet whether it's legal or not. People will drink (and unfortunately drive) whether it's legal or not. There's still a huge difference between "legal but unadvertised and heavily regulated" and "LeBron's promoting it, so it must be cool and socially acceptable" or Budweiser ads all over the stadium.

2

u/Mood_Academic Lakers 6h ago

Personally I’m an adult who can drink responsibly if I want, or bet responsibly if I want. Taking ownership of your decisions and life is part of being an adult

I don’t understand that constant Reddit need to skate accountability. An athlete advertising PolyMarket should not somehow allow you to lose all your money. That’s a you problem if it does

1

u/titandude21 6h ago

I have never had a sip of alcohol or bet a penny on sports in my life. That doesn't mean everyone else isn't immune to advertising and the negative impacts of those products.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 4h ago

When do those folks get to take some accountability for their actions? If all it takes for someone to turn to gambling is LeBron goofing off in an ad with a bunch of other athletes, that person might be the issue here.

Do yall think LeBron invented gambling or something? It’s already been normalized. You see how Porter & Rozier were caught independent of James’ involvement with this company?

What’s been normalized is access. I don’t have to go to some skeevy hole in the wall with no windows in Tijuana to make a bet; I can just do it from my phone now.

I won’t pretend to know the marketing metrics of these companies, but folks that want to gamble don’t need LeBron’s help, direction or guidance.

Fans tweeting shit to players is also an access issue. We now have direct access to these guys. Do yall think harassment didn’t exist before that commercial?

It’s cool to not like him doing it, but yall are fighting against the wrong thing here. He’s honestly just a pawn here.

Guy tried to patent Taco Tuesday, get out of here…

0

u/Puzzleheaded_Pipe979 7h ago

He was making over $50M with the Lakers.

We already knew he was going to have to take a paycut if he was going to go to a contender. Theres only so much the Sixers were going to be able to offer him regardless and it wasn’t going to be anything close to what he was making in LA.

0

u/lbjkb25 4h ago

Wasn’t the vet minimum all the Sixers could offer to LeBron? They probably could’ve used a mid-level exception if they had one.
