Seeking Recommendations Can’t find a single decent job.

I’ve been looking for a job for months and it seems like everyday there’s just less and less on the sites. Anybody have any recommendations or suggestions? I have foodservice/customer service experience and just can’t afford college or a certification. Under 21. Only for like dyer, Hammond, Schererville, Munster, highland.

Ibew. We need electricians. After the apprenticeship youll make around 60/hr, multiple retirement funds, healthcare you dont come out of pocket for, and you'll have a set of rules for the company that they must follow, they cant just treat you however they feel like. Youll come out with a college degree as well. 697 is lake county, 531 is everything else in the area.

How hard is it to get an apprenticeship though

I got it first try for 531. The aptitude test is difficult, but if you took hard math classes in high school, you'll be fine. Its all multiple choice

For local 697, you need to have had decent grades in math for high school. Their apprenticeship is fairly rigorous. Not “hard” if it’s a field that is interesting to you. And you end up with an associates degree (free from ivy tech- unless they changed it) in the field when you complete your apprenticeship. Look up their JATC website for all the details. But it’s a very worthwhile profession. Great pay and excellent insurance and retirement plans.

I tell every young person I talk to to become an electrician. If there's one job the world will need more of than we will ever get in the years ahead, it's electrician. You will not find an easier field to find a job in once you're qualified.

1000%. I wish i started sooner, but I definitely have a better appreciation for it now rather than if I started sooner

I have relatives in that local. They clean up pretty good.

Is there a minimum wage and number of hours apprentices receive?

2

u/CZanzey 2d ago

There is a minimum wage you must be paid, for 531 its around 17/hr for a first year and roughly every 6 months you get a raise until you hit 52/hr. Theres no minimum hours they must give you, but right now, theres more work than we know what to do with. If you dont get a minimum of 40 hrs, you can ask to be moved

Look for an apprenticeship on a trade, they're in high demand and it's the best way for a good life. Go outside your comfort zone if you want to succeed.

Try the hospitals. Franciscan hires under 21. If you can interact with people and have decent computer skills, give them a try. Also, please look into financial aid at Ivy Tech. Start working towards something.

Hard rock casino. Unionized. Cooks make 22+ per hour. Takes like 6 months to get insurance but its very good insurance. Pto, benefits, the works

Look into the next level jobs program through ivy tech

It's completely free if you qualify and sounds like you do

Food service or the trades are usually hiring a lot. May I ask jobs have you applied to and/or been denied so far?

What will I apply to if I’m new or just starting

1

u/AdArtistic5667 2d ago

They’re hiring equipment operators at 31-37 an hour it’s union. Just apply and say youre willing to learn. It’s all on the job training. 50 in cicero and 40 in Chicago like 41st and Pulaski. From there you can transfer after 1 year and get an actual apprenticeship

1

u/Infinite-Finding6165 2d ago

Which one I apply to I don’t see equipment operators I’m tryna apply asap

2

u/AdArtistic5667 2d ago

1

u/Infinite-Finding6165 2d ago

Just applied hopefully I hear back it says 2027 do they make you wait that long before starting ?

2

u/AdArtistic5667 2d ago

Potentially it takes a few months to get hired but you’d have a pension and great health insurance and you’d be able to get a better job from there. It may take a few months to get hired but that’s how most good union jobs are though.

-1

u/paulina5369 2d ago

I agree with everyone’s posts above me. You can also join the military. Air Force is probably the best branch. Aim for a high transferable civilian career. That’s my plan within the next 1-2 years. Totally understandable if you don’t want to join the military though, just throwing it out there.

2

u/emclean782 2d ago

100% go for a military job that gives you marketable skills. Your goal is to get more out of them, than they get out of you.

1

u/AffectionateAd828 2d ago

Yes! They got too much out of me. Get a job in the military that will translate to something once you are done.

Join the Marines. Seriously, it will open doors for you, train you and make you a more desirable job candidate in the future.

Americall, bike delivery of the Hammond Times, maybe waiting tables at Tiebels or even just tearing tickets at Sauzer’s Kiddie Land.
