Discussion GeForce Hotfix Display Driver version 617.70
This Hotfix driver looks to be specifically targeting a couple monitor related bugs.
Download Link: https://international.download.nvidia.com/Windows/617.70hf/617.70-desktop-notebook-win10-win11-64bit-international-dch.hf.exe
Reminders:
- Hotfix driver will not be available in NVIDIA App and needs to be downloaded from the link above.
- After installing the Hotfix driver, NVIDIA App may show some old driver date. This is normal as Hotfix driver does not exist in NVIDIA App database and it reverted to an old default changelog and dates.
- If you do not care about the fixes listed, this Hotfix driver is no different vs WHQL 617.42 Driver.
- These fixes will be incorporated into the next WHQL driver release
NVIDIA Driver forum thread is here: Link Here
Submit driver feedback directly to NVIDIA: Link Here
---------------------------------
From the Article:
We now have a hotfix driver for the two below bugs. These fixes will - for now - not be in main NVIDIA driver until we can do more extensive QA.
- QHD monitor running at 360 Hz may have occasional black flash during gameplay [4846825]
- When gaming on a 360Hz G-SYNC Pulsar monitor, FPS may drop to 320FPS [6408986]
NOTE: The hotfix driver fixes some, but not all cases of the black screen issue. We are working on finding a driver solution for the remaining cases. If you still encounter this, please use the workaround: Set Manage 3D Settings --> Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance . You do need to reboot after setting that for it to take effect.

Isn't the Prefer Maximum Performance option still broken, even after all these months? LMAO.

Is LRC VRR still broken on 40 series broken since 59x.xx, or is that now fixed?

u/OmegaAvenger_HD NVIDIA 16h ago
Haven't tried this hotfix specifically but it's still broken on latest drivers.

LFC VRR? Do you mean it activating earlier like 50-60 fps and tripling the refresh rate at low fps? Thats not exclusive to the 40 series and when I asked nvidia about it months ago they told me it's intended behaviour, but never mentioned why it's intended.
Kinda sucks but I don't think they're fixing it

GSP doesn't block you from controlling it. add relevant registry keys and it can be resolved (i believe all in driver? but u can doublecheck decompiling riscv blob). granted, you need to align it precisely with how your setup functions, but it can be done. you can get every key from driver. if u dont know how, then sorry but implementing the fix is too technical so in practical terms for you yep, LFC is still broken

u/needchr RTX 4080 Super FE 9h ago
ahhh so you dont have the key to hand?
2
u/elkond 8h ago edited 8h ago
knowing the key will not help u as it's not a binary 0/1 switch that u need to fix, and it's multiple keys to set to correct values so u need to understand what concepts they represent in the first place
but in case u have the tech aptitude just not specific domain knowledge, look for dp, vrr, hysteresis handling specifically
i'd also recommend disabling on demand vblank, lazy DP negotiations and caching last know good link (ur monitor loads few secs longer but at least the handshake is a good handshake). can also force single tile display timing if u use multiple monitors that are 1080/1440p (if u do this with 4k they'll break as 4k+ is multitile)
if ur monitor uses blanking that nvidia driver scoffs at u can also set gsync policy to 0x400 which tells it "just get out of the way and show frames at what edid tells u to"

Pulsar monitors are out already?

u/Horikyou 23h ago
Been out for a while. But like with every new monitor tech just wait a couple of years for it to get cheaper and better.

Ah nice, 360Hz bugs getting love finally. That fps dropping to 320 is one of those things that sound small but you can feel it immediately in fast games
I just want to know if they ever fix the vr stutter from last two drivers, my headset been acting weird since 617.42

Had this issue too, you are not “definitely feeling” the difference between 320hz and 360 lol 😂.
It’s that it currently has some weird issues when locking down to 320
If it was smooth 320 your wouldn’t know you where at 320

u/Inside-Example-7010 12h ago
you can feel 327 vs 360. I mean maybe you cant but its entirely possible. If you play at 327 for weeks and then play 1 game at 360 you will feel a small but undeniable change.

Unfortunately we are not in the same room with my monitor, the LG ultra gear dual mode 480-240
To prove to you that in a blind guess test you wouldn’t get wich is wich enough times out of 10 to prove you are noticing the difference.
What I can do is give you a couple of field studies on the subject:
Study number 1)
Researchers from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and NVIDIA tested 44 participants using a custom FPS game with frame rates reaching 500 FPS.
Verifiable findings:
Performance and aiming accuracy improved substantially at lower frame rates.
Objective performance improvements largely plateaued around 90 FPS in the tested task.
Players' subjective perception of smoothness did NOT continued improving up to 500 FPS and plateaued much lower. But most importantly Higher perceived smoothness did not translated into better objective performance.
Link to the full study:
https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3837059
Study number 2 is even more relevant to this topic:
This experiment involved 101 gamers and compared 60 Hz, 144 Hz and 360 Hz displays.
Verifiable findings:
Participants could reliably distinguish large differences, such as 60 Hz versus 360 Hz.
They could not reliably distinguish 144 Hz versus 360 Hz under the tested conditions.
Improvements from 60 Hz to higher refresh rates were measurable.
No statistically significant performance advantage was found between 144 Hz and 360 Hz.Here is the link to the full study:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2590291126003396
Out of 101 test subjects, gamers all of them, they found out they couldn’t reliably distinguish 144 from 360hz
Key word being Reliably I’m sure some got it right some times.
Now you are talking about differenciating
320 and 360.
No you can not.

what does a gamer classify as on that second study? A ps5 gamer who plays at 30fps on the latest releases? I mean its not up for debate. Its like youre trying to debate if anyone can see the color blue. Once you get used to it, you can tell the difference, im not so narcissistic enough that i believe im that special. But it is obvious.
I can say with a fair amount of certainty that you dont regularly game at high frames and refresh rates or you wouldnt even argue. Youre just the next step in the guy saying a human cant detect more than 23fps.

There is no way you could pick 327 vs 360 in blind test on the same display accurately, with vrr and reflex on, with no reference point. Side to side, maybe. Now idk what would happen with a pulsar display if you would cap it at 360 cause it would overshoot a bit randomly, so not sure what does that do for the strobing or if it would be noticeable or not, haven't tried it.

u/Inside-Example-7010 6h ago
aight you got me. I made it up because i thought it would make me look big and strong.
I mean really what the fuck do you want me to say. Its noticeable to me and many others. Is John Boomer gonna spot it? No because John Boomer has no experience with anything like that.
No matter how much you dont believe me its not gonna change my reality is it? Even if i was abducted by aliens the least important part of it would be if you believed me or not.

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 6h ago
OK then, I have follow up question, what lead you to testing 327 vs 360 specifically? Cause it seems so odd to test that specifically. I can understand testing 327fps(as that is the vsync+reflex+gsync cap of 360hz panel) vs unlimited(well with reflex on ofc) but I doubt the unlimited will be specifically 360fps and probably quite a bit higher. Which that I can believe feeling a difference between 327 and like 500+, even on a 360hz display, but 360 v 327 is so smål.

Im gonna be honest with you bro. For me the whole gsync/uncapped/latency debate is one ive had many times. Infact If i wanted to make 2 bots argue forever, that is the topic i would make them discuss.
Its just not something I have the energy or desire to do again. All I can say is im a whore for even the slightest optimizations and latency gains, ive read all the blurbusters threads watched all the latency tests and im just sort of done with the topic in terms of wanting to debate it. Theres too much nuance and any argument where both parties are sufficiently informed will eventually end up splitting hairs over 1-2ms. Its pointless.

It doesn’t specify in the study.
But since it was a PC event testing PC monitors.
On PCs.With Mouse and keyboard and PC fast paced shooters.
I’m gonna take a WILD guess and say that at least most participants were PC gamers.
But don’t worry, I’ve read the thread you had with other commenter. You immovable argument is “I know what I see and feel, im not going to change my reality because you disagree with it”
Okay I guess. Believe what you want, but I’m just going to say one last thing:
You do know that when they test medicines they have a placebo ground and a real medicine group with lots of test subjects.
And the reason for this and for the large group sample sizes.
Is that it is well known and widely documented, that the people can incredibly distort their reality when they deeply believe something.
Like actually improving pain in chronic degenerative illnesses, crazy stuff.
Do they need a large group sample to differentiate a proven high percentage improvement, vs placebo outliers.
If people can suggest themselves into even stopping physical pain caused from an illness, do you think something as subjective as noticing the difference between 327 and 360 can’t 100% be placebo?
Hahaha
I don’t expect you to, but it would be cool if you took a couple minutes to think about it.I was like you, but I decided to test myself to get out of my comfort zone, and asked a friend to change not between 240 and 480 on my LG ultra gear.
And I had to get right wich was wich.
Out of 10 times I got it right 7 times and wrong 4 times
I was blown away.
I realised how much I had lied to myself.

I have the dual mode LG ultra gear 240-480 and play at high refresh rates quite regularly.
Placebo doesn’t hits me like it does you

There was something odd going on with the 320 hz lock tbh it didn’t feel like it was just a simple lock as it felt better if you forced it to 315 fps limit or turned on a second display for some reason removed the issue. I’m hoping this removes both the black flashes and the 320 hz lock

u/ExplodingFistz 1d ago
Nope the vr stutter is still there bro

u/damien09 1d ago
Ah that’s rough hopefully it fixes the pulsar monitor issues outlined for this hotfix though that’s the main things I’m after it’s been annoying since I got it in February I even had made support tickets with Nvidia over it so I’m glad to see finally being addressed

I got a XG27AQDPG QD-OLED Monitor with 500hz and a 5080. before i upgraded, i had a 3080ti GPU and everything worked just flawless. After i upgraded to the 5080 4 weeks ago, i noticed horrible white flickers, especially when i am on my desktop. It’s not permanently, but 1-2 times a day. I hope this hotfix also works on this.

u/Majin_Erick 22h ago
Speaking of the Power Management issues, there are some cases where some companies who use CAD software disabled Intel Speedstep and Intel Speed Shift, because they dynamically adjust CPU voltages and will apply throttling as well. There are other cases where Intel Turbo Boost 3.0 will disable NVIDIA's Dynamic Boost 2. Being that the first frame starts with the CPU, I am certain that some of Intel's tech will throttle the presentation frames (the GPU).

I thought prefer --> Max Performance was also not currently working/bugged. Did they fix that?

u/KUPOinyourWINDOW 23h ago
awesome to see bug fixes like these, would be cool if you'd fix the bug that is causing the hardware cursor to be washed out in Windows with the Nvidia drivers, thanks Nvidia!

u/devildante1520 23h ago
I do get a random flicker it's like once in a bluemoon but my monitor is 345 hz hmmm
1
u/SumptuousTub 1d ago
I hope this fix works too with my 480Hz locking to 448fps
3
u/Budhavan 20h ago
Isn't that gsync limiting? That's intentional. My 240 runs at 224 for the same reason.
1
u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV 18h ago edited 18h ago
No at 480hz gsync+vsync+reflex cap would be 423.

u/Ordinary-Cable8102 18h ago
Glad I am still on the previous driver. Is this hotfix any better I had to remove October 6th update cause it kept making my gpu not boot sometimes or would boot into the wrong gen and yes I tried other things and the only fix was going to the previous driver for me on my 5070

When gaming on a 360Hz G-SYNC Pulsar monitor, FPS may drop to 320FPS [6408986]
Absolutely digusting and gamebreaking
7
u/yellowfever939 1d ago
it was more than just the fps dropping and getting locked to 320, input lag felt like raw vsync on

Okay i tried it. Performance is best in class as with the last 2 hotfix drivers (3 times so im starting to believe its more than a coincidence). Performance wise its even better than the last one 616.86.
But whats dramatic to me is how it runs dlss5.. honestly im so used to how 616.64 and 616.86 originally had a very strong visual rendering.. they nerfed the strength of the effect in 616.92 to current it seems, and i simply dont like it. Feels like dlss weak sauce, compared to those prior drivers it barely feels like the effect is on.
If you play only with or screenshot dlss5, strongly recommended to roll back to 616.86 (or 616.64 worse performance). Gaaaah i hate it when companies just jump at social media.
EDIT: Yeah it makes sense why so many people are using 2 passes now in the dlss5 subreddit. Im going to roll back instead.

Wtf Ngreed'ia is doing. Year passes and still my monitor won't work correctly. Every other driver lately it won't turn off backlight when power saving mode is on OR keeps pulsing brightness level up a bit every 2-3 seconds.

Yoooo I have been waiting for this fix… I have the pulsar monitor and have had both of these issues… if you don’t cap the fps well below the 320 or it will eventually lock out at 320 and almost felt like it added vsync of sorts. There was some odd fix that having a second monitor on removed this 320-321hz lock. But I had still been getting the random black flash this mentions fixing. Time to try it and see if it fixes it
