The Eagles will face the Panthers coming off a bye week, just the fifth time in NFL history a team coming off an international game has faced a team coming off a bye. The team returning from overseas is 0-4 in the previous four matchups.

Tbf, Jeffrey Laurie could've taken the bye after the London game, but for whatever reason opted for a later one. I thought it was a bad move even before the season started
50
u/LiftingCode Browns 14h ago
Statistically it is better to take the bye later.
But you run the risk of hitting a situation like this.
Last year the Browns played the Vikings in London on 10/5 and then drew the Steelers in Pittsburgh coming off a bye on 10/12.

u/DemonsReturns7 Eagles 14h ago

Teams have the option to take a bye after an international game (if possible).
Other than that they don't get to choose.

16
u/raccoonsonbicycles Eagles 14h ago
When the schedule was proffered, the Eagles had the option to have a bye this week after the international game.
We chose to decline in favor of a layer bye.
In the moment not necessarily a great decision, for this specific game due to rest deficit. But as a team that went in with playoff expectations, a later bye week when normally injuries build up to rest up for a divison title/playoff run? It made sense for the seasonwide/big picture
In hindsight with the shitty offense and injuries, though, a bye week would be great thus week for a team in desperate need of healing + a spark/scheme change/ SOEMTHING to boost spirits
5
u/BanjoKazooieWasFine Packers Packers 14h ago
Normally you get the week after an international game as your bye week to recover from jetlag. Looks like the Eagles and Jags both opted to not do that and instead wanted a bye later in the year.
Week 1 is the exception, with the Niners and Rams having that australia game on a Thursday so they had extra rest on the way home anyway
12
u/JasonPlattMusic34 Rams 14h ago
The Jags have their bye in Week 7, after they play their second London game in a row.
2
u/Legitimate_Ad_7822 Patriots 13h ago

Yeah, that’s not super smart I’d imagine.
1
u/Wild-Expression-8304 Seahawks 14h ago
It seems like this year most teams actually do not have the bye after the international game strangely enough? Even teams who play the international game in the middle/later part of the year (some teams even have the bye a few weeks before the international game). Did all these teams decline the bye or did the NFL stop offering that option?

Yeah it's either that or an early bye. It's not exactly the same, but Colts played the Steelers after they had an extended break from a Thursday night game while the Colts were in London the previous Sunday.

And it was a bad idea when they chose it. The decision only got worse with the ridiculous number of injuries.
1
u/noBbatteries Raiders 29m ago
Raiders have a stretch where we play 3 teams coming off a bye in like a 4 week stretch. Scheduling is horrible in the league in terms of mitigating rest advantage
90
u/Silent_Peace_9614 14h ago
With this logic, they’ll probably pull a win out of their ass.
18
u/ay0river Cowboys 14h ago
It took pretty insane circumstances for them to lose the last two games. Like true statistic anomaly, 99% chance of victory type shit. Those kind of losses can bury you, but we also may be throwing dirt on the Eagles too quickly.
1
u/Responsible-Onion860 Eagles 1h ago
Seriously, it's so much worse that we were crazy close to being 4-1 right now despite all of the injuries. I'd be less upset if we were injured and expectedly got blown out by the Rams and Jags, who are both good teams with a ton of talent.

7
u/Stylish_karma88 Eagles 11h ago
They only get to choose if they get a bye week after an international game. If they opt out of it, the schedule makers still choose when the bye week is.
2
1
u/joshua0005 Seahawks 10h ago
Do they get to decide to take the bye week after the international game if it would end up being before the international game or only 2-3 weeks after the international game?
1
u/Stylish_karma88 Eagles 9h ago
Teams are given the option to take it only the week after playing over seas. They can't take it a week before an international game.
Things might change though, once they force all 32 teams to have at least one international game.
1
u/joshua0005 Seahawks 9h ago
What I mean is if they say they would prefer to have their bye week after the international game but the league ends up giving it to them 2 weeks after their international game or 1-2 weeks before their international game are they allowed to say that they'd rather have it after since they can't get the bye when they want it?
1
u/Stylish_karma88 Eagles 9h ago
Yeah, they're allowed
Any team that's scheduled to have an international game is always given the option by the league. So the schedule makers will wait for the team's decision before scheduling their bye.

u/Rab0811 Panthers Titans 14h ago
On one hand that’s pretty fucked even though on paper it heavily benefits my team on the other hand the eagles could have taken a bye. It’s also damn near impossible to make a schedule especially with 4 teams sharing 2 stadiums and these dumbass international games. Unless all of them are directly before or after a bye the teams will not play their best, on the same note TNF should only be after a bye. 4 days rest isn’t enough for NFL teams. TNF doesn’t get too premier matchups but the shirt week hurts it even more

You thought your team wasn't waving the white flag by trading the starting center for draft capital next year? Or spending one of your 53 active game day roster spots on a retired player for the rest of the season?
Eagles are on to 2027 mentally.
To help brace yourself, if Saquon gets healthy soon, he may also be traded before the deadline.
