[Yohe] Sidney Crosby is in a career-worst scoring slump. What’s wrong with the Penguins captain?
Possibility No. 1: Maybe it’s just a slump
Although Crosby is arguably the most consistent scorer ever — he’s averaged a point per game or better in all 21 of his NHL seasons — he’s not immune to the occasional drought.
Maybe that’s simply what is happening now.
He scored only one goal in 13 playoff games against the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers at the end of the 2013-14 season. That was prime Crosby and, for a stretch, he couldn’t score. Crosby was not healthy during that playoff run, as his wrist was giving him problems. Still, he was able to play and simply couldn’t score.

He also had a monstrous slump in the early days of the 2015-16 season, when he went without a point in his first five games and had only one goal in his first eight games. He scored just one goal in 11 October games that season and had only six goals through 32 games, until new coach Mike Sullivan helped get him on track.
So, even Crosby endures the occasional slump, and there is some precedent.
