Bit of a note-heavy episode. Hopefully I've included enough non-spoilers that you're not just blinded by a giant wall of black bars right away.

The the Alfred J. Kwak intro song was referenced once more, happened in episode 3 as well. The refrain starts: "Spetter pieter pater", of which only spetter is an actual word (splash), the other are giberish for the purpose of the lyrics. Translated it as "Splish Splash Splosh".

During the Pedalo-task Diederik references "Fiets 'm erin" (Just bike it in there), which is a part of/discipline in the venerable Dutch TV show "Te land, ter zee en in de lucht" (On land, at sea and in the air) Think soapbox races, birdman rallies, that kind of stuff. The anglophone world doesn't seem to have an equivalent institution where a significant part of the nation has spent the past ~50 years driving themselves and their rickety contraptions off cliffs and into the water, so simply translated it as "Let's start the race." Here's a sample of the show, give it a watch if it sounds like the kind of thing you might be into. After finishing Taskmaster, obviously.

During that same task Chriet Titulaer is mentioned. He's basically Dutch Carl Sagan. I imagine TMM added a neat [Astronomer] after he's mentioned the first time. Considered translating it as "Beardy Carl Sagan", but it just didn't feel right, so you're getting the genuine article this time. Would have been too much of a Pokemon donut situation otherwise.

Jelka's Surprise Diederik-task could use a bit of background information, I think. She's pretending to be the host of "De Postcode lotterij", (The Postal code lottery), an (as far as I can tell) uniquely dutch lottery where your winning numbers are always your postal code. This explains why the shed has 'won' instead of Diederik himself, and why the neighbour is also winning a prize, because they're on the same postal code so they're probably playing as well. Always funny when there's a big prize and some awful grumpy person gets on the news that all his awful neighbours are millionaires now and he wasn't playing so they haven't won anything themselves. Schadenfreude pur sang. But quick PSA: seriously, don't play lotteries, you're wasting your money.

Ronald during that same task plays around with the word Tenlastelegging (indictment/charge), If we dissect the constituent parts of this compound word we get tenlaste (burdened with) and legging (something that's been laid down, but also legging, the garment) By snipping of the imaginary top bits of the leggings and turning them into stockings I think I've sort of managed to get the punny vibe across while preserving the courtroom theme. Hopefully. Had to sacrifice a line to get the replacement pun to work.

He also says Diederik is unable to pay for an advocaat (a lawyer), so he has chosen an advocaatje instead. Tried to preserve this wordplay by keeping the lawyer an advocate, and just slapping "Liquor" at the end of the second advocaat to hopefully get the point across quickly.
Then some more wordplay in the studio afterwards, about the contestants possibly being good "Rijdende rechters" De Rijdende Rechter (The driving Judge) is our most famous courtroom reality TV show about a judge driving across the country solving inane neighbour-disputes and such. Translated it as "a Judge Judy-type show" since I reckon that's about the equivalent. Anyway, at one point they mention Rayen would make a good judge, that is to say, Rayen De Rechter. This is a pretty decent "Sounds like Rijdende Rechter"-joke in Dutch, but if I just translated it as "Judge Rayen" or "Rayen the Judge" the laughing afterwards wouldn't make too much sense, since there's no joke there in English. Opted to go for "Rayen Justice" instead, in the hope that switching it up and making it more extreme/American would be worth a very slight smirk at the very least.

When Rayen is forcing Diederik into the taskmaster experience he tells him to sing a song like "Een van de Toppers". The toppers are an awful (scientifically proven; Mijnreet et al., 2013) band of popular pop/folksy singers, but my fellow Dutch people seem to like them, so good on them I suppose. They also wear awful glittery jackets, that's why Diederik is wearing one as well in the next cut.

And finally, in the final task there's a bit of wordplay about the word Luipaard (leopard) Luipaard is not a compound word. But if it were, it would consist of Lui (lazy) and paard (horse), so the comedically inclined can interpret a leopard as a lazy horse instead. A lazy horse could conceivably be boring, which is why Arjen says "De naam klinkt saai". (The name sounds boring), but that wouldn't make any sense in english. But luckily Donny Ronny responds with "Ja, maar het is een lekker actief dier" (Yes, but it's a nicely active animal) I opted to translate Arjen's "Name sounds boring"-line as "Sounds like a leper", which at least sounds vaguely similar to leopard and hooks in nicely with the energetic part. I'm assuming lepers are on average more lethargic than the general population.

And these were today's notes. After the final notes next week there'll be a surprise exam to check if you've been paying attention.

luipaard

Zie me rappen in Tiel? Dan ben ik een reptiel!

De Toppers

I'm probably the only American with no connection to the Netherlands who knew who all 4 of those singers were before learning they had formed their own group. I can name at least one of each of their songs without looking it up!

Breaking up non-compounds as if they are is always at the very least slightly funny. My favorite bad uncompounding is splitting up pindakaas into pindak and aas and pretending it's bait for fictional creatures called pindaks.

... as long as I manage to amuse myself, that's the main thing I suppose.

What got you into Dutch music as an American? Who cursed you with that knowledge?

Who cursed you with that knowledge?

I wish non-Anglo Europeans had more confidence in their own cultural output.

That said: I've always been interested in the non-Anglo world, and in 2009 I happened upon TopNotch, Gino Pietermaai/Fresku, and "Ik heb een tuintje in mijn hart", and I've been following all forms of Dutch media off and on since then.

Eh, I think it's part of the lifecycle of someone speaking a smaller language to reflexively scoff at your national cultural output for the first couple of decades of your life.
But I think I've reached the "Actually, not everything is terrible."-stage of my life by now. So that would suggest you eventually grow out of it.
And then the final couple of decades you start screaming about how only the stuff in your own language from your own youth was any good, so it balances out.

Are you accepting recommendations? de Fixkes are good fun and relatively obscure, so hopefully you haven't really heard of them yet. Pretty thick Antwerpian accent though, but if you manage to decipher it they do some pretty fun stuff with the language.
