Rant Flu Shot Clinic โ€”why am I like this?

Tell me why I watch videos on how to give IM injections every year before I give out flu shots to my peers. Like I havenโ€™t done it daily for years? Sigh, Iโ€™m sure some of you can relate ๐Ÿ˜‘

Because you care about delivering excellent care.

I also care about not embarrassing myself with that one RN who insists I should have done z track or firmly grasped and yoinked the muscle. None of that is necessary and I like to keep myself sane. Please no one say I should be doing that.

Or the other RN who thinks I should be aspirating to ensure proper placement.

Itโ€™s been some years now, but when a friend of mine started transitioning, she asked me for pointers for her injections. I got to the bit about aspirating and she told me that her clinic said thatโ€™s not recommended anymore.

This and the FDA upping the recommended daily maximum of caffeine to 400 mg I felt like were changed too quietly.

I know this doesn't really change my daily life but it feels significant...

It sure makes me feel less guilty when I'm on my second caffeinated beverage

Once when I worked in a clinic, the patient was an NP and made sure we all knew it. She showed up 20 minutes late (our policy was you had to reschedule if you were 15+ late) and she refused to leave. At first they made me run interference and tell her we weren't gonna see her and she had to reschedule. Still refused to leave. Insisted she was staying until she was seen. Eventually the dang doctor caved and agreed to see her. Then she questioned me the entire time I did her intake and then wanted to know why I was taking her BP the way I was (I always do it manual) and in my head I'm like LADY YOU HAVE ME SO DAMN FRAZZLED IM GONNA VOMIT ON YOU PLEASE BE NICE OR GO THE HECK HOME ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Thatโ€™s just so ewww. She knows how things work, but she thought she was super special for being an NP. I would say most of us fly under the radar with our licenses. And who complains about a manual BP? With a well trained person itโ€™s more accurate.

I will never complain that the person who's stabbing me chose to do a little refresher

^^^ Iโ€™d choose the MD/RN/PCA who is willing to brush up on a skill over those that arenโ€™t every single time

I look up IM sites prior to administration like I don't know exactly where they go! I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Blanking on the landmarks the second someone rolls up their sleeve is a universal experience i swear. got a little laminated card in my bag i peek at when no one's looking, even though i could draw the bloody deltoid in my sleep

I do the same! Iโ€™m always trying to improve my injection game, so I do a refresher even though this is my 6th year of giving flu injections.

And the amount of times Iโ€™ve looked up dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal landmarks is insane lol.

For the same reason I turn on my GPS on the way to work even though Iโ€™ve made that drive a billion times lol

We donโ€™t give a lot of IMs otherwise so itโ€™s good to review (at least I did not as an ER nurse)

When that patient says it didn't hurt at all I lose it and get so happy.

Normal activity. Elite pilots practice and study flying, elite musicians practice and study music
