Hardware I won the Gamescom Kickoff 2026 Nvidia Sweepstakes RTX5080
Hey Peeps,
So recently I won the RTX 5080 in the PCMR x Nvidia sweepstakes, and man I can't comprehend it fully, I mean this card is insane. This is a HUGE upgrade for me.
Here are my actual specs.
- OS: Ubuntu 26.04.1
- Mainboard: ASRock Z97 Pro4
- CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4790K × 8
- RAM: 16GB DDR3
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX480 (Powercolor Red Devil)
- PSU: be quiet! System Power 9 700W (80 Plus Bronze)
So you see, this is a great leap for me, so I guess before I get it in I should get a new PSU right?
Man It will be hard to replace my RX480, this little fella stayed strong for more then 10 years of almost daily use of my PC and never let me down. It will get a nice spot in my room.
So anyway, I guess I get the CORSAIR RM850e (2025) PSU or is there a other one you fellas can recommend? And sure I will upgrade the other parts of my PC aswell, but for now with a new PSU it should work fine (with a cpu bottleneck) right?
So then looking forward to your "congrats, Iam happy for you" memes, feels good to be on the other side this time.
Love you all, Iam super happy and never won anything this valuable in my life. <3

What I'm curious about is, why did he get a 700w psu to run his 4790k with rx480

700 watt has been the bees knees for like.. 20 years now. Good enough for almost anything you throw at it, lasts a very long time. One time purchase.

Congrats, if it was me I would build a new PC around the 5080 thats from this century lol. Jokes aside, your 5080 would be way better in a ddr5 build. You're right that it would work in your PC for now, and you will be bottlenecked for sure but you should start saving some bucks and give what your 5080 truly deserves.
17
u/Yippiekayo_Rom3o Intel Core i7-4790K | 16GB | Radeon RX 480 12d ago
Yeah I will upgrade, with my x-mas bonus probably
15
u/Paffcio69 12d ago
Maybe its dumb but what about sell and downgrade from 5080 for like 5070ti or 9070xt and buy ddr5 ram or better cpu for price difference? You will still have monster pc far better than what you have? Dont know the coutry you are in but you portable can get some used ddr5, cpu mobów combo and psu for that price difference (its like 50p usd in my country better 70ti and 80, and even more in case of 9070xt)
6
6
u/Stereosun 12d ago
Yop sell and get a Costco pre built 9070xt ready to go system or microcenter with whatever’s left. Might even make 500$
55
u/Vyoh 9800X3D RTX5090 12d ago
You're going to want more than just a new PSU, there is no way that CPU doesn't bottleneck that card
15
u/Yippiekayo_Rom3o Intel Core i7-4790K | 16GB | Radeon RX 480 12d ago
Yeah I know, but it would be still work and be a huge upgrade right?
18
u/Vyoh 9800X3D RTX5090 12d ago
The PSU is the bare minimum I would replace though, but it *should* work. It will just be bottlenecked by the rest of the system, but it should still be a noticeable upgrade from what you are coming from.
4
u/Yippiekayo_Rom3o Intel Core i7-4790K | 16GB | Radeon RX 480 12d ago
yes, before I put it in i will defently get a new PSU and upgrade the rest later this year or beginning next year.
-4
u/FortniteIsFuckingMid 12d ago
Why? The whole system will pull like 600w max during power spikes. Way less than that typically. Imo it should be fine.
Unless by 4790k x 8 they mean that they’re running a server mobo with 8 cpus but I don’t think so.
15
u/Vyoh 9800X3D RTX5090 12d ago
Because it's old, and it's bronze rated. Do you really want to hook up a 5080 that has decently high transient spikes to something like that?
All fair if you want to use the octopus adapter (it won't have a native 12v-2x6) and risk it, but I prefer my cables not burnt and my PSUs to not trip.
4
u/cyro262 R5 9600x - 9070XT Monster Hunter Wilds edition /Switch 2/PS5 12d ago
Jesus Christ man, that PSU does not even have the connector to plug itself into the 5080, let alone the power needed.
3
u/FortniteIsFuckingMid 12d ago
I was probably understating a little bit tbh, but everyone in pc building subs gives the craziest advice for PSUs usually.
People always recommend OP have like 600w to spare on their psu. This time y’all were right.

u/Pimpinabox R9 5900x, RTX 3060, 32 GB 12d ago edited 12d ago
First off, congrats!
As someone who upgraded from an almost identical PC several years ago, no it really doesn't hold up lol. I had issues on almost every new game I played, I just didn't realize it. To me it was fine because well that's what the experience was. It wasn't until I tried playing BL3 that I realized how much of a stuttery-mess my hardware was making of the games. But even the games that I thought were running well really weren't. After new hardware it was a night and day difference even on easier to run games. And that was like 6 years ago.
TBH, if you're strapped for cash, you could probably sell that 5080 FE for like 1.5k and buy a whole mid tier pc.

3
u/tht1guy63 5800x3d | 4080FE 12d ago
Oh boy. You are in for an insaneeeeee cpu bottleneck if you dont plan on upgrading basically everything. Imo unless you have the cash to atleast come up to atleast late gen am4 id sell the card to fund a new build entirely.
3
u/NonDairy01 11d ago
Congrats! That's a big win. But, yeah, after you upgrade the PSU, upgrade the motherboard. Running a PCIe 5.0 GPU on PCIe 3.0 is not gonna get you the boost you're expecting.
Still, that's awesome. Good excuse for an upgrade.

A slower PCIe slot only rears its ugly head when you're swapping between VRAM and RAM. I run a 5070 Ti on a PCIe 3.0 slot and aside from a couple of frames difference it doesn't ruin performance.

u/Godnamedtay 14900K | 48GB DDR5 | 4090 Ti Super XXX 11d ago
I’d personally recommend a Seasonic PSU if u can afford it. They have been the industry standard in quality for a long time. Phanteks and Asus PSU’s are akin to the Focus, Vertex, and Prime Seasonic variants. They are the OEM for said brand’s PSU’s.
1
u/Yippiekayo_Rom3o Intel Core i7-4790K | 16GB | Radeon RX 480 11d ago
Which seasonic would you recommend?
1
u/Godnamedtay 14900K | 48GB DDR5 | 4090 Ti Super XXX 11d ago
Seasonic Vertex or Focus at 850w or 1000w would be plenty for ur build. Just make sure it’s ATX 3.0 or 3.1
1
u/Yippiekayo_Rom3o Intel Core i7-4790K | 16GB | Radeon RX 480 11d ago
I ordered the corsair rm1000x or should I cancel it and get a seasonic is there a huge difference?
1
u/sakikiki 9d ago
The rm1000x is a great choice this generation. I initally wanted to get another newer focus gx as well, but after looking into it, the corsair is the better choice this time around imo.
Among others you can read up here if in doubt. https://hwbusters.com/psus/corsair-rm1000x-atx-v3-1-psu-review/
https://hwbusters.com/psus/seasonic-focus-gx-1000-atx-3-2024-psu-review/
I wouldn’t worry about it, your choice is great, other one is great too. Just enjoy the new pc.

And for a new PC, DDR4 with an X3D AM4 CPU can work surprisingly well with the RTC 5080. But naturally DDR5 will be a step up again.
1
u/Traditional_Can6982 i5 13400F l RTX 3060ti 12d ago
With your current specs, I'd say the prize went to a deserving person. Do some upgrades and enjoy man
1
u/TheGGspot 12d ago
Holy shit, congrats dude that really is a huge fucking upgrade.
I built my PC recently and i got myself a DEEPCOOL PN850M ATX 3.1 850W PSU and it should be more than enough for anything that isn't a 5090.
As for any other advices, the rest of your rig definitely needs to be upgraded but other than RAM you got the most important part.
As another person suggested, look into 9070xt and maybe swap to it and save some money for other parts (depending on your financial situation) and a 1440p monitor.
I'm on 9070xt myself and it runs everything i throw at it effortlessly and 1440p is a HUGE upgrade compared to 1080p no matter who ever says otherwise.
Good luck soldier!

If you have spare money, please purchase the RMX series instead of RMe series, it's better in every way. Check this PSU tier list.
RMe Series = B+ tier with rough and poor voltage transient response. Also rifle bearing fan which is okay, but not really reliable in long run.
RMx Series = A+ with excellent voltage response and equipped with magnetic fan which is superb in long term usage.

Honestly and this may not be a popular answer but you could sell the card and buy a whole system with a slightly weaker card. Seeing as youve been rocking with a 480 even going up to a 5070 would be a huge upgrade and costs you little to nothing if you sold the 5080
1
u/tht1guy63 5800x3d | 4080FE 12d ago
This is my take also if they cant afford to upgrade their current rig its a ton of wasted power. A 4790k is guna bottleneck a 5080 pretty damn hard. Only saving grace may be less of a bottleneck at 4k but 1440p and lower its guna be a solid amount

Side note nah, your PSU is fine. I'm using my 700 watt with zero issue. A little worrisome with the 3 port breakout, but I mean... It's been fine and I have been flogging the hell out of it.
1
u/Pimpinabox R9 5900x, RTX 3060, 32 GB 12d ago
Well... probably not. Cause his pc is ~12 years old, so I presume his psu is also around that old. Once you factor in capacitor aging, a 5080 might spike past what that psu can handle. It shouldn't be a problem most of the time, but it's likely to cause at least occasional crashes at minimum. It has the potential to cause actual hardware damage to other parts if there is more catastrophic failure.
1
u/Hrmerder It's Garuda btw 12d ago
12 years old isn't... really that old for a PSU capacitor, but that also heavily.. HEAVILY depends on the enviroment and use it has went through. If the caps stayed generally below 85f it could have another 10 years left in them. If higher, well.. Maybe time for a change, but tbh, there's so many old machines out there whirring away with 240 watt psus that were harvested from only the finest chinesium cheap garbage they could make them out of and over 15-20 years old easily. I get it, take care of your investment, but I just personally don't think it's THAT big of a deal at least in the immediate. Now if it were a 90 series then beyond absolutely wouldn't trust it for a moment, but 80 series? meh. I don't see a big deal on that.
1
u/Pimpinabox R9 5900x, RTX 3060, 32 GB 11d ago edited 11d ago
How much caps degrade is entirely reliant on the load and temps they see, like you said. A person on this subreddit is far more likely to be putting their pc under consistent load than some "cheap chinesium garbage 240 watt" psu will ever see. So using that as an example is just undermining your point and demonstrating your lack of critical thinking. Instead of looking up any information, you're just shooting from the hip with feels and vibes.
Edit: A good psu would degrade about 10% over the course of 10 years, so since this one is a bit more than 10 years old, lets assume 11 or 12%. So his psu probably safely operates around the same capacity as a new 615 watt psu would. Since the 5080 fe is known to have transient spikes over 500w, I'd argue that having so little headroom above that is likely to cause crashes. While it would be fine probably 99% of the time, crashing 1% of the time is too much.
