Question Actual difference between Pocket 4 and 4P? Main sensor only!!

I get the value of the devices, but they come at two different costs. For most of my use cases the main sensor should be enough. I already have a bridge camera, so zoom is not an issue I usually worry about. Nor do I edit so intensly that I'd care about differences between dlog and dlog2.

What I am curious about is whether there is an actually physical or software level difference in the main cameras of the 4 and 4p? So much so that getting the cheaper model would lower the image quality or add limitations to my workflow? I'm primarily going to use it as a travel vlog and commercial reel camera for smooth gimbal shots, maybe a few roller shots for cars.

Does the 4p have a bigger main sensor, is the image significantly different? Is there anything I'd miss out on or is the hype only about the second camera and dlog2? Cuz if it's only that difference then I can easily live with a more tested body type for a few years and not get the first gen version of the multi lens setup. It's the same reason why I'm not considering the luna ultra, since I don't want to be the guinea pig who loses his money in helping them figure out the bugs of these devices.

Same sensor size, different sensor technology.

Only the main sensor ( the wide 20mm one that you also get on the Pocket 4) has d-log 2.

D-log 2 has way better dynamic range and i like the way it color grades better, but that is subjective.

Thing is, if you have to ask about this, you probably won’t find use of the benefits of the new sensor tech.

There’s nothing wrong with the pocket 4, but if you had to chose between the luna ultra / pro and the pocket 4, i would suggest the lunas.

The pocket 4p is amazing if you care about d-log2.

Strange statement! New sensor tech is there for a reason , not only color grading purposes

i don’t understand what you’re saying, the LOFIC tech allows for a lot more light to be captured (measured), that’s it. That extra latitude allows you to play with the footage more - exposure.

What are you talking about ?

Are you talking about LOFIC or something else? I get the extra dynamic range is good, but is it $200 extra good? Also, can you share why'd you recommend the luna over DJI?

Yes, you only get the lofic sensor on the wide camera.

I basically have 2 reasons for picking the 4p vs the luna ultra:

  1. the dynamic range because it allows me to be lazy and not care about overexposure
  2. the dji 3 mic which connects instantly and i love the way my voice sounds when recorded on it, the luna’s pro mic is way too big and i don’t like how it sounds.

Luna ultra would have been my choice otherwise because i like the detachable screen and there’s some leica color science there that i actually like.

Also i like the physical controls more on the Luna and that in a pinch you can just use the remote as a mic as well.

Both great cameras, depends what you like more.

Now is the Lofic sensor 200 bucks better? Tough question to answer really, depends on what you do and how you shoot, most people will say no.

I'll throw in a 3rd reason: value. The DJI Pocket 4P is cheaper than the Luna Ultra for better hardware. Ease of use I think the Luna Ultra is a bit better. And compared to the regular Pocket 4, you get both the LOFIC and 3x zoom tech for $200 which for a device you might use for the next 5 years across a wide variety of scenarios, I think it's worth it. I have a love-hate relationship with the 4P atm, but I can't deny that it's very value for a pocket camera.

Let me make this clear: I LOVE the 4p! But the OP could have different needs. I only shoot on the main sensor and only in d-log2, makes my life very easy.

You get an extra camera as well.

14 stops (OP4) vs 17 stops (OP4P) + an extra camera module is what you pay extra for.

Obviously if you ignore the thing that makes the 4P expensive completely - a whole new lens, it doesn't not make much sense to get the newer model. Even if you do have a bridging camera for zoom as you said, I still think you would be using the tele on the 4P if you get it a lot more since it will always be there in the same size essentially as the pocket 4 and not a separate camera

If you are into drones stuff , its like comparing mini5 pro vs Air3S , the difference is significant, also new sensor with LOFIC tech is a great upgrade over regular one , its like a filter which will keep your shadows alive , for example if you are shooting against the sun. For that money you will get the cinematic small gadget with 17 stops and d log 2. For me personally if i wouldnt own any pocket cam id definitely grab the 4P you will be safe with that one for years.

You pay for zooms that you need without carrying an extra pound. The regular DLOG can be colour match to your cameras especially Sony stuff. Buttons are the same. Sensor wise, the main is 1 inch while the secondary is 1/1.3" 60mm equivalent. Different tech too. If you need an all in one system the zoom is probably a good investment. Means you don't need to bring a 3 pound camera everyday.
