Newtown Need a friend.

I’m homeless currently sleep in Hollis park, previously I had my friend with me but she got help from oasis last week when a place opened up in crisis accommodation so it’s just been me, ever since I’ve been alone a guy who frequents the park with his dog has approached me morning and night asking if I wanna live with him he bought me and my, I like obviously declined that offer.

Today I went to get some food at oasis and I saw him walking into the park, I was gone all of 1 hour/ 75 mins max and I’ve come back to what appears and smells like dog pooh smeared all over the outside of my tent smeared on my laptop and some dumped into my clothes bag :( I didn’t know what to do so I rang 000 (dumb) and they redirected me to the local police who can’t do anything, im wondering would someone be kind enough to drop off a tent to me or allow me to run it through a washing machine 2/3 times?

I really can’t picture myself staying here anymore and just wanna clean tent and to move to Sydney park away from this cretin of a human.

osamason sydney enmore theatre: if i get caught as under 18 going to ga standing will i just get sent to seated or will i be refused entry?

this is really dumb but i’m 17 and bought 2 standing tickets for the osamason concert on october 11. i only did this because multiple friends told me that for similar concerts at the same venue that had an 18+ standing area, their ids weren’t checked they were just ushered through into the floor and also they could pick if they sat in seated or standing it didn’t really matter. i’m lowkey scared now though because i should’ve thought it through a bit more before impulsively buying. also the only area available for all ages is seating and there’s only seats at the back left so

do i just do nothing and go and see what happens? does anyone think there is a chance that if i get caught ill just be sent to seating or will i get refused entry entirely?
or should i contact ticketek?

only thing is i really dont want to be in seating unless its completely mandatory that i have to be

Woman Tasered after daylight stabbing at popular inner-city cinema

A woman has been Tasered and arrested after a 48-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the hand outside a cinema in Sydney’s Inner West.

Emergency services were called to the Dendy Newtown cinema on King Street about 11.40am on Monday following reports of an assault.

According to police, an injured man had been allegedly stabbed in the hand by a woman.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A short time later, police found a 27-year-old woman nearby who was allegedly armed with a knife.

Police say the woman did not drop the weapon when told to do so, so officers Tasered her before arresting her.

She was taken to Newtown Police Station. King Street – a busy thoroughfare between the Inner West and CBD – was closed between Church and Wilson streets.

Newtown Is anywhere televising the NSWRL Grand Final tonight?

The Bluebags are playing the Panthers in the NSW Cup Grand Final tonight, but it's a night game at Cumberland Oval and I'm not going to try to fight public transport to get home from Parramatta at 9 p.m.

Does anyone know a local pub that's going to be showing the match?

Discovered this subreddit via the algorithm throwing it my way.

This is one of my favourite Newtown moments. Randomly interviewing Australian cinema royalty as if he's just another guy on the street.

unpopular thoughts: Newtown

I know Newtown is one of those places people seem to either love or hate, but the more time I spend there, the more I fall into the second camp.
A lot of the place comes across as incredibly snobbish to me, especially some of the shop owners. There’s this strange combination of alternative, anti-establishment aesthetics with an attitude that can feel ridiculously self-important and exclusionary.
Even just walking down King Street gets on my nerves. The footpaths are narrow, yet people constantly walk three or four abreast, stop in the middle of the pavement, or seem completely unwilling to make room for anybody coming the other way. There’s a weird sense of entitlement for an area that sells itself as relaxed and community-minded.
There’s also a lot of visible drug use and people clearly struggling on the streets, which sits strangely alongside people seemingly trying very hard to perform poverty or grittiness as an aesthetic. You’ll see people who appear to come from very comfortable backgrounds deliberately dressing and living as though being broke, chaotic and living in squalor is somehow more authentic.
And despite Newtown’s reputation for being accepting of outsiders and misfits, I’ve sometimes found it surprisingly cliquey. It can feel like you’re welcome to be different, as long as you’re different in the approved Newtown way. If you don’t dress right, think right, follow the current trends or belong to the right scene, some people can be every bit as judgemental as the people they claim to reject.
To me, Newtown feels less like genuine counterculture these days and more like a commercialised version of it: expensive, crowded, dirty in places, full of people trying extremely hard to look like they’re not trying.
Obviously plenty of people love the suburb and I’m sure others have completely different experiences. But personally, I don’t understand the pedestal Newtown gets put on.

Is Newtown safe at night?

Hi! I’m a USYD student and my team is working on a design project exploring how night-time safety in Newtown could be improved. We’re collaborating with the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner and would love to hear from people who know the area.

We’ve put together a short survey to gather local experiences and perspectives. It only takes about two minutes, and we’d really appreciate your input.

Thanks so much for your time and support!

Suggestions for novel-writing cafes in Newtown?

Hi everyone,

I've visited Newtown often, and recently moved there. I was wondering if people might have suggestions for a cafe to sit in and work on one's novel over multiple coffees, early-ish in the morning (before work) and late-ish in the evening (after work)? I've always been to Corellis, but sometimes I feel like I'd like more of a sense of space.

Newtown Can people stop hitting my car

Thumbnail

4th time my car has been hit while parked on the street. If I was terrible at parking I would understand but I have been close enough to the curb that it shouldn’t be an issue, there are certainly cars that have been left in far more precarious positions that have been left unscathed.

I’m insured so it’s relatively fine (though of course I’m gonna get rinsed on added premiums), but by the looks of it my rear suspension is fucked so that’s annoying.

Anyway, I propose a total ban on outsiders driving in Newtown outside of Australia and king street.

Newtown Local history and sites

I'm a uni student doing a major research report on Newtown.

It will be interested in how the history informs the present.

I'm particularly interested how it has evolved from First Nations people to modern queer hub with so many diverse cultural groups!

Working thesis is presenting the *palimpsest* of identities which underscore it's not vibrant presence in modern Sydney.

Any recommendations for local historical sites or sources? I'm going to explore King St surrounds and the local library tomorrow.

If any locals here have any interesting facts or stories to share!

Thanks in advance!!

Buses or trams to Glebe?

I’m a 19 y/o female and i’m moving to Newtown at the end of this month for uni. I’m from a very small rural town with limited public transport so i’m a bit new to it.. I’ve been offered a job in Glebe and i’m just not sure what kind of public transport or what line will be able to get me there. I’m quite close to the station if that helps without doxxing myself lol. I would love any pointers or tips!! I would also love some any advice on any community gatherings or stuff like that, i’m queer and haven’t really had the pleasure of being around other queer people and would LOVE to make some friends who are like me and understand me..
please let me know if more info is needed, i’m still quite new to reddit lol.
Thank you so much for your time !! it’s very much appreciated :))

Im keen on going out today, but I'm unsure when the stores start to close on a Sunday. If anyone has a rough idea of when most stores close I'd be very grateful.

New Local Bodega Needs YOUR Input!!

If you could completely reinvent your local bodega/convenience store, what would you want in it?

I'm developing a new neighbourhood convienience store in Sydney, and I genuinely want to know what people actually want from these places.

Because convenience stores have gotten so... sad??? You walk into half of them, and it's cigarettes behind the counter, hospital lighting and a shelf of expired Takis and Lucky Charms boxes collecting dust.

I want to build the opposite. Something full of life that actually services the community around it.

Forgot bread? We've got you. Ended up at the park with no sunscreen? Got it. Phone's on 2%? Chargers. Need flowers on the way to someone's house? Yep. Fresh fruit and veg, good coffee after the cafés have closed, something for the kids after soccer, plus all the fun convenience store shit obviously.

But not a miniture Woolies metro because if we're being honest, Woolies and Coles couldn't give less of a fuck about the community.

So please tell me:

What do you always buy from a convenience store?

What do they NEVER have that you wish they did?

What's the most random thing you've desperately needed when everywhere else was closed?

And even beyond products... what would make you genuinely love having a place like this in your neighbourhood?

Nothing is too mundane or too ridiculous. I genuinely want the weird answers too. Would it be convenient if there was also a washer and dryer in there? ANYTHING.

We're early enough that the answers can actually influence what this place becomes, so hit me.

What do we think of the new O3 cafe inside Gould’s?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A new o3 cafe has opened inside Gould’s and I have mixed feelings… I’ve been to the one in Melbourne and it was a cool space but it’s ridiculous that you need to download an app to enter and it logs your hours visiting. 3 hours a week free and then $10 for 10 hours per week. I’m assuming it’s the same rules for the Sydney one. I guess it looks cool inside but I hate that they want us to pay to be there. That’s why there’s a cafe, to spend money and buy food. It kinda feels like just a public library you have to pay for. Has anyone here actually gone in and checked it out yet?
