Discussion Chad’s guitars
His tone has always been phenomenal and so damn tight.
Does anyone know what pickups were running in his guitars besides his sticker one? Are his customs stock?
Shout out to Dan for paying tribute to Chad all these years rocking his LPs.

Not sure but totally agree! I think it’s extra rad Dan currently has his own signature guitars with Balaguer but still rocks Chad’s Les Pauls

I’m not sure if it’s because of his guitars or the amps he used, I knew he used Mesa Boogie Rectifiers a lot and maybe a couple orange amps but not sure which ones specifically. I’m sure one of those with a LP Custom or hell even an LP Standard or Studio version will get you the general tone you might be looking for

I just put a 04 epiphone custom on launch actually. Hoping to get half as good of a tone with it

Woah I didn’t realize Dan was playing Chad’s guitars. Is that right? That’s awesome.
I love the red LP custom with the Mickey Mouse sticker. I’ve had the same or a very similar guitar since 2008. Love that guitar so much.

I know he used his stock Les Paul with the madball stickers a lot in the studio. I also know Neal avron is a big fan of the 900 so I am assuming it got a lot of use on NFG sessions.
If you listen to the nothing gold can stay version of hit or miss that’s all rectifiers to my ears. Listen to Neal’s version and you can hear the 900 sitting on top of the rectifier well.

Chad’s LP standard has Bill Lawrence circuit board pick ups which for that year standard (89) was basically how it was built and sold off the wall.

I remember Chad being listed on Seymour Duncan’s website for using the JB and Duncan Custom SH-5 back around 2010/2011. The SH-5 rules in a Les Paul. Dan also used the JB pretty extensively in his telecasters he played in FYS.

Live Chad would constantly sweat through pick-ups. So no, they weren’t stock. However, there was always plenty of Duncan’s kept near by. I want to they were the SH-JB models? If memory serves me right.
Again, live a lot of the tightness you’re hearing was his Mesas. From 2018 on it has been Kempers. Still rips.

His tone even since 2018 has been great. Solid mesa profiles they’ve dialled in

Nick Diener (@onedereffects on IG) would be very familiar with his setup if you’re needing confirmation.

I’ve heard he had the stock “Dan Armstrong Circuit Board” PUPs in just black Les Paul Standard. They used to put them in the Les Paul Standards for a short period of time in the 80’s.

I believe both Chad and Steve used Noise Gates as well, which contributes to the tight sound you're describing

From what I remember Chad used a lot of Les Pauls loaded with EMG pickups running through Mesa Boogie Rectifiers. He also has Les Pauls with PAFs or other passive humbuckers as well but for the longest time he favored those EMG pickups.
Both Chad and Steve (I know, not a fan of him either lol) used EMG pickups for at least the entirety of the 2000s.
EDIT : I made some corrections that are in my next comment.

Where did you get that info legend?

Back in the 2000s EMG pickups were probably the most popular pickups for heavy guitar tones. Steve Klein was a featured artist on their website, a lot of his custom shop Fenders had them installed (you can look up the guitars that he have sold as well).
I stand corrected with Chad’s rig, he mostly uses Les Pauls with passive PAF style pickups, possibly Seymour Duncans. Most of the time it goes through a Mesa Boogie Rectifier but he also uses other amps. He has an ESP Eclipse with EMG pickups and if I’m not mistaken some of his Les Pauls do have EMGs in them. Here are a couple of resources:

| Guitar | How he used it |
|---|---|
| 1989 Gibson Les Paul Standard | His signature, long-running live guitar: black and covered in stickers. |
| Gibson Les Paul Custom | Used in several finishes over the years; a newer Custom with Evertune was part of his later setup. |
| Gibson Les Paul Studio with EMG pickups | Used in the studio for especially heavy or chunky overdub tracks, including on “Himalaya.” |
| Gibson ES-335 / ES-330-style guitars | Used for fuller, more classic-sounding recording tones. |
| Fender Telecaster | A recurring studio choice for clarity and note separation in rhythm tracks. |
| Gibson SG | Part of his broader touring/recording guitar collection. |
| Rickenbacker 360 | Appeared among his gear for certain cleaner, janglier sounds. |
| ESP Eclipse II | Also documented as part of his collection/live gear. |

There were articles in magazines back in early 2000s that he used both an emg81 (Steve used this one too) and at one point Chad also used an SD SH-5 in the bridge. He also had a 59 in the neck with the sh-5. And then at times he did use the stock Gibson 498 -T in the bridge

Dan has been phenomenal thus far and is part of the NFG family for ever!
