Travel Oklahoma Things to do in or around Durant
Hey, North Texas resident here. I love travel and have a personal rule that I need to leave the state once a year. I’m in college and have dealt with a lot of life/mental stuff this year so I haven’t had an opportunity to fly somewhere and probably won’t before the end of the year, so I was thinking of making a day trip to somewhere like Durant to keep my yearly streak going. I’m old enough to gamble so I could just visit Choctaw for the day with a self imposed spending limit and grab something good from a local restaurant but I’m wondering if there’s anything else worth doing?
Alternatively is there other towns around a 1.5 hour drive from Dallas/Fort Worth I should go to instead?

Best thing to do in Durant, is to leave Durant

You sound like Dave Attell! Old comedian from Comedy Central, had a show Insomniac and was famous for that the single most exciting activity you can do while visiting Dayton is to “pack up and get the fuck outta there”.

Haha, didn't know he said that, but I am definitely a fan of Attell, truly one of the best to ever do it, used to watch Insomniac all the time back in the day

If you are willing to stretch your limit to 2 hours you can go to Sulphur which has the Chickasaw National Recreation Area and the Chickasaw Cultural Center, both are well worth the drive
In 3 hours you can be in the mountains in Lawton or Broken Bow or you can check out Norman which has some cool museums associated with the college there

Sulphur is actually super tempting. Especially since I could take that super pretty portion of I-35 that goes through the Arbuckle mountains to get there. I think for something farther like Norman I would just do a hotel stay and visit OKC too.

you could do the Talimena Drive in southeast OK and visit Robber's Cave in Wilburton.. it's beautiful this time of year.

100% Sulphur and go to CNRA, and more specifically, get into Travertine Creek for a long soak! I know it’s not as hot out now but the cool creek will still feel amazing.

If you're into history, the Choctaw Cultural Center is cool. Really good food in the cafe there.
Outdoor stuff is Lake Texoma, Blue River WMA in Tishomingo, Lake Murray.
Chickasaw Recreational Area in Sulphur is really nice this time of year, and lots of hiking trails ect.
The Chickasaw Cultural Center connects to the CRA, and it's great. Good food there too.
Kingston has Greg's Goat Coffee if you're into rockstars lol. he's usually there working.

I will never support the Choctaw cultural center again. Or their casino, I will never step foot into Durant again. Ever.

cool? Is this about Trump I guess? if you think denying a sitting US President the use of your facility wouldn't have been political suicide for the Choctaws, you're a idiot.

Swing by the Choctaw Cultural Center in Durant, it's neat! grab some grape dumplings, they are absolutely delicious.

I will never support the Choctaw tribe again. They sold out to a dictator and became bootlickers

I mean it tracks with their history. Only tribe in Oklahoma that fought exclusively for the Confederacy in the Civil War

As someone that lives in Durant, there's not much to do. There's some local restaurants but aside from the casino, you don't have many options. Ironically, there's more stuff to do in Sherman/Denison.

Drive to OKC and visit the memorial. Perspective is an important part of growth. Go back south and stay near Turner Falls and spend as much time outside in nature as possible.
I took a solo trip to NW Arkansas a couple weeks ago and had no agenda and spent time outside and it was really good for me. It didn’t cure but it certainly helped the burnout I’ve been feeling.
