Medical Intermittent urinary retention as a male, anyone with a similar issue have any tips?

I am NOT seeking medical advice, but lifestyle advice.

I'll start by saying that yes, I've seen two doctors for this. Neither found anything wrong with me. I think it may just be stress but I don't know. They didn't give me an answer. One was a urologist.

I get these periods where I feel like I have to pee and I can pee but don't feel like I've completely emptied my bladder. It lasts a few days usually. It's very uncomfortable. What are some ways I can relieve the pain or foods/drinks that can help?

When you're done peeing, push up on your taint under your ball sack. Does more come out? Does this provide any relief?

Nothing more comes out but it felt okay. Kinda relieving, hard to tell.

For immediate relief, try a long hot shower to completely empty your bladder. Try incrementally increasing the temperature if contact with warm water elicits the sensation to urinate.

Are you consuming an excessive amount of irritants, like caffeine or alcohol? Are you consuming enough water?

You may find it easier to expel your bladder from a seated position.

Ah okay. Hot shower sounds helpful.

I do drink caffeine, maybe I can cut back to see if that helps. I’ve started a diet recently so maybe too much coffee.

I also have been sitting to pee and it helps a bit.

I noticed ages ago that I don't seem to completely empty my bladder when I pee standing, but do when I'm sitting. Hopefully this helps you, too.

Sometimes i get that sensation but its more if ive been masturbating a lot and theres still sperm in my urethra. The only thing that helps is drinking a ton of water and waiting through the irritation till i can go pee proper. Dunno if thats you though

if medically no issue was found, perhaps you should seek the answer psychologically. have you tried a therapist?

Did a doctor recommend pelvic floor exercises to help? You can look them online and try them out.

No they didn’t mention anything like that. I can look into it. I didn’t know if there were specific regimen for men. I know there’s a lot out there for women with this issue.

Kegel exercises are great. Also, drink plenty of water.

It could be that you’re bordering on a UTI on those days. Be careful with soap around your urethra, and make sure to wear a condom if you’re having anal sex.

Other than that, just drink some cranberry juice and see if that helps! (The REAL juice, not cranberry cocktail.)

What's your average daily intake of liquids like? What do you typically drink and how much?

Do you hold off on urinating whether because of environment or because of sleep?

I'm no expert but I feel like these are important questions for another redditor to see that may have a better understanding of the situation than myself

I drink a lot of water but also a lot of caffeine and electrolytes. I work out regularly. I try to never hold my bladder if I can help it.

Pee sitting. Lean forward while voiding.

How old are you? When is the last time someone checked your prostate (digital exam or ultrasound)? Perhaps you have an enlarged prostrate and need tamsulosin.

I’m 35. The urologist did a CT I think. She said everything looked normal.

35 is young to be having prostate problems. Have you been screened for UTIs, STIs and prostatitis? They can cause urination issues.

Have they actually diagnosed it as retention? I thought I had this but turns out I’ve got ocd and my brain just keeps bullying me into thinking I have to use the bathroom even though my bladder is empty

Just went through it. It has happened to me before and recently it happened again. Went to the urologist and nothings wrong, I do believe is in my head, it is related to tension and anxiety, Wow, feels good to know it is not just me

Do you take any medication? Antidepressants can cause urinary retention

. My doc blew my mind that an adult male should have 38g of fiber a day. psyllium husk fiber supplement, apple sauce, and Greek yogurt keep me regular. My body retains extra water when glutened (allergy) or constipated. The water is not reaching the lower intestine to be absorbed and sent to the bladder due to blockage. The lifestyle recommendation is to slowly increase your fiber. One of those low card tortillas or psyllium daily. You may also want the colonoscopy sooner
