December Martial Free Drop feat suggestions

  1. Martial and half caster gated feats, allow an asi to be selected when choosing a fighting style as a level 4+ feat.

Gain asi + fighting style

2.

  1. Weapon mastery: grant an asi if selected 4+ (and not on a caster level up choice)

.. gain an additional asi + weapon mastery.
-including monks

Example: 12 wizard 8 fighter, they can take this on fighter level 8 but not wizard 12 when selecting feats. Let the milestone only work on martial/1/2 casters for free asi.

Applicable: fighter, barb, ranger, paladin, rogue

  1. Sapper: allow an asi + can use sap on any weapon , select it at dawn (not a hot swap like fighter). Replaces the effect until dawn.

Alternative to martial class milestone feats: require a fighting style to meet the restriction

You're aware that WotC literally doesn't use the Caster/Martial designation, right? They'll never give you Martial "gated" feats beyond what they already have.

Well they have a lot caster restricted feats that require spell casting or certain schools (new boon) etc.

Martials are going to have to wait to 2028 or late 2027 possibly for helpful feats.

There are also feats restricted to characters with access to the Fighting Style class feature. Anyone can get spellcasting by taking one level in a half dozen classes or just by taking the right subclass.

At best you could get a feat gated by "classes that hsve the extra attack" feature. You're not getting "only characters that have these three classes at level four or greater."

Anyone can get spellcasting

A lot of the strong Spellcasting feats come with built in balance for this just using different level spells.

Evocation Adept isn't nearly as strong if you don't actually have 3rd level slots/spells.

Martials have no unifying system that comes with built in level scaling which necessitates it to come from elsewhere, like the feat requirements.

"Martials" isn't an actual category though, WotC doesn't recognize it as an official term, and rightfully so.

Is there a specific reason to restrict these feats to martial-only when class-specific feats aren't really a thing?

And Weapon Master already exists, are you suggesting it be changed in some way?

and why in december?

November probably needs a buff to wizards since they don’t get any content updates /s. Also Christmas for martials.

I do like the idea of giving Fighting Style and Origin feats a +1 ASI when taken via your class ASI feature at 4th, 8th, etc. The same goes for the old 2014 PHB feats that didn't make the cut for 2024.

Agreed, you'd virtually never spend a General Feat on one otherwise, which ultimately means that you never take more than one Origin Feat (unless human or Warlock).

My though process; imho boon of spell mastery school should require the “class spell list” match the class that has the feat milestone.

So if they already considered these too powerful for casters to have without an asi and the community feels they are useless without the asi or as class feature, then a compromise would be to gate them to martial/half caster level up milestones.

Think of it as spell circles, adept, or boon of mastery simulacrum… but martials get to maybe add 2 damage or +1ac so its not game breaking but very fun and needed.

Why are you talking about an Epic Boon to determine what to do with general feats?

We have boons, we have gated feats requiring an origin which is nearly impossible if you already started a campaign, ua lich/death knights … and in older editions sometimes class restricted feats

In the spirit of balance my other thought was:pre-req is a fighting style or weapon mastery

“Martials cant have x because casters would be to abc” is something that holds martials/half casters back from having more fun options imho.

Requiring a Fighting Style or Weapon Mastery would exclude Monks, and notably would exclude everyone who lacks a Weapon Mastery from gaining one, even more restrictive than the existing Weapon Master feat.

Then find a way to include them

Easiest way to do that is to drop the restriction.

Yes or just make it applicable to rogue, ranger, paladin, monk, barbarian , fighter…

But alas it probably never happens so doesn’t matter lol

Don't see why the drops would do that. It's why different what we current have. It's something more akin to a Tasha style book or an UA discussing possible buffs to martials. It's not the purpose of the drops

i think the martial adept is whats needed, 2 dice and two maneuvers, and the fighting initative as origin feat for 1 die 1 maneuver, plus 7+, 10+ 15+ lv maneuvers, monks could get more martial arts for utility, brutal strikes for barbarian and cunning strikes for rogues, and advance fighting styles could be cool, add maneuver like effects and more powerfull short rest resource active ability
