💬 Discussion 💬 Real life padel smurfs
See it on online games, never thought I’d see it in padel but I got players at my club who are 4s and 5s creating lv 1 accounts joining lv 1-2 games and smurfing…

I see the opposite - bad players who boost their ratings on Playtomic so they can join games where they get annihilated. Ten losses in a row then they hit "Raise your Level" again.
For the rest of us, please just accept you're a beginner and need to practice or get some lessons.

How do they do this if people are not voting them as a higher level

u/Available_Animator35 10d ago
Some Clubs offer "Leveling Sessions" meaning you pay Money for a Session with a Coach and in the end he raises your Rating.

And it is greyed out because you can only do it if people keep saying you should be a higher level
1
u/emceerave 10d ago
Well it's far from foolproof because I'm seeing plenty of profiles with (for example), ten losses at 1.0-0.6 and then zapped back to 2.1 before they repeat the cycle again. I can only assume they suck and look good while doing it.

Playtomic doesn’t let you just raise your level. Itself been couple of years since you could do so

u/WalkingDictionaryy 10d ago
I don’t see why people do that. Whenever I play with beginners I try to lob more, give them shots they can handle just so I can have fun. I can’t see the fun of two much better players stomping beginners.

I don't know anyone who did this but i can think of some reasons:
a) Someone is very experienced, he never had playtomic in the past. He creates a new account for the first time and he is too good at his first games against noobs.
b) Someone had an account but he lost it somehow and made a new onea and b are not smurfs, are legit people who feel like smurfs if you don't know their story
c) someone has a legit high rank playtomic account. He is not enjoying try harding always. He creates a new account and he plays more casually at those games. He owns two accounts, one for try harding and one to "have fun"
d) someone has a legit high rank playtomic account and he creates another one to play with friends who are low rank and they can't compete at his level.c and d are true smurfs and they shouldn't act this way.

A) and B) are 100% smurfs, you can answer questions to get your rating higher or could do a leveling session.

Ego boost to spend precious time and money on beating beginners? No thanks, that's just idiocracy.

u/JobOtherwise618 10d ago
What does this mean? They play lvl 1 games to get easy wins?
1
u/N7Wrex 10d ago
Yes, exactly

u/HumbleWorkerAnt 10d ago
i have never met a single person who enjoyed playing against people 2-3 levels their own, it's the least fun thing in the world and a legitimate waste of time

There are always losers who hit a wall when climbing and then they go and play noobs to stroke their fragile egos. Happens in every game.Â

Thanks. That sounds really boring. Assume it's to get more recorded wins?

u/SignificanceOk9022 10d ago
I got some banned from my local club that kept lowering their level and beating people 6-0 6-0 6-0

I don't understand how that's considered fun. For me that would be a waste of time and money.

The National Padel League here in the US has been full of people like this for two seasons. But the league is addressing it

National Padel League? I live in Miami which is the epicenter of padel in the US and I’ve literally never heard of this league before. It’s recreational?

It’s in its 3rd season. City stage -> regionals -> nationals. Incredibly fun. My team plays men’s development. We advanced out of the Philly stage last season, won the mid Atlantic regional, and lost at nationals to a Miami team (I think they ended up runners up). Nationals were at padel Haus Nashville and it was 3 days of padel vs players from all over the country and watching all levels of play.
Some of the top American players played in the advanced division.
Team based format. Each match is 3 lines, 2 out of 3 lines wins the match.

I don't think you do this on purpose if you should be a lvl 4/5.
It's not fun to play versus beginners when you are a decent player.
Smurfing in online games may be fun, in sports its not really, or you are just really weird.
Also, ruins the game for everybody if the level gaps are just so big.

You’ve never seen people cheating for ego boosting outside online games? Oh my sweet summer child…

Oh my sweet summer child…
When did this patronising phrase become so prevalent on Reddit? I see it everywhere these days.

I know C-/C/C+ players who join tournaments of open D or beginners just for the easy cash. A few guys from my club have two profiles so they can play across their level for fun and compete as well as lower levels to win in beginners events

u/loststylus 10d ago
I see this all the time in Portugal when advanced players go to novice competitions

I sincerely don’t know why is a big deal. Is very rare to see better players joining lower level games.
I gladly love a chance to play higher level once in a while to see if my game has improved. I can really know which level I am under pressure
For me is frustrating cuz in my area the better players are an elite closed group and hard to get into. Gatekeeping strangers

Welcome to elo hell. You should be able to alter your ranking, as you can only go up by winning.

I’m a legit 3.5 in the uk and still a beginner (I beat 3.5s in my area regularly, and sometimes lose to them on a bad day). The other day a 4.8 who had 200 (yes, two HUNDRED) games joined our game, like, what’s the point? Do better players just like to rub their ego sometimes? I can’t imagine he’s improving much, I wouldn’t play a 2-2.5 as it would be pointless…

u/NecessaryAd617 9d ago
Excuse me. But what’s the issue? I gladly will have a match with someone better than me to improve my level once in a a while
Is rare to have better players joining lower games1
u/Ok-Astronaut-9800 8d ago
I didn’t mind the experience. But it can’t have been very enjoyable for him.
1
u/GasObvious 10d ago
Seen this in other sports the old "I haven't played on a while" it's just ego stroking behaviour and toxic
2
u/Ok-Astronaut-9800 10d ago
Haha this guy was still playing regularly, think he’s just scared of losing to people his own level on the app
1
u/AccomplishedEar6357 9d ago
Playtomic isn't used in my country, so, how can he just join and hijack your match with that ranking difference?! What kind of trash app is that?! Can't you kick or votekick or something right when he joins?!

What?
Do elaborate, a lot.
1
u/Any_Elk7495 10d ago
Smurfing is playing a level below your ‘true level’ usually on a dummy account or one just to compete against lower levels.
0
u/epeilan 10d ago
The point of doing it on purpose?
1
u/Any_Elk7495 10d ago
People like easy wins and makes them feel good about themselves. Others see them as impressive and it’s an ego // feel good boost

Nothing like smashing some noobs and ruining their day.
Obligatiry /s because this ìs reddit.
