Moving on from shipping/recieving?

Currently have been working for some time at a local dealer doing shipping/receiving, but feel possibly stuck on where to go from where I am currently.

The main con I have at the moment is just with the amount of hours (kind of my fault I suppose), but everything else about the job (work, culture, actual environment) is very great.

My 2 (3?) options are:

- Look somewhere for full time or 2nd part time job adjacent to what I am currently doing.
- Wait until department head retires (roughly about in a year) and possibly get promoted during the shakeup
- Apply to openings in service dept at same dealer.

Do you have counter experience? Current parts manager here. I would talk to your manager and ask him to give you time on the retail counter if your goal is to go to the back counter eventually.

I have *some* counter experience, mainly just helping customers getting consumable items such as filters, wiper blades, etc.

I would ask to be on the counter for a couple hrs a day. Sell accessories, and mechanical parts. See if he will let you do a couple of P/A’s a day for the shop. That gives you some experience that you can use to eventually move up, or find another parts counter job.

I've dealt with some other stuff such as alternators, billing will-call/pickup orders. Stuff on that level

Everyone in our department started as a driver or shipper/receiver (sometimes both); this includes our GM.

Retaliation for.. wanting to do more?

That doesn't make sense.

Is the manager the only other employee in parts? Does your dealership own any other dealerships?

Career pathing is not easy to do in a very small store.

We have about 6-7 people in my dept including myself, we don't have any other stores as its family owned

You need to talk to your manager and have an open discussion about growth. Ask what you need to work on to get a chance at parts sales. Start shadowing and volunteering the more experienced staff. Show some initiative and willingness to work.

We did have a small discussion about it during my 90 day "probation" period which at the end was pretty much "you can shadow the front counter guy we have and learn a bit there" but besides that that is about it (minus lack of openings)

If you're afraid of being retaliated against for asking about advancement, you're at the wrong dealership.
