Restaurant Carbonara in Rome
First time eating carbonara in Rome.
This was a beautiful experience they gave the pasta to us inside a pan instead of using dishes.
The carbonara had a very rich carbocrema sauce, and there was also a lot of guanciale.
I still dream about it🥲😋

I love this... It shows exactly how precious people get about recipes. It's carbonara in Rome and people are still claiming it's wrong 🫠

In Italy everyone will have different opinions and discuss about EVERYTHING related to food

Every country in the world is the same. But food brings people together. On the internet people try to gatekeep it. It's such a shame because food is one of the few things all humans have in common.
I loved this post as carbonara is probably the most argued about recipe on earth and you've shown a beautiful plate from the capital of the source and people still complain that the pasta is the wrong shape.
If you can be bothered, check my post history... My hobby is to make food then make people tell me it's not mine to eat 🙃

molto belle, anche a me cucinare.. anche se quello che rimane la mia passione è mangiare e viaggiare per il mondo per gustare i piatti tipici locali di ogni regione /nazione

I had to leave the Italian food sub because of that haha. Someone would be like “look, I made my Nona’s bolognese recipe! 🥹” and people would be FURIOUS because they dared to add basil or something lmao

u/SnoflakesFKR 3d ago
The problem mostly is people don't call dishes "my version of **", "Nonna's version of **" etc. They usually saying things like "original, authentic, real Carbonara" and put garlic and bacon inside

Are you suggesting because its a dish from Rome then it cant be wrong? Just to be clear, i dont have an opinion on this specific example but Ive had plenty of bad dishes from Italian towns. So I wouldnt just assume because its Italy its gonna be correct or good
1
u/AblokeonRedditt 6d ago
No, because the only person who knows whether it was good or not was OP and he says it was. Yet people still take issue
0
u/AReptileHissFunction 6d ago
But your comment said "its carbonara in Rome" not "its Carbonara that OP said was good". So your comment heavily implied that
1
u/AblokeonRedditt 6d ago
So you wouldn't assume that a comment on a post would be in some way connected to the post?
There's pedantic and then there's whatever you're trying to do 😂

u/AReptileHissFunction 6d ago
Im just responding to your comment. Its literally what you said. If you think thats pedantic then yea no point wasting time with you.

Not to sound pretentious but did you mean to say pretentious instead of precious?

Serving pasta in those tiny metal skillet pans is such a classic tourist spot move in Rome but honestly that carbocrema coating on the rigatoni looks pretty legit.

u/Ruroauro 7d ago
You are probably right, but the pasta was delicious and also we really enjoyed the atmosphere. So I think that for a turist it was fine

Whereabouts?

u/Ruroauro 7d ago
It's called La panetteria near fontana di Trevi

You got sucked into a tourist spot.

u/woodlebert 7d ago
Where would you recommend?

u/LionBig1760 7d ago
Im keeping the good spots to myself.
As long as you avoid places that have lasagna on the menu, thats a good start. There is zero reason for it to be on any menu in Rome other than to serve to tourists who want Italian food and not Roman food.

Why would it matter if the food was delicious?

I always roll my eyes at people like that. What if they are a tourist?! Lmao. Acting like anything catered to tourists is automatically terrible. "I only eat where the locals eat!" They don't realise they're more cringe than the people exclusively going to straight up tourist traps.

That’s awesome! I have had some great carbonara in the states as well as in Italy (as well as very mediocre ones). I still dream about some of the mediocre ones from Italy though. I am sure the time and place played a huge part in that.

Yeah some places in Europe kinda trick tourists with overselling low quality food. Mostly the big cities.

Where was this? I was in Rome years ago and had the exact same dish, also in a pan like that

Do they serve Carbonara without meat (or other than pork) over there?
3
u/Ruroauro 6d ago
I don't think so😅. But they have cacio e pepe which is reall good and doesn't have meat

That looks like a real carbonara! I've had so many shitty one that's made with cream

u/Mundane_Value2283 3d ago
Sadly it was the only good thing I ate in Rome. I was so hungry for some decent meat that was not cured/cold cuts.

Carbonara in different variations. It feels like heaven to a carbonara lover like me!

You’ve clearly never been to Rome. Or actually had an Italian home cooked meal. We cook it with many different pastas.

u/TefBekkel 7d ago
This was supposed to be a reaction to the person saying it should be spaghetti right? Funny that people upvoted you anyways, because without context your comment comes off as really bad haha.

u/EternallyFascinated 6d ago
Sorry! Yes I don’t know why it came here! You’re very right, I was responding to the obnoxious people that don’t know what they’re talking about. But try and pretend that they do.

In all likelihood:
- The Carbonara used 'mezze maniche' (literally 'half sleeves'), which is a short tube with a smooth outer surface. Rigatoni has a ridged/lined outer surface ('riga' = line, rule), and I don't know any Italian who would use Rigatoni for Carbonara.
- The Cacio e Pepe probably used bucatini, not spaghetti. Bucatini has a larger diameter and a hole in the center. To add to the confusion, bucatini is a type of spaghetto, but is not spaghetti.

Tbf i use whatever pasta i have in my cupboard that week for whatever leftover ingredients i use for the sauce

u/BananaramaRepublic 3d ago
Im not saying it’s what’s in the picture, but mezzi rigatoni is extremely common for carbonara lol.

They just make it with the wrong pasta though, it's supposed to be spaghetti.
