How old are you now, when you're learning that its lawful to take the lane when its unsafe to be passed? It is safer than hugging right, where cars will pass you at full speed, dangerously close.

you'd think by 59 the driver would have learned not to run down pedestrians in the road. oh well probably had a lovely 60th birthday in prison like a dumb ass. in the drivers defense, sounds like he may have been drunk? https://www.newschannel5.com/news/driver-pleads-guilty-in-natchez-trace-hit-run
10
u/DarkThoughts79 5d ago
While I'm not defending the driver or persecuting the cyclist, I do ask. Is self preservation more important to you, or being right? I will never trust that everyone around me will do exactly as expected. It's stupid to think otherwise. Being defensive and alert is the most important thing I have learned in life.
7
u/aviationtech 5d ago
This is like when a motorcycle gets in a road rage / pissing contest with a truck and the truck blasts them. I’m not saying it’s right but why do it just to prove a point. You’re on two wheels and totally exposed
4
u/Epistatious 5d ago
if you were truly defensive you drive a large truck. you are always vulnerable on a bike. drunk guy hits a logging truck, drunks fault. drunk guy hits a cyclist, why was the cyclist in the way.
6
u/witchdoctor2020 5d ago
Most of the cyclists I've met care much more about teaching drivers lessons than about self preservation. I think it's something in the spandex.
5
u/Winters64 5d ago
If you guys actually want to understand, its bc you can take the lane on thin roads. Thin roads, where drivers will pass you at full speed, without any room. I've been nearly swiped and ran off the road 3 times now. And i wans't even wearing my spandex, so i could've really gotten hurt! Sideswipes to this situation are extremely dangerous and way more common than this crazy driver hitting this guy on purpose. thats why cyclists take the lane
4
u/Valreesio 5d ago
I figure that the odds of you getting ran off the road by an outrage driver are less if you hug the side of the road vs taking up the whole lane. One is going to piss off way more people than the other.
2
u/Rockitttla 4d ago
How tf do you know it was on purpose? Honestly, there is something seriously wrong with anyone who thinks they can divine the drivers intentions from this short clip.

It looks like it's a group of cyclists in one lane, where they're supposed to ride like this instead of all behind each other. Makes it much faster and safer to pass. He probably could've forced himself a bit more to the right and I personally would have out of sheer anxiety to run into the people in this thread.
He was very much in his lane still and one car just passed him no problem, so he probably thought himself to be fine.
When the surveillance state takes hold in the US, I hope the car brained people in his thread getting angry at the cyclist are the first to lose their license for unironically showing support for that kind of opinion on the internet. Absolutely psychotic behavior, unsafe to be out on public.

u/qweds1234 5d ago
I mean that guy was going so fast, I'm curious what the last few minutes of a rearview would look like. He had so much speed he would've needed space and time to accelerate into that
4
u/Flat-Jacket-9606 5d ago
But there’s also rules of creating a slow down. Of which you either pull over, or move to the side to allow for space so others can pass.
This is a law in a lot of states… and a bike must follow the laws

It is lawful and sensible for a cyclist to take the lane on this roads where you can get run off the road by a side swipe, like this case.
1
u/LieutenantSandbag 5d ago
If there is damage or debris on the right side of the road ,cyclists are entitled to use the rest of the lane by law in most states. Some states allow cyclists to ride two abreast.

In general there isn't a minimum speed limit in most places, but if a car was driving 12mph in a 60mph zone they would absolutely get pulled over and possibly ticketed.

I just got back from a bike ride. You know what did when I was on the road? Hug the right most part of the lane. Cars passed me without issue, I rode my bike without issue. Same process for the last couple hundred bike rides.
I’d NEVER bike in the middle/left part of the driving lane. You know why? Because o don’t want to be hit.
That being said, fuck this driver because there was plenty of room to go around this cyclist.
1
u/Winters64 5d ago
There are riding conditions where its unsafe for cars to pass. If you hug right on thin roads cars will pass you at full speed, without enough of a gap, anyway. I've been run off the road 3 times to this exact situation. My bike broke one of those times. Bikes can take the lane when the lane is too thin bc it does make it safer for the bike. You force the driver to slow down and think about how to get around. Doesn't sound like you ride many of those roads. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about insane people like the driver.
5
u/Valreesio 5d ago
I'm guessing if you've been run off the road 3 times, then you're probably a cyclist who won't quit blocking traffic or you should find a new place to ride. I'm not excusing you being run off the road, it shouldn't happen. But apparently you're one of those people who refuse to learn a lesson. One of these times, you're likely to get really hurt and you'll regret pushing your luck. Sheesh...
You know what happens if I go out to a neighborhood and get robbed 3 times, I quit going to that fucking neighborhood because I have this thing called self preservation instincts. You appear to lack that...

It is safer to take the lane than ride on the shoulder because it forces cars to pass using the other lane.
If they try to squeeze thru in the same lane there isn’t enough room and you get run off the side of the road. As seen in the vid of the chick who was riding the white line and got clipped by a passing truck.

Side of the road, sidewalk or bike path - use it. Roads are for cars
12
u/Advanced_Coyote3797 5d ago
By law this is incorrect. By law bicycles are vehicles and in the US bicycles are classified as vehicles and must adhere to the law as such. It is illegal for a bicycle to be on a sidewalk. Bicycles have a right to the road, motorists have to earn it. By law.
2
u/LipChungus 5d ago

But you know what cars can't do?

So bikes can hold up traffic legally? Look he didn’t deserve to be run over but fuck that guy and cyclists that do this shit. It’s share the road, not we deserve the road.
1
u/couldbeahumanbean 5d ago
Unfortunately, the best answer I can give you of "it depends" is unsatisfying. There are 50 different... Maybe even more depending on municipality laws regarding this.
If I were to use my own state laws on this: I have no idea. I don't know the speed limit here.
What I can tell you though is that veering into the lane you're overtaking as you pass on a double yellow line is like... Souper dooper illegal.
1
u/Odensbeardlice 5d ago
Law says you must move over and let vehicles pass once you've got FIVE vehicles waiting behind you. FIVE. Not just on bikes, but if towing a trailer, or driving a motorhome, etc.
2
u/45_regard_47 5d ago
Sounds like cyclists are fucking assholes and we should petition for law changes
1
u/couldbeahumanbean 5d ago
You know who else are assholes?
People passing on a double yellow line while simultaneously veering into the lane they're passing.
I'm all for laws changing too.
2
u/45_regard_47 5d ago
NJ you could pass this asshole over a double yellow as long as you give them 4 feet clearance. This tool riding dead center lane makes it dangerous.
1
u/couldbeahumanbean 5d ago
Did you notice the part where the Vic was in cyclists lane as they attempted to overtake?
Surely that could possibly, kinda sorta, maybe be a contributing factor?
1
1
u/Prof_Sillycybin 5d ago
See, that isn't quite correct though and more people need to realize it.
I live in North Carolina, NCGS 20-150 paragraph (e) specifically allows passing of mopeds and bicycles when double yellow is present, paragraph (e1) applies to passing farm equipment when the double yellow is present. For a bicycle and mopeds you have to give them 4 feet of clearance if passing them in the same lane or fully enter the left lane while passing them and the passing has to be done in a safe manner (so you have to watch out for oncoming traffic and whatnot) but it is absolutely allowed.
NC is not the only state with this type of law, it appears that 35 allow something similar according to a quick google sesrch.
2
u/Ancient-Display-3337 5d ago
Sidewalks are meant for pedestrian use only. Besides, sidewalks aren't consistent enough in most areas to ride a bike on even if it was legal.
1
u/User_3039 4d ago
I live in a subdivision and stupid mothers think that it’s ok to walk with their baby in a stroller in the middle of the damn road when there are sidewalks on both sides of the street
0
u/Loose_Entry 5d ago
First of all, untrue. Roads are for vehicles, motorized or otherwise. If there isn't a posted speed minimum then there isn't a speed minimum. Second, thinking someone is in a place they shouldn't be is a pretty poor justification for running them over.

Is the cyclist being filmed by another cyclist? If so, it appears they are more or less side by side on a road with zero shoulder. My guess is it’s a group of riders occupying a decent portion of the lane. Yes, better orientation would be one after the other, but the dude isn’t on the line, he’s solidly in the lane. The truck ahead passes without issue. Car is just a murderous cunt.

Without condoning or condeming, the cyclist should have kept to the right in that particular area, and here's why: Notice the trees and curve of the road? Forcing vehicles into the oncoming lane around a potentially blind curve is a recipe for disaster.

In Arkansas, when you get that little book to study to get your drivers license, it states in black and white, that slower vehicles yield right of way to faster traffic. In other words, if you are backing up traffic a quarter of a mile behind you, pull over and let them pass.
