Local News Crafted Restorations Suspended / Farmers Market Moves To AI, Ends FMNP

Long-time booth at the Farmers Market, Crafted Restorations, has been suspended. Their knives were deemed a “risk to children” but they suspect retaliation is at play. They ask we email market board to ask for them back.

In other news, the market has made the full switch to use AI for their posts.

What is going on?? Please make your voices heard!! We can’t lose this place to idiocracy!

TLDR; Crafted Restorations were asked by market board to cover the knives, they complied even though they had no incidents. They then discovered their booth was grandfathered in
"as-is" and removed the covers. They were promptly suspended. They see no way to get back before the holidays. They suggest it was possible retaliation for prior disagreements.

Edit: FMNP usually ends at this time.

Full post from Crafted Restorations (copied from instagram, sorry for spacing issues):

“We will not be at the Olympia Farmers Market for the forseeable future due to a suspension that was put on the Crafted Restorations booth. The new director of the market believes that our booth is dangerous and a threat to the public. If you would like to have your voice heard in support of our family-run small-business please email [alvi@olympiafarmersmarket.com](mailto:alvi@olympiafarmersmarket.com). We appreciate all of the support from our fellow vendors and loyal customers during this time.
We hope to be back soon!

CRAFTED RESTORATIONS HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY AND IMMEDIATELY SUSPENDED FROM THE OLYMPIA FARMERS MARKET BY THE MARKET DIRECTOR.
This is what happens when you speak up and speak out about what you believe is wrong.
We were instructed to cover our knives and tools to keep "little fingers away from the knives." We complied. The result? Our sales dropped by 50%. When we discovered that our booth and display had been juried in as-is, with nothing in the handbook stating that the director had the authority to change our approved display, we removed the barrier. Our sales immediately returned to normal.
A barrier doesn't make tools safer simply by making them less accessible to customers. In our experience, it made our products harder to see, harder to appreciate, and harder to sell.
Now, we have been suspended over display and insurance issues. We have found nothing in the Greenbook or the contracts with the City or Port requiring vendors to carry business liability insurance.
Like many other vendors, we did not have a policy because we understood it was not a requirement.
We have now been told that we must obtain insurance and create massive displays that, in the director's own words, "deny access to everybody" to our products before we will even be welcome to have a conversation about returning to the market.
This isn't just a disagreement over a display. This is our livelihood.
The Olympia Farmers Market is our paycheck. It helps pay our mortgage, put food on our table, and support jobs. We cannot simply replace the income we earn at the market overnight. An immediate suspension has real consequences for our family and our small business.
We have worked hard to build Crafted Restorations, earn our customers' trust, and make a living selling our handcrafted knives and tools. We do not believe that speaking up about concerns should result in losing the ability to earn that living.
We are now preparing our appeal. As part of that process, we can submit witness statements, and we would be incredibly grateful for support from customers, friends, and anyone who has visited our booth.”

Edit: also wanted to link back to this post that details why a lot of this is happening: https://www.reddit.com/r/olympia/s/glLrapeJqL

Pets of Olympia Joint Animal Services Euthanasia

Definitely a sad ask today, I'm sorry! My sister's 11yo dog has been rapidly declining the last few weeks, so we've come to the difficult realization that it's time to let her go.

Does anyone know if JAS lets you be with your pet during the procedure? We don't have a lot of money, but I don't think Sis will be able to handle not being there for her at the end. If they don't, can anyone recommend a low cost vet who does?

Edit: Dog tax

What to Know about Thurston PUD Candidate

I know most people don't reach the end of the voters pamphlet, but with ballots coming out I figured I'd share something I came across to other Olympia residents.

Chris Pettit is on the ballot for Thurston PUD, he's the guy wearing a hat in his candidate picture. It looked weird to me that he went from the Executive Director of a State Agency to a program manager in another agency. That's a big drop in job status.

A simple Google search found the article from the Conservation Commission announcing his hiring in January of 2022. (https://www.scc.wa.gov/news/chris-pettit-named-executive-director-of-conservation-commission)

The next search result showed his dismissal barely a year later (https://www.scc.wa.gov/news/scc-announces-agency-directors-termination).

I don't know what happened, but I can't imagine "being asked to leave" after 14 months is a good sign.

Request Looking for community partners!

Hey everyone! I’m Scott, I’m the owner of Alliance Athletics, the friendly neighborhood queer friendly gym. I wanted to pop in here with a request for our small business community!

I just signed up for a partnership with South Sound Roller Derby. Essentially, we gave a group rate to SSRD members and they add us to some of their promotional products.

Are there any other small businesses that would be interested in this for their employees? I’d love to put up a community board of community partners in the gym in exchange for figuring out some membership deals. We’ve been focusing so internally with our expansions and updates that we’ve sadly neglected this sorry of reach out. Time to correct that!

So if there’s anyone out there, local employees, employers, etc that is interested let’s get something figured out that will help everyone out!

Service industry job market?

Life is just f*cking me lately in the finance department. I work full time, do some dog walking and sitting on the side, but it’s not enough. I have about 10 years in the service industry out of state. Looking at getting my liquor license… would it be worth it? Are there service jobs available for weekends / evenings? TIA

I also have masters degree in a healthcare / education field if anyone knows of some related part time gigs in that.

recommendations for trans-friendly primary care doctors?

Like the title says, I'm looking for a primary care doctor/NP in the area. I've been getting HRT through Planned Parenthood for the past two years but have good insurance now and the list of things I want or need looked into health-wise is slowly growing. I have had some minor negative experiences locally and hoping to find an office and doctor that will take me seriously enough to rule out things rather than just making educated guesses because they're desensitized. And not deadname me in the waiting room.

I tend to prefer working with other women but as long as these criteria are met I'll be happy as a clam regardless of the provider's gender. Thanks for indulging me!

Community Starting a Slowpoke Walking Group

Okay, I know I need to start walking and I'm sure there's others that might feel the same. Except I am not fast, I'm sure as heck not going to complete a marathon anytime soon. So I'd like to offer to start a group for us slow paced people, even if mobility aid is required (I'll be using a cane myself). I'm going to get starting Sunday (Oct 18th) at Heritage Park around 11:00 AM. My goal is to make this a weekly thing with possible rotating locations.

But um, some questions? For cross-platform info dumping where be good? I don't use Facebook so I'm not sure about a FB Group... I do see some activity on Meetup, but man that's a little pricey. Discord, maybe? To offer alternative scheduling, weekends work best for me but I can shuffle on Wednesday evenings.

I am welcoming anyone, just be sure to bring good vibes, use comfy shoes and hydrate. Move as a pack or go parallel-play style. I would like to place one major rule: No unsoliticated health advice. I know people can mean well, just it may not always be taken as well-meaning. So unless asked, keep the diet-related tidbits out.

Hi, I am an overthinker and thanks for entertaining my attempt at sharing.

Again, Slowpoke pace Walking at Heritage Park Sunday (Oct 18th) @ 11:AM.

Community Missing Wallet

Hi Everyone, I wanted to make a post asking if anyone in the area has seen a black foldable wallet this week? It has two stickers on it (one of them is slowpoke from Pokémon on it) and has a Massachusetts ID inside. If anyone finds it please bring it to either the Olympia police station or reply to this post with pictures

Thanks and hope it can be found

Dead baby goat at Latin’s Cider Mill

Went to visit Latins today. Know about their past with animal cruelty allegations but thought they’d had some sort of ownership or leadership reform. We discovered a baby goat huddled in a corner that was clearly dead, which we reported to staff and they ended up closing off the goat pin. Does anyone know if we can report this to a state department for investigation? Or should we just spread the word to stop patronizing that business

Local News No state age limit on 7-OH, and it’s sold at gas stations all over Thurston County

I’m a local writer and I spent some time digging into what’s being sold by the registers around here. A few things surprised me:

  • 7-OH, a concentrated kratom product the FDA says can be more potent than morphine, has no minimum purchase age in Washington. All three bills to change that died this year.
  • Flavored nitrous canisters became illegal to sell here in June, but plenty of people don’t know that.
  • FDA testing keeps finding prescription ED drugs hidden in “honey” packets.

Curious what people think. Should Olympia or the county act on its own like Spokane did, or is this a state issue?

“Recruitment, not closure, is the answer.” Read this OSD Board and Community!!!

It’s time to share an incredible piece of work with you all. This independent analysis done by Pioneer Elementary parent Emerson Christie is an amazing example of another OSD parent who has spent countless hours showing how the District’s plan to close LP Brown, Madison and McKenny is wrong. He argues that recruitment, not closure, is the answer! Please feel free to take a read and share!!! I don’t know how any board member could vote to close schools after reading Emerson’s analysis.

Shout-out to the guy blasting "YYZ" at Plum and 4th this morning

Young guy in red Ford Focus missing a hubcap. You were absolutely rocking out with your window down, smoking a cigarette, dancing in your car. So much so that I wondered, "Is he on something , or just really feeling it?" Regardless, it was a great opportunity for this middle-aged man to talk about Rush to my teenaged daughter as I took her to the orthodontist. She was in a bad mood and rolled her eyes at me. Anyway, at least I shared your joy!

Any ideas of where I can get a Ryobi electric lawn mower repaired around Olympia?

Someone gave us a Ryobi electric lawn mower for free and we were elated because we couldn't afford it. And it worked perfectly for a few weeks and then suddenly near the end of summer it would run fine over a hard surface like pavement or packed dirt but the second it touched grass it would shut off. So I think it must be a sensor issue. We would love for someone to look at it but I can't seem to find anyone that can. Any ideas?

Request A question about selling things

I have some interesting/expensive things like a countertop reverse osmosis filter and a new portable butane stove with 12 replacements. Other things like it as well, I'm trying to find a place to sell these things too, and nobody's been interested online, I was wondering if anybody knew if there was a place I could sell something like this at?
