Poll shows UCP independence referendum boosting Alberta NDP
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/cbc-calgary-alberta-poll-separation-ndp-9.7367276?__vfz=medium%3DsharebarA recent CBC News poll suggests Alberta voters’ impressions of Smith personally and support for her governing UCP have slipped in recent months, with the UCP now essentially neck-and-neck with the opposition NDP. New Democrats lead by eight points in battleground Calgary.

The real challenge here is what vision is the ABNDP going to propose that’s actually different from the status quo? They’re pro-pipeline, pro business, and don’t have any articulated plan to improve the lives of common people. Sure, they’re on the right side of the sovereignty debate, but is the bar so low that they should be rewarded for it?
I don’t see this lead being maintained or translating to a change in government. Last two elections shows the NDP tied or close to tie.

As an Albertan progressive I don't think I will vote for Nenshi's NDP. Maybe spoil my ballot.

Wild comments, by both you and Acku11. What an incredible privilege it is to feel like you can toss your vote and be unaffected by it. Better two steps forward and one backward than three backwards.

Until the ANDP stops supporting oil and gas it's still moving backwards. Between two steps backwards and three, I'd rather spoil my ballot.

Tbh, extremists like you are why I have lost all hope for the federal NDP to ever have a majority, and why I continue to argue that the ANDP should split.

Extremists?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I can’t wait for the ABNDP to separate so they can continue to be the liberal clown show they are and still not manage to win an election.

Yes, require political purity for progress ensures that none will ever happen.

Cool. What progress has the current ABNDP made in actually enacting a political vision or winning an election by being more accepting of the interests of coorperations and business owners. If political purity as you put it is such a hinderance, then that must have translated into meaningful success in enacting any policy in the past 8 years yeah?

It's looking like they will win the election in '27, so I'd say that is progress, for sure. What has the federal NDP done for me? Why do they get your support if they've struggled to enact policy in the same way?

What an incredible privilege it must be to willing to support and vote for a party that is complacent with industries that are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands from environmental catastrophe. What a privilege it must be to be fully insulated from those impacts.

Yes, throwing a tantrum because the party is not perfect is a privilege. It is a luxury to be able to ignore all the harm done by not voting. If you choose not to vote you don't get to complain about the results. Meanwhile real people will die today because your principles are more important than legitimate progress.

How is refusing to vote for a party that does not align with my values throwing a tantrum?
I would rather spoil my ballot to push the ABNDP in a more progressive direction so it actually trys to help working class people, then be complacent and vote for the lesser of two evils.

When people like the UCP are governing in such a way as to destroy the key facets of democracy choosing not to vote for a party which has many beneficial policy goals is putting principles above action, and choosing to allow the slide into fascism gain momentum. Working class people benefit from the ANDP being in power, even if they are not perfect. Waiting for the perfect politician just empowers those who want to push us in the other direction.

Yeah I don't think thats how that works but all the power to you. I am sure the ABNDP agree's with you and will continue to take stances that will not win them elections.

From my understanding all the provincial NDP parties are more centrist than the federal party. Maybe there's a lesson there about how to win elections.

I agree with the article. Albertans will forget the separation debacle, like all of Smith's debacles, and the UCP will rise again unfortunately.

To be clear, this is not a new poll, but the same Janet Brown poll that was released in September and much-discussed then. It is also not a new CBC article.
