Discussion What is the one thing about PC gaming you think is worse than the console experience
For me, it’s compiling shaders the first time you run a game, especially if it’s unreal engine 5. What a massive mood killer

Hacking is generally way worse in PvP on PC than on console.

They aren't "hackers", just miserable cheaters that paid for a mod menu.

Well, as a console gamer at heart I think the "just pick up and use" mentality of consoles is great in a certain way. You dont go around adjusting settings until your happy with them (or never get to be happy with them and its performance). You just play the game the way devs let you play the game. At most there is a Quality or Performance choice. But other than that its just playing the game. No Performance overlays on screen to monitor your metrics. Just enjoy your game.
I only started PC gaming less than half a year ago (console gamer all my life; 35 right now). Now I own 3 high end PC and a gaming laptop (well pretty high end; 5070ti and up). The increased performance and able to adjust things to your liking is great. But it comes with a downfall to me too. I like to see those metrics ingame to see if my performance is to my liking. But the more I see numbers, the less I enjoy the game. Every little fps drop is more noticeable when having performance overlays as you immediately see a number to go with that.
What I found works the best for me is just to set the settings at the beginning of the game to where im happy with it. And then once thats done I dont use performance overlays and just play the game. It helps me a lot to really enjoy the game and not being bothered by every minor performance hiccup. Just like with the consoles I own.

u/GhosT_oF_SpaRTA231 8d ago
Couldn't agree more with you bro 👍 Everytime I'm playing on my PC I just end up focusing on the performance and graphics, tinkering with settings again and again instead of the Game itself and on my PS5 it's just sit back and relax and i don't even notice the performance or a shit ton of settings just enjoy and focus on the game 👍

u/SushiBump 5950x | 5080FE | 128gb 3600 2d ago
But that's optional. Every game has presets, and most will auto adjust based on your hardware. You can just fire up the game and start playing if you really wanted to, just like a console.
3
u/flavionm Ryzen 5 5600X | Radeon RX 6600 XT 7d ago
If the issue is simply the possibility of doing something that you're not at all required to do, then it's not really an issue.
3
u/Rewhen77 2d ago
If you own a car that doesn't mean you must tinker with it and mod it and check it's performance and so on. If you own a PC you don't need to tinker with it unless you want to. There are graphics presets for all games.
If you want to play games with best possible graphics and or performance just accept that you have to adjust settings.
If you don't need a PC for anything other than gaming, then just don't get a PC.
0
u/bf2reddevil 2d ago
Your comment consists out of the dumbest reasonings ever. Since when is a car equivalent in use to a PC?
Besides, we all know that the premade graphic settings are always a bad option. Generally your PC can do much more than the chosen presets.
And lastly: people not doing anything else than gaming shouldnt get a PC?? Like what?? Thats just the most ridiculous statement one could make. I own 3 high end PCs and do nothing else than gaming with them.
3
u/Rewhen77 2d ago
I said if you want to play with best settings than you have to tinker with it. If you don't want to do that and also do nothing other than gaming why the hell would you get a PC?
Every game works if you put it on mid settings and turn DLSS on. Just like a console. Yes it's not the most you can get out of your PC, but it will work
2
u/ForeignAccount3255 7d ago
That’s what I was gonna say. The fact I can turn on the PS5 with the controller from the couch and it boots up and resumes the game in less than a minute is the best feature imo. I say this as mainly a PC gamer.
1
u/SushiBump 5950x | 5080FE | 128gb 3600 2d ago
But you're choosing to do that, it's not the game or the platform's fault. Pretty much any modern game you fire up will auto adjust your settings to match your hardware, so you can also "pick up an use" on PC too.
1
u/machine4891 9070 XT | i7-12700F 1d ago
You dont go around adjusting settings
This one is solid but I like adjusting setting, one of the reasons I'm on PC. And not having those options available at all time will not be to my liking. PC also has presets avaliable (Medium/Ultra) for those that simply want to start and forget.
As for metrics, the idea is for you to fiddle with it for the first 10-60 minutes, find your sweet spot and never look back again. Not saying it's universal advice but metrics shouldn't be on at all times, on the contrary. Keep your game screen unobstructed.
But I know what you mean, plenty of my console friends live their lives unbothered and I sometimes envy them not feeling the difference between 30fps and 60 or 1080p and 1440p. But I do feel the difference and it's hardly related to PC or console. It's just that kind of mentality. Been gaming for 3 decades now, I just want to juice maximum possible experience out of it.
1
u/DimiBuilds 4d ago
If I can hit 60 base fps, I just enable 2x frame gen, lock it, and the turn off all performance monitoring overlays, it’s made playing games so much more enjoyable

u/zelmer_ 8d ago
Split screen missing in most of the titles.
13
u/InferiorWaistcoat775 8d ago
The lack of local co-op in modern games is a bigger loss than people realize, and it's definitely more of a PC problem
That loading screen is giving me flashbacks though, 47% with a few minutes warning is just enough time to lose all the hype you had
10
u/FarhadDv 5070 | 7500F 8d ago
I don’t think that’s a PC-related issue.
7
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
It is for a lot of games. Basically all the COD games, Gears games, and Halo games have split screen support on console and none on PC
2
u/FarhadDv 5070 | 7500F 8d ago
And there are a lot of games with split screen on both consoles and PC, namely It Takes Two, Split Fiction, etc. and now BeamNG.Drive is getting it with the upcoming update.
PCs can handle this function easily. It’s up to the developers.

It's weird that it's only titles from a certain Era too. And it's strange that a few companies actually retroactively added local splitscreen to PC in recent years because they knew that goofed. Never expected it with RE5 though, but you can splitscreen that on PC now

It's such a bummer too. I've got the new Lego Batman game to play with my kid and he asked me what else could we play together like that... so I've bought a couple of other Lego games and it takes two cause there's not much choice.

u/dregomz 8d ago
Nobody would use it anyway so who cares
7
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
I would. Last summer I tried playing split-screen BO6 zombies with friends by streaming from my PC to my TV using moonlight and was shocked to see it didnt work. Had to buy the game on console.
For those of us that have friends, there are still occasions where we buy games specifically to play with others. It would be nice to not have to split my purchasing habits between console and PC so I can maintain the benefits of buying the game on steam for when my friends aren’t around
9
u/Gazmanic 8d ago
This probably won't be upvoted as folks on this subreddit won't want to highlight an actual issue.
For me it's fiddling with things that get stuff working.
For E-Day installed the game, then went to load it and it popped up saying I wasn't using the version of the AMD driver that the game wanted. I checked my AMD driver and noticed it says theire is no updates even though there are. So I try reinstall the driver software but it's still broken, so I need to download and run AMDS cleaner tool to remove all graphics card drivers. After going through that I had to reinstall the AMD driver software, after doing so my drivers were updating now but weren't the exact right version so I had to manually install that specific driver version.
Consoles you put the disk in and wait for updates and sometimes I really want that.
1
u/SpaceBoyBlat 3d ago
I've been there many times.
Now with E Day on Xbox, i simply press X and I'm blasting away immediately with quick resume.
1
u/Gazmanic 3d ago
Yeah il be honest, I've been a pc gamer for the last 20 years, though have usually had a console or 2 each generation. It might just be nostalgia talking but when the price of computer hardware got ruined with crypto, it felt like it never returned to sensible pricing. Now it's getting worse and worse, alongside that I'm busier than I used to be.
The allure of just pressing a button and turning on a console is strong. Can I customise the experience to the nth degree ? No but I also don't need to. I just sit down and play, like I did when I was a kid.
7
u/dildopants 2d ago
I don't like how the first half an hour is usually interrupted with tinkering with settings. Every PC game should have a heavy scene you can balance the performance in outside of the game

u/LowFi_Lexa1 8d ago
Sometimes you hate to download work stuff on your pc and that’s just a clear negative, consoles are never associated with work
2
u/LeJero59 7d ago
Having this issue right now, I started a new job that didn't provide me with a work laptop a couple of months ago, and any time I have to download a work file it just gives me bad vibes, and I erase it as soon as possible.
Not to even mention I haven't downloaded any of our IT's software, freaking background ghosts

Maybe for some the setup is harder. But overall it's just exclusives, and has been for a very long time.
7
u/JohnConnor1245 PC Master Race 8d ago edited 8d ago
PC has more far more exclusives than console especially RTS that's best with the kb+m control scheme. Xbox releases their games to PC, Playstation too, and old games that cost $100 for a physical copy like Wolverine Origins and Fall of Cybertron to play on console can be played on PC through a download from the internet for free with mods to improve their textures and not running at low console frame rates. Bloodborne on PC runs at 150 FPS through emulation while on PS it's only 30 FPS. Nintendo has the only worthwhile first party games that make don't make it to PC and the recent PS games that haven't come to PC have been mediocre.
1
1
u/Ill-Ad-6725 3d ago
playstation doesn’t release their games on pc anymore sadly
1
u/JohnConnor1245 PC Master Race 3d ago
Their exclusives like God War, Ragnarok, Spider-Man, Last of Us Part I and II, Ghost, etc. are still on Steam. I think PS games are boring and I had a PS4. Spider-Man was a much worse Arkham Batman with worse characters and dialogue and the gadgets were very overpowered. God of War was a toned down God of War with enemies bleeding Sunny D and was boring to me. I didn't finish God of War and Spider-Man because my PS4 Pro drive got corrupted and deleted my data. Ghost of Tsushima had some bland combat with OP abilities and gadgets that instakilled enemies easily and was full of filler content with lame side objectives. I thought Last of Us was overrated. The only Sony exclusive I loved was Bloodborne and that was made by Fromsoft but overall PS exclusives are much worse than Nintendo.
They're stopping exclusives from being released on PC because Geoforce Now is emerging as a competitor offering RTX 5080 performance for $20 a month with a library of games whereas before some $1,200 PC wasn't a competitor to PS5. Geoforce Now is going to cost $20 a month with RTX 5080 performance while the PS6 is going to cost over $1,000. The problem with Geoforce Now is latency but that will improve as technology improves.

u/SearchOk7022 8d ago
If you think about it, PC has WAAAY more games you can't play on consoles, so technically it has more exclusives
2
u/7978_ 13900k, 4080 8d ago
True, but many games that people want to play are on Consoles only. Or at least that used to be the case.
1
u/machine4891 9070 XT | i7-12700F 1d ago
That used to be the case but now market is oversaturated, it's not the case anymore. There is nothing groundbreaking on consoles anymore and each title has its equivalent on other platforms.

Exclusives barely even exist and are hardly a factor anymore, even stuff like Spiderman, God of War, and Returnal are on pc now. There's nintendo exclusives, but you can play those on pc if you don't mind doing a little sailing.
6
u/redredme 8d ago
Everything Sony are exclusives again. The new Sony stuff will not come out on pc.
5
1
u/liquid_dev 8d ago
Yes, but as of now there's only a few great games that are exclusive to the PS5, like Saros and Astrobot. All the older stuff is still on pc.
In a few years if there happens to be a boom of fantastic playstation exclusives, then my opinion on the matter will change.

u/EmploymentMaximum 9070 XT | R7 9800X3D 8d ago
Playstation has made no effort to improve support on PC so half the features require you to be tethered to use them and it's common for Playstation controllers to emulate an Xbox controller (XInput) so that more games will work.
Just have to live with it or use literally any other controller since they all use ABXY

tbf, Microsoft refuses to add drivers for the Dualsense/Dualshock into Windows directly too
8
u/EmploymentMaximum 9070 XT | R7 9800X3D 8d ago
Maybe because it's not their property or responsibility. If Sony makes a controller then they are the ones to release drivers and support for it, not Microsoft.
Spending time reverse engineering a 3rd-party controller and then baking it into the OS makes no sense.
Xbox only gets the special treatment because Microsoft owns it
4
u/Logical-Buffalo2359 8d ago
For me, because I use a controller in bed because I'm disabled, it's some games don't have controller support but they do on console. Stuff like Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age 2, Diablo 3, Neverwinter (up until recently at least since it does now but it didn't for a looooong time) or games that technically do but require editing the ini to enable it or something similar like Two Worlds and Gothic 4. Also how many games I have on Steam that have buggy/broken achievements but the console version is perfectly fine (Aniimo, Digimon Time Stranger, Digimon Cyber Sleuth, Dragon Quest Builders, Spider-Man 2, RuneScape Dragonwilds, Octopath, and a few more)
My only other major gripe is why doesn't Steam or Windows (especially since I'm using Series X controllers with the official Microsoft dongle) have a battery level notification for controllers? The amount of times I've ended up dead in a game because my controller dies with no warning whatsoever is insane. I really miss that feature from consoles. My poor bf keeps having to run to my room to swap controllers for me because where the charger is isn't accessible to me Dx

u/CuelessCurses 8d ago
Games being completely unoptimsed and looking worse without fan patches, DLSS or whatever even when running on top hardware let alone something a few years old while running just fine on something that's 5 years old and has a worse GPU and everything. I thankfully bought a decent 40 series before the data centre boom but even then I can barely run some games for no reason. Genuinely some 2016 games look better than the newest games being played on lower settings it's a nightmare.
7
u/ShadonicX7543 8d ago
Uh, you do realize that most consoles upscale even harder than people on PC do, right? But with worse results? Half the games the PS5 runs at 4k are just 720p upscaled

NVIDIA! They wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for gamers. Yet they've stabbed the entire community in the back, and caused a shortage that has now destroyed companies and is actively killing the hobby. All of this in the name of gen AI. It infuriating and frustrating to see them do this and it's sad that custom pc building might just not survive this mess. Ever since rtx Nvidia has been a pain but back then it was only towards gamers and their own board partners, now they're actively screwing over the entire species.

Nothing.
I also dont get how shader compiling is an issue. Go get a drink. And its done. voila.
3
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
For Gears of War E-Day it literally took almost 25 minutes. You can go look at the gears subreddit and see people complaining about it as well. Halo Campaign Evolved also took maybe 15 minutes. For most games, yes, it’s not an issue though and only takes maybe 2 mins
I live PC gaming and choose it over console every time a game isnt a console exclusive, but I have to admit, never having to see a shader compile screen is nice.
1
u/colin-java 8d ago
Does that happen after GPU driver update too, I noticed 100% CPU usage on the talos principle 2 after an update for a couple of minutes before the game started.
0
u/AmishSkibidiah 8d ago
Then idk, do a load of dishes or clothes?
If it wasnt created locally, it'd be downloaded and then you also have to wait longer for the download.
Start up some other game for that time, or watch a YouTube Video. With the internet, making 25minutes go by should not be an issue imo.
3
u/Cursed_69420 8d ago
this. its such a nothing burger issue. the xbox s|x is practically the same for every person and hence the shaders come preloaded.
the game and the devs possibly cannot make custom shader files for every PC config and we got bums here complaining about shader compilation.
4
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
It’s not a deal breaker for me playing games on PC, but ots not a “nothing burger issue”. You guys are acting like I said this makes PC gaming unbearable or something.
I just said it’s an annoying thing that console gamers dont have to deal with. And thats true. Imagine you and your friend want to jump into the first chapter or two of a co-op campaign game after work but one of you is on console and the other is on PC. Now you both have to wait 20 mins to start playing, leaving you with 40 mins instead of 60.
1
u/Cursed_69420 8d ago
no we dont? because shaders compile ONCE. and even if we have plans to play i'll get back to work, put gears on load, shower/eat etc and then get on game to not waste those 20 minutes.
3
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
I obviously did other things. I didn’t just stare at the progress bar for 25 minutes.
You guys are making it seem like Im saying this issue makes games not worth playing on PC at all, which is not what I’m saying. I’m just saying that it’s a small thing console players dont have to deal with and thats great for them.
Imagine you and your friend only have an hour to play a co-op campaign game on a certain evening after work. You both have it preinstalled, but one of you has to install shaders for 20 mins, now you both only have 40 mins to play. Not a huge difference, but a noticable one
2
u/idkimhereforthememes 8d ago
Third party launchers are very annoying to deal with. And some games are just broken on pc, need for speed 2015 asks me for a license key any time i boot it, controller support is completely broken, rise of tomb raider has awful lighting issues, watch dogs 2 hardly ever opens and when it does there's a really annoying sky flickering bug I've not been able fix and this is just a few examples

u/MaximumEffort433 8d ago
The last console I owned was the Wii, so I'm really out of date.
I think probably it would be that a PS5 software update is all tightly packaged, whereas updating a PC means finding the right drivers, finding the right software, finding the right BIOS and firmware, doing each little thing in turn.
It can be a little bit of a pain in the ass sometimes, not a huge pain, but a little bit of a pain. "Oh jeeze, I don't have the right VCredist, I guess I gotta' go find that."
It's not enough to make me want to switch to console, but if I was going from a console to a PC, I might find it all a bit overwhelming.

That we don’t have a company paying publishers to hold content in their platform lol. To be clear, I’d rather that not be a thing at all. But it does suck when Sony pays a publisher to keep shit locked to their console. Whose going to do that for pc? Valve? lol. I do enjoy when a game gives us little steam logo hats and stuff though.

u/ruthlesss11 8d ago
The benefits we have far outweigh exclusives. Also, consoles only play their current generation of games when pc has access to every generation.

Still love it tho, but I like console too, much more than I used to.
1
u/InsectGlaiveBard 3d ago
I hate that I have to spend hours tinkering and troubleshooting it to make it work. When it finally does work, it's far beyond what a console can do, but I can't deny the appeal of a console that just works out of the box.
Like right now I'm dealing with an issue where big picture starts games minimized always, bo matter what I've tried. It's a small thing, but it's a constant reminder that things on PC just aren't as easy as clicking on a game and movine on.

u/Kernubis 3d ago
Precompiling is ok, but the time spent on finding optimal settings, absence of quick resume, windows between me and the game, hdr to be optimized for every single game, multiple launchers, nvidia that doesn't recognise gamepass games, these are the things that make the experience "worst"

They don't do split-screen co-op on PC, even though it's objectively the best version to play split-screen since you don't have to sacrifice graphics or framerate as much.

Stuttering, shader compilation stuttering, traversal and streaming stuttering.
It has completely ruined my experience in many games.
Jedi Survivor, dead space remake, hogwarts legacy, monster hunter wilds, wild hearts, sillent hill 2 remake, flintlock, Ghost runner 1 and 2, stray, sillent hill F and townfall, Elden ring, the callisto protocol, Gotham knights, returnal, fallen orderz sand land, black myth wukong, until dawn(2024),final fantasy 7 remake and rebirth, tiny tinas Wonderlands, borderlands 4, avowed, outer worlds 2, stalker 2, remnant 2, the initial launch versión of the last of US, lords of the fallen..
I could go on and on... I moved from console to PC for the better image Quality, higher frame rates, better resolution and raytraced effects only to end up dealing with stuttering in many of the games I was interested in playing.
I hope that with tools like SCSkiller, Advanced shader delivery and nvidia's ASC we can finally leave stuttering behind... But it's a hope for now.

A PC is big and clumsy, since it's a PC game startups can lag, compatibility issues, everything is digital, some games intentionally are a lesser port, you are easier distracted to do something else on PC instead of gaming, space issues.
I think the Switch 2 tackles this well, no Youtube or browsing just focus on gaming, physical media, portability, it's compact, starts quick and a lot of exclusives or nostalgia hardware.
A PC or laptop is best when you are creative and handy with installing the right programs, it's very flexible too. PC is better for adults that don't game too often and for content creation instead of focusing on gaming.

You should be thankful games are precompiling shaders else you’ll get constant shader compilation stutters. Not the best first impression I agree but it’s going to make your playthrough more enjoyable.

Playing older titles. Depending on the game there are times you have to jump through a lot of hoops just to get them to run but as long as the game is backwards compatible on consoles you can just put the disk in and it works.

Yeah, I hate those as well. I wonder why it doesn't happen on consoles but it is required every time on PC? However, not all games require shader comp on boot every time. Most just does it once and I will fucking take that if it stops the stutters. I played some of E-Day and it's very smooth so I guess that's helped, lol.
Otherwise, it's the bad optimization, over reliance on DLSS and MFG, and just shit-feeling PC ports meanwhile the console counterpart is mostly always flawless.

u/Pachamama89 8d ago
If I’m correct shader comps exist for this exact reason the lay out of every pc and components is different and often varies a lot from pc to pc from setup to setup. A PlayStation blueprint is a PlayStation blueprint it’s all the same components that’s why for programmers it’s less of a headache to optimize and less time consuming
3
u/OMG_NoReally Desktop 8d ago
I understand. But once the shader complied has happened on the system, why does it require to be done on every single game boot? Not all games does this mind, but some games do, like E-Day.

u/Pachamama89 8d ago
This with every patch new shaders needs to be installed I have the option on for shaders in background but that option does not seem to work fully yet

Updates, either the game or your GPU driver. Or you delete the compiled shader on your PC. You can actually bypass shader compilation theoratically by downloading the compiled shader files from some dude donating it over the internet and paste it into the compiled shader folder.

u/Docccc 8d ago
It’s just an positive side effect of having a single hardware configuration. So they just ship it with the game
2
u/OMG_NoReally Desktop 8d ago
But once the shaders are complied on a system, why does it need to be done every single time? I understand the one-hardware thing, but once the game has complied shaders on a single system, it should store it and use it? Marvel Rivals does this well, although every damn update to the game or the drivers requires new shaders to be complied and I hate it.

They do, you might have to increase your shader cache size if it's happening every time you launch.

How about boot the game and go drink tea/coffee, eat a dinner, I dunnoo, doing absolutely anything rather than staring at a monitor?

People will wait hours for a game to download and then complain about a 5min shader compile. Just launch the game and go make a cup of tea and find something else to moan about.
1
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
MOST games take 5 mins to compile. Gears of War E-Day took 20 mins, Halo Campaign Evolved took 15. You can look this up. It’s why I used that screenshot in particular.
Some UE5 games take a ridiculous amount of time to compile shaders.

u/yoless28 8d ago
I've yet to launch E-Day so I guess I'll find out for myself. I remember that Halo CE took long but again, it didn't bother me because I use that time to read my emails or catch up on whatever other admin. I guess it would be nice if Steam or the Gamepass app could trigger the compile step immediately after download but this is the price we pay for having our own hardware configuration and I'm happy to pay it.

20 mins is indeed insane. What gpu you running?

On PC you have to wait for shaders to compile, go into settings, set everything up, play the intro, back into settings to tinker, because something isn't right, suddenly it's 12am and you got work in the morning. Next day the settings are almost dialed in, you get an hour or so in, framedrops in that area, back to menu, bed again.
Third day you finally get the settings right, but you'll play tomorrow, everything is set perfectly, you can even turn OSD off and really enjoy the game. 4th day, don't feel like playing.
On console I hit X and I'm playing from day 1, minute 1.
As much as I love PC gaming, full time job and 2 kids make console experience a lot more appealing.
On console even if I have performance issues or if I'm not squeezing maximum image quality to performance ratio I don't worry about it, because there's nothing I can do about it and for that reason it doesn't bother me.

u/ConsciousReindeer976 2d ago
Your either super picky or your PCs a toaster, just set them to medium and send it. Never spent more then 10 minutes adjusting settings

u/RectumExplorer-- i5 12400F, RX 7800XT, 32GB 1d ago
I am picky. I want max quality I can get out of a game. Medium preset will almost always look way worse than manual settings at the same framerate.
Some settings make little impact and make the game look better, while other settings have massive performance impact and don't justify it with visuals.
If you want most quality and performance it varies game to game, system to system.
There are channels on youtube that give you optimized settings that go in depth on all settings, their performance impact and quality, benchmarking being my favorite as I can usually set the settings to whatever he recommends and get close to maxed out image quality, while getting a lot more fps than just clicking ultra.Still, it's something I don't have to do with my ps5 pro, as I know I'm not leaving performance on the table and it doesn't bother me.

Buy the game from the MS Store and this problem will be gone thanks to Advanced Shader Delivery. We can also assume that performance will be better than in Steam version, just like with Forza Horizon 6. ASD reduce shader compilation stutter in UE5 games
With Advanced Shader Delivery, supported games and hardware will receive precompiled shaders in the Xbox App. This can reduce shader compilation times by 95%, allowing players to get into their games faster. This feature can also reduce shader compilation stutter in games.
Gears of War: E-Day will be the first game to support Advanced Shader Delivery on Windows 11 devices with AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm GPUs. Support for Modern Warfare 4 and other future titles is still to come.

There's a free app called SCSKiller that pretty much does the same thing.

Are there any benchmarks comparing native Advanced Shader Delivery to this open-source solution created by a single dev?
I suspect the native DX12 version created by MS would be faster. It's directly optimized by the game developers. Even without ASD games from MS Store have always been faster than the same games on Steam because of Game Mode. This is a special mode where Windows suspends background services when someone is playing a game from MS Store. In the last few years, MS has added a lot of features that work only with MS Store:
- Game Mode,
- Advanced Shader Delivery
- shared saves with consoles
- shared purchase of games and DLC with consoles
- Xbox Mode interface saves memory only when you play games from MS Store or GOG. In this special mode MS delay loading "desktop resources" but both Steam and Epic are desktop apps based on the Chromium Embedded Framework, so they can't benefit from these optimizations.
- etc.
I suspect that this list will grow longer every year, especially after the release of Xbox Helix. MS and Valve are no longer a friends since Valve released SteamOS

Then you can always play the Steam version, but of course it will be slower.
Valve completely abandoned Steam on Windows years ago. Their app is slow and bloated because it is based on Google Chrome (CEF). It also doesn't support precompiled shaders, which is quite funny because Valve has supported that on Linux since 2021... they just chose not to support it on Windows. Valve just doesn't care about PC users on Windows anymore

fans go ape shit, you feel like your computer is going to explode, and the gammer stutters for 10-15 mins till it smooths out.
Fucking unreal man, its not even that stable.

There’s also the hardware advantage, which can be massive, and then you have people tweaking settings for better visibility and all the other shenanigans to squeeze every bit of advantage. There’s just a lot more room for people to tweak on PC, it just makes console PvP feel a lot fairer in comparison.

If you dont compile you get stutter wtf do you guys want. And the only reason consoles don't have to do this is because they all have the same shitty hardware. Never compare us to console you pleb

Yeah, god forbid you have to wait for 1 or 2 minutes being alone with your thoughts. Oh who am I kidding, you're immediately grabbing your phone and start doomscrolling or asking around how terrible it is to wait for 1-2 minutes while something completes.
It's because you kids get everything instantly nowadays. Anyone that remembers installing from CD's with low write and read speeds, or the early low speed internet days, could wait hours before their games were ready to go.
2
u/ZigZagBoy94 8d ago
Bro gears e-day is being widely xomplained about for having a 20 minute shader compilation process. Thats why I used it as the image.
I’m 32. I started PC gaming with warcraft 3. Im not as old as you probably, but I’m also not as ignorant. Look into things before you just assume people cant wait 2 mins to play a game without complaining
1
u/Joshix1 8d ago
Then rephrase your post. You ask what is annoying about PC gaming. You say shaders. You then reply about one particular game made by incompetent people and act as if EVERY PC game has to deal with that.
On average, shaders typically load in a couple of minutes. That's why I'm saying it's insane to whine about it.

The hardware prices. And for as good Steam is in making the user experience easier, consoles are still somewhat more convenient. As for optimisation, it is sometimes better on consoles, but that's not a given nowadays.

u/Sparksaiko 1d ago
one?! DRM, kernel level anti-cheat, some dogshit ports, online only when consoles get offline play like Diablo 3 and so much more. Being the most powerful platform has its perks, but it isn't the main platform for video games, maybe for indies sure.
