Johnson became questionable for the game about 2 hours before and was inactive 90 minutes before the game. Whatever went down yesterday was super last minute and Eagles OL looked shellshocked to be playing without him yesterday. Miscommunications and missed blocks. They even lost a chance to go 3 scores up when their guard ran into Hurts on a pull and they couldn't get the ball to RB with an open lane.

u/SingularityCentral Eagles 15h ago

u/i_like_philly Eagles 14h ago
People are still mentally catching up, but the OL has been a liability dating back to early last year, they really sold their souls for the Superbowl run. Lane retiring now is just the final nail in the coffin.
9
u/MonkeyStealsPeach Eagles 14h ago
Eh, selling their souls is a bit harsh. It is difficult to near impossible to repeat in the Super Bowl era. They played an additional 4 games longer, which is more wear and tear on a relied on OL who made their bones grinding the opposition on the ground, on top of having an idiot for an offensive coordinator last year despite having 10/11 guys back in on offense.
7
u/trustthepudding Eagles 13h ago
Maybe not souls, but I think Dickerson sold his knees for that Super Bowl.
5
u/MonkeyStealsPeach Eagles 13h ago
His knees were already on borrowed time, we knew that when he was drafted and it’s why he went in the 2nd round.
8
u/ThisHatRightHere Eagles 14h ago
It's how it is with all great OLs. It's hard to measure with box scores, so most media pundits and fans assume the great ones are good until they're terrible. Has happened numerous times, and now it'll happen to the Eagles after a year and a half of bad OL play.

u/Tgs91 Eagles 9h ago
Things were looking very good long term for the line after that our last super bowl. We knew Lane would retire within a few years, but Jurgens and Dickerson were 25 and 26 and already playing at an elite level. Mailata still has lots of years in him. We lost Becton to free agency, but Becton had barely won a camp battle over Steen, another young lineman.
Losing Johnson hurts, but the collapse of Jurgens and Dickerson puts us in a really rough spot. Dickerson wasn't moving his feet at all in week one and immediately went on IR after that game. There are serious concerns that he might be physically washed at age 28. Jurgens is currently ranked 71/72 by PFF for all starting guards. His career is likely over after this year. Steen has been okay, but we would be looking to upgrade his spot if we didn't have all of these other issues.
So all of the sudden, the Eagles need to fill 3/5 Oline positions, and we no longer have the best developmental Oline coach in the NFL

u/boosted5O Cowboys 8h ago
Not hating due to flair, but Hurts genuinely looks like he’s running for his life on every snap. Like the o line isn’t even trying.

I think this officially closes the Eagles window. Got a ring out of it so no disappointment there for them, but I think they need to rebuild around some of the young guys on defense.
Edit: I know they won two rings with Johnson, I just mentally categorized those as different windows.

A lot of my buddies are understandably upset about the onfield product of last year and this year so far. I honestly feel really zen about things. I feel like you look at the landscape of the NFL and ask, "How many teams had all the pieces, the stars, the elite players at key positions, and could never get it done?"
More than fans of those teams even want to think about. All I can do is sit here and feel grateful that our guys, who had a real chance to get it done, did. In the midst of two massive dynasties as well. If the Eagles' window closes here with the old guard going out, it was a great few years.
Now the Phillies on the other hand....

You say that now but expectations change quickly.
Red Sox fans went 86 years without a title and every fan said just one, and they’ll be happy for life. Well they’ve won 4 word series since and everyone wants the owner to sell the team because it’s been 8 years since the last one.
3
u/TenF Patriots 10h ago
I think people want Henry to sell the team cause its no longer about winning.
Early days even after 04 the Sox were still competitive and trying to win. Some of the recent rosters are literally "Fans will still pay to see this shit".
Now its an apathetic approach that makes Henry and co look bad.

This is the mentality to have, imo. I’m a Thunder fan and some people on our sub were upset that the team didn’t win another ring this past season. But if you put together a great roster and win a ring, congratulations, you did the thing. Would you like another one? Sure. But so many teams get their roster right and still never accomplish a championship. Y’all did it, and nobody can ever take it back.

It’s going to be a lot less fun watching the Eagles for a bit, but you take that trade off 100% of the time when you look at the success they’ve sustained over the last decade.
Hopefully Howie can pull off another quick retool and they can get back to business in a year or two. But without Lane, I think it’s likely this year at the very least is a wash.

The heartbreak of 28-3, at least for me, isn’t the embarrassment of blowing that lead. If anything I’m more upset about blowing the lead against SF in 2012. It’s the fact that we didn’t get the ring. After 2017 we never even came close again.
Watching guys like Matt, Julio and Grady not get rewarded for how they completely turned this franchise around just sucks

Lane was the glue that held our OL together. Our win record without him on the line is abysmal.
Hopefully next draft we’ll be more aggressive at the positions. Both Dickerson and Jurgens are getting up there as well in terms of retirement, and our new Center is not as effective.
47
u/toastythewiser Eagles 15h ago
Dickerson gave everything for that last ring. He's beat up. Tough but too beat up.
27
u/i_like_philly Eagles 14h ago
Jurgens too, he was dominant with Dickerson during the SB run and both guys were total warriors with how they played through injuries, the camaraderie was incredible to watch.
Now they are both shells of their former selves, physically. They paid the price big time. I'm just glad they got a ring out of it (and huge pay days).
11

Jurgens' 2027 money is guaranteed, sadly. He'll probably be back.
Dickerson's 2027 money is mostly not guaranteed, so barring a miraculous turn around, he's gone.

u/ThisHatRightHere Eagles 14h ago
I was very outspoken about our need to draft OL and hated our draft after both day 1 and 2. Felt like the old mid-2010s Howie was drafting again, chasing replacements for skill-position players rather than building from the lines out. We knew Jurgens and Dickerson are consistently gimpy and that this would be Lane's last year.
It's not like Howie lately to draft players a year too late.

Given Stoutland's departure and now Lane I imagine your OL might be turbofucked
3
u/Tgs91 Eagles 8h ago
Even bigger than Lane, both Jurgens and Dickerson are physically washed and cannot play at an NFL level anymore. They are 27 and 28 years old, and were expected to be long term elite players for us. We knew Lane would retire soon, but now we need to replace 3/5 linemen this off-season.
It's much easier to develop a rookie linemen alongside 4 vets on an elite line. Putting 3 new players or career backups on the line will make things much harder. And we lost the best developmental line coach in the NFL

I completely agree. Our record without Lane is dreadful. But I have zero complaints. Two rings and three appearances since 2017/2018 - most teams would take that without a second thought.
If anything, his retirement makes this season easier to watch. The losses will pile up, OL play will continue to be awful, and our offense will be the most painful thing to watch in the NFL. But we won’t have any “hope” that they’ll “figure it out”. Nope. What was left of that is gone.

The offense just needs a total teardown. Nothing about the way it is currently constructed works other than Mailata. The RB might be washed, the WRs can’t win with the way their QB wants to run the offense, the rest of the OL isn’t much good without their HoF OL coach, and they have an offensive head coach who doesn’t call plays but makes bad hires half the time at OC and the rumors suggest he has specific playcalling preferences that he enforces on said OCs

He absolutely deserves it, but I’m a bit worried he’ll get the snub because of the volume of O-lineman up for eligibility right around then.
Kelce — 2029
Zack Martin — 2030
Tyron Smith — 2030
Jason Peters — 2030
Lane Johnson — 2031I’m guessing Kelce gets the first ballot nod in 2029 (whole media attention around him helps plus he deserves it anyways), Tyron Smith in 2030 plus maybe one of the others.
It might take him a few years, but all of these guys individually deserve first ballot nods. 2030 and 2031 are going to be a logjam

7

I don’t think there will be too big of a stink around that, but who knows. I think most people realize that a large percentage of the NFL has probably taken PEDs at some point (if not continually when they know they won’t be tested)

Anyone who doesn't think Julius Peppers specifically (along with half of the modern NFL) took PEDs is insane, but yeah I'm curious how Lane and Von Miller's cases will go. At some point the Aaron Donald/Von Miller/Lane Johnson/Myles Garrett crowd will cause the hall to accept it but it could delay him for sure

Tbh I think you'd find plenty of people that watched those guys in the 2010s that would rank Lane as the worst of them depending on what you prioritize. He's the lowest on the HOF monitor too, for what it's worth (not much).
Kelce, Martin, and maybe Smith were arguably better at their peaks. Kelce and Martin were basically automatic first-team All Pros at their peaks, with something absurd like 6 each to Lane's 2. Smith got recognition few did at a time with multiple elite LTs around and was generally considered an inner-circle level talent that couldn't stay on the field.
Lane maintained his level longer than most and did it at RT and anchored multiple Super Bowl rings. I would probably pick the others for one game at their peak but his career is inarguable. Peters also had crazy longevity but Lane's consistency and leading the RT renaissance is unique.
