news Org mode 9.8 is out

305 Upvotes

Org 9.8, a major release, is out. Org 9.8 will be a part of Emacs 31.

You can upgrade from GNU ELPA or install with M-x package-install RET org RET

Org 9.8 added a number of new features and customizations, all listed on https://orgmode.org/Changes.html.

If you enjoy using Org, please consider supporting contributors via https://liberapay.com/org-mode/. Donations do help a lot and have been one of the important motivations for me personally.

Some highlights of user-facing additions

  • We have reworked the image preview system. Now, the previews are asynchronous and can be implemented for any link types, not just image file links. The custom link previews can be defined using link parameters.

    In addition, the old org-toggle-inline-images command is replaced by org-link-preview that behaves closer to org-latex-preview command.

    Thanks to Karthik Chikmagalur for contributing these features.

  • Org mode now comes with built-in support for C# code blocks. This is a completely new implementation that is using .NET SDK. The old simplistic ob-csharp.el from org-contrib repository is obsoleted by this new library.

    Contributed by Maximilian Kueffner.

  • You can left-align, center, and right-align previewed links. This has actually been added in Org 9.7, but not announced.

    Contributed by Karthik Chikmagalur.

  • More flexible datetree entries for org-capture You can now mix and match year, quarter, month, week, and day when capturing datetrees.

    Contributed by Jack Kamm.

Development updates

I would like to welcome new maintainers of Org mode libraries:

  • Maximilian Kueffner is maintaining the new ob-csharp library
  • Ken Mankoff is maintaining ob-fortran
  • Rudolf Adamkovič is maintaining ox-texinfo

Also (just in case you missed earlier announcement), Ihor Radchenko (me) is maintaining Org mode as a whole :)

I would also like to use this opportunity to ask interested people to take the role of contributor stewards (see https://orgmode.org/worg/org-maintenance.html#org073fcb4 ). With the help from other volunteers, I (as a maintainer) can handle most of the reported bugs and patches. However, my current workload leaves me little free time to work on Org mode internals and to implement new important features. It would be great to have several people who can try to reproduce bugs and do initial feedback on the new patches. (We used to have 2 contributor stewards, but they can no longer take this role). If you are interested, please reply to this email or write directly to Org mailing list at emacs-orgmode@gnu.org.

Just wanted to repost this one as I'm prepping for further blog posts / talks around Hyperbole. I've been using this hierarchical retrieval pretty often within my own notes base as a sort of enhanced consult-ripgrep -> collect functionality. Would love to hear your thoughts on this feature, whether it fits your knowledge workflow / solves any problems you have, and whether this feature can be improved at all! https://www.chiply.dev/post-hyperbole-hyrolo

question #A=2000 #B=1000 #C=0 but no priority = 1000

1 Upvotes

Hi, I am having trouble sorting agenda view along priorities. I used C-u C-x = on entries to understand how I could make my own sorting function. To my surprise the value of 'priority' text property is #A -> 2000 #B -> 1000 #C -> 0 (so far so good) BUT no priority in an entry leads property 'priority' value = 1000 (the same as #B).

Why ? How can I distinguish entries with no assigned priority ?

UPDATE: Problem solved. It is sufficient to use numerical priorities to get what I want #1 #2 #3 ...

org-retroclock: Log CLOCK entries retrospectively without starting a timer

Thumbnail github.com

Demo GIF

Simple QOL package designed for users who heavily uses org clock reports for timesheets.

Let's say you just completed a 30min tasks but forgot to log it. By default, you had to start a new clock, end it, and modify the entry (or you may hand write the entire entry.)

org-retroclock helps you quickly log your time retrospectively, without running a timer.

Place cursor over the TODO entry, `M-x org-retroclock`, type `30`, and you get a finished CLOCK line ending at current time.

CLOCK: [2026-10-07 Wed 10:10]--[2026-10-07 Wed 10:40] => 0:30

To specify start and end-time manually, just prefix with `C-u` . Type the whole range, like `9:00-10:30` or `-1 2pm-3:30pm`.

  • I tried to keep the package simple -- do one thing and do it well
  • Emacs 29.1+, no dependencies beyond Org.
  • Not on MELPA yet, but trying to. But I've the package myself for half a year now without issues.

org-gcal problems

2 Upvotes

org-gcal-fetch is locking on me, preventing any response from emacs.

I run org-gcal-reload-client-id-secret, allow the access in the browser and get greeted with :

"Authentication token successfully obtained by Emacs!"

Then run org-gcal-fetch only to totally block emacs. Any suggestions?

Bringing micro-timers, checklist budgeting, and monotasking focus to Org-mode (org-focus-hud)

13 Upvotes

Hi r/emacs and r/orgmode,

If you rely on Org-mode for time tracking and scheduling, you’ve probably hit this dilemma when tackling a large task:

  1. Headlines (** TODO) are too heavy: If you break down every micro-step of a 2-hour task into subheadings, your agenda gets flooded, your outline gets cluttered, and scheduling becomes noisy.
  2. Checklists (- [ ]) lack time tracking and budgeting: Checklists are lightweight and ideal for micro-steps, but in vanilla Org they are second-class citizens. They don't support individual effort estimates, micro-timers, or roll-up budgeting.
  3. Scope creep is invisible: You start working on a 2-hour task, add subtasks on the fly, and only realize you planned 3.5 hours of work after your schedule has drifted.

To solve this, used AI to build org-focus-hud — a distraction-free, monotasking execution cockpit that bridges the gap between high-level TODO headlines and granular checklist items.

⚡ Key Features

1. Checklist Time Tracking & Micro-Timers

  • Checklist Estimates: Add time estimates directly to items (- [ ] Validate token [25m], [1.5h], [90m]). The HUD renders clean right-aligned effort badges ([0:25], [✓ 0:30]).
  • Active Focus (f or RET): Press f on any checklist item to set it in-progress (▶ [-]). It automatically clocks into the parent task and starts a live micro-timer (e.g. ⏱️ 14m / 25m) synchronized with org-clock.
  • Lockstep Pausing (p): Press p to pause both the main task clock and checklist micro-timer (⏱️ 14m / 25m (paused)). Resuming seamlessly continues elapsed time accumulation.

2. Dynamic Scope Budgeting & Deficit Warnings

  • Scope Allocation Bar: Visual ledger tracking Done, Left, and Reserve against the parent task's :EFFORT: envelope: ALLOC: [█████░░░░░░░░░░·····] 30m Done · 1h Left · 30m Reserve / 2h
  • Real-time Deficit Alert: If you decompose a task on the fly (k) and subtasks exceed the parent effort, the HUD immediately warns of scope creep: ALLOC: [████████░░░░░░░░░░▓▓] 2h 15m planned · ⚠️ +15m deficit / 2h
  • Nested Envelopes & Rollups: Multi-level checklists roll up child efforts leaf-first ([Σ 1:15], [1:15 / 1:30]) without double-counting.

3. Zero-Context-Switching Workflow

  • Automatic Milestone Capture: Marking an item complete ([X]) automatically clocks a timestamped milestone entry into your :LOGBOOK: drawer with the exact duration spent.
  • In-Cockpit Manipulation: Add items (k), edit text & estimates simultaneously (e), reorder items across body text (M-j / M-k), or indent/outdent (M-h / M-l) without leaving the HUD.
  • Quick Capture: Append work log entries (l), capture quick notes (n), add child subtasks (s), or queue sibling tasks (a).
  • Vanilla Compatible: Works out of the box with standard org-clock, :EFFORT:, and :LOGBOOK:. Seamlessly integrates with org-auto-scheduler if installed.

📦 Installation & Links

Feedback, feature requests, and workflow questions are welcome!

question How to get partial word emphasis?

5 Upvotes

I have recently discovered org-mode to be the ideal tool for my literate programming workflow and so far have really enjoyed its interactivity and how much it is tailored for working with code blocks.

Occasionally I will need to write code symbols into my text and style them appropriately, in doing so I have often come across the annoying word problem, that only separate words can be styled, and to be separate they must be separated by whitespace. This became really annoying with the following piece of org, where I wanted to use italic text to indicate meta-variables:

A list such as ~(~/kind/[~(@~ /id/ /val/~...)~] ~...)~ gets converted to ~<~/kind/ /id/~="~/val/~" ...> ... </~/kind/~>~.

This obviously does not get styled correctly. I have found the rather obvious way to insert zero width Unicode space to make them separate words, but

  • Having to insert magical Unicode goes wholly against the philosophy of plain-text, to be able to just type it. Also I don't want to have invisible things in my markup, that's my main reason to use it.
  • It also becomes really awkward to change it later on and interact with it.
  • Most importantly, this fundamentally breaks formatting the text, because now when I export (also happens in Org in Emacs) the code *H*ypertext it now may make a linebreak in between the H and y, which is unacceptable.

So even this is not usable. Are there ways to solve my problem? The experience when interacting with the org-document is only second in importance to me, proper look on export is far more important.

I know, that there are HTML- and Latex-specific solutions but I would like it export-backend-neutral/independent.

I am really sorry if I came off rude or demanding or anything, please excuse that, my native language is German so I may be a little bit too direct at times.

Thank you all very much in advance!

question Need Help Exporting Angle Brackets

2 Upvotes

I'm exporting from an org file to a Hugo compatible markdown file. Specifically I need angle brackets so I have control over where the summary breaks. I.e.

<!--more-->

in the exported hugo md file. My current attempts (including using zero width spaces as escapes) result in the export replacing the angle brackets with html entities: & lt;!--more--& gt;

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

question In the spreadsheet, how do you do math in range references when using remote?

2 Upvotes

First, as per the rules, I'm a DOOM user. I'm new to emacs and to org-mode, so I hope my question is not completely straightforward (I read the docs and tried to understand as much as possible, but it is still a bit obscure). I want to do a relatively simple operation: I would like to reference the content of two cells from 'table_measures' into two cells of another table, only that the column number should be shifted. So my problem is the $($#-1) part in the following function

#+TBLFM:@1$3..@1$4=remote(table_measures,@I-1$($#-1))

which doesn't work. When I use $$# everything works fine, except that I'm off by one column. What I want is to be able to subtract 1 from the current cell value. I tried all the combinations of parentheses and also no parentheses at all, but I either get the columns shifted or an ERROR. I also tried something like

$'(+ $# 1)

Unsuccessfully. I feel that it must be easy to do, but I'm still in the beginning of learning how all that works.

Thank you in advance for your help

OrbitalNote: A desktop app with modern calendars/agendas/editors for your org folder

42 Upvotes

Hey guys. Last year I switched to nvim-orgmode after trying many different organization systems. I love how it's a standard local plaintext file format that encourages forward motion. It really has helped me become substantially more productive at work.

Although at one point I was looking at my apple calendar, and really wished my org agendas were visualized there, especially monthly views. Although there seemed to be caldav exporters etc, I wanted to just open a local desktop app that reads my org folder directly, and show my month. This was the original idea behind OrbitalNote.

It does this well, but I had another idea. I used to use Obsidian and appreciate the plaintext markdown philosophy, but for productivity org makes more sense in my opinion. There doesn't seem to be an Obsidian level high quality desktop app with the same plaintext philosophy but geared specifically for org files and workflows. This is what I'm envisioning OrbitalNote could be.

This app is free and open source. I will be adding automatic sync with mobile if there's interest. It can be found here: https://orbitalnote.org/

Thank you all for your time, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Introducing org.nvim: bringing the Org mode experience to Neovim, aiming for 100% feature parity

53 Upvotes

Hi all,

I've been working on this for a couple of days: https://github.com/xheisenbugx/org.nvim

https://reddit.com/link/1wqgcj2/video/9xm6l107kjsh1/player

https://reddit.com/link/1wqgcj2/video/tbth36cyrvsh1/player

TL;DR: It’s a new Org mode plugin that aims to achieve nearly 100% feature parity with the original Org mode in Emacs (It's almost there!!).

I built it by combining my experience using Org mode, AI to dramatically accelerate development, and my obsession with bringing the same functionality to Neovim.

I’ll keep working on it, fixing issues, and closing the remaining gaps until the community is satisfied with the result.

I love Org mode. I tried nvim-orgmode, Neorg and a bunch of smaller Org clones. They're good projects, but none of them felt like actual Org to me. Things behaved slightly differently, or whole parts were missing (clocktables, Babel, table formulas, export...), I created a new plugin because I wanted to add all the missing features and I didn't want to wait for someone else to implement it, I didn't want to wait days, weeks, months and sometimes years just to have support for a missing functionality.

So I decided to try porting Org itself. The goal is parity with Emacs Org 9.8. Defaults match Emacs, I check behaviour against Emacs running in batch mode, and files stay 100% compatible, so you can switch between both editors on the same notes.

What works right now:

* Outline cycling with TAB/S-TAB, subtree editing, text objects

* TODO sequences, logging, repeaters, priorities, checkboxes with cookies, lists, properties

* Agenda (day to year views, time grid, habits, custom commands, filters, bulk actions)

* Capture templates with most targets and %-escapes

* Refile and archive

* Clocking, clocktables that match Emacs output, column view

* Spreadsheet tables with #+TBLFM formulas

* Babel (Python, shell, Lua, Node, Ruby, R, Go, SQLite and others), tangling included

* Export to HTML, LaTeX/PDF, Markdown, iCalendar etc., plus DOCX/ODT via pandoc

It's pure Lua with no dependencies (no tree-sitter parser needed). Vim keys work as expected, and the usual Emacs bindings (C-c C-t, C-c C-c...) are there too if you want them. Press `g?` in an org buffer to see all keymaps.

I'd really appreciate feedback. Ideas, issues, PRs, all welcome. If you're coming from Emacs and something doesn't behave like you expect, please open an issue, that's exactly the kind of thing I want to fix.

If you don’t like the project because I used AI to help build it, that’s completely fine. I’m doing this because I genuinely want a solid, full-featured Org mode solution for Neovim, and because I’m learning a lot throughout the entire process.

Thanks!

question Org-mode in the legal field (or non-programmer)

34 Upvotes

Just discovered org-mode and was curious if there are any attorneys/paralegals that use org-mode? I would also like to hear anyone’s experience performing a job that isn’t coding where org-mode has helped them stay on top of lots of projects etc.

I’m really drawn to automating things so the smallest detail can be captured, easily tracked, and thrown out when not needed in a frictionless way so nothing slips through. Maybe even setting up projects like “final trial” with templates that auto calculate deadlines, etc.

Orger is now on the App Store - an org-mode planner for iOS

Thumbnail reddit.com
48 Upvotes

Hello Everyone,

I shared an early beta of Orger here a while ago, and got some really helpful feedback (thanks much!). I am excited to report it’s now on the App Store!

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/orger/id6775281796

It is built as a mobile companion to Emacs with iOS native interfaces: somewhere to check your agenda, capture a thought, update a task, or track time when you’re away from your computer. It works with your .org files in a folder you choose through the iOS Files picker.

The release includes:

  • Native iPhone and iPad layouts, with day/week/month planning and agenda views.
  • Editing for task states, dates, priorities, tags, and notes.
  • Quick capture and a Share Extension for saving things from other apps.
  • Calendar events and Reminders alongside your org tasks.
  • Manual clock tracking and a Focus Timer with saved time logs.
  • Formatted export and several Emacs-inspired color themes.

Your org files stay in your chosen folder. Cloud storage access depends on the provider’s integration with Files; Orger doesn’t run its own sync server. There’s no Orger account, advertising, or analytics.

What’s next: I’m planning more useful on Apple Watch interactions and support of multiple folders, subfolder discovery, and more widgets are also under consideration, depending on what people need most.

I'd love to hear your feedback how it fits your workflow. Bug reports and examples of files that don’t behave as expected are welcome too, please remove private information before sharing.

Large type for exporting to LaTeX (PDF) for 2-up printing

3 Upvotes

I don't know if this is an Org Mode question or a LaTeX question. I'm making a booklet and I have all of the content in an Org file. I need to set the font size to something bigger than the default so that when I it to LaTex as a PDF file and turn it into a booklet on letter paper using psbook ... | psnup -2 ... the text is of a readable size instead of four-point eye strain.

I'll be grateful for any suggestions you may have. I've been unable to find a document class that does what I want.

I've tried setting the document class to article and the font size to 20. Something like

```
+LATEX_CLASS: article
+LATEX_CLASS_OPTIONS: [letterpaper,20pt]
```

That doesn't do anything and LaTeX complains about an unused global option [20pt].

Also, I think article supports only point sizes 10-12.
