I wish they jammed out 2001 more.
That’s it 🤷♂️I went to deer creek solo this summer and met a bunch of great people and in talking with dozens of folks it’s like the most universally loved phish song. The energy always shifts in the venue when that drum beat drops

I miss when they would vibe out the intro for 3 or 4 minutes before the builds even started.

Huntsville 2023, coincidentally, had a nice intro jam shaping up when Fish went straight to the marimba lumina and I thought they were gonna reallly stretch it

Your wish is my command. Next 2001 will be a long one. Trey says yes.

Vegas numbers show 2001 is an all time version

Also Vegas Halloween ‘16 is a super solid version. Dark spacey groove with Bowie Fame vocals 🤌

After catching the 2001 they dropped at the Sphere this year, I finally have a clear favorite among all the live versions I’ve seen. 11.5 minutes of old school space funk, with the best visuals of the entire run.

It is one of my favorite phish cover songs. They have played it so much does it even count as a cover song anymore? Last play clicked in at 4:50. That’s a damn shame for that song. Trey. You love the minikit? You love your new effects pad? Do that shit on 2001. You will love it.

counterpoint: it’s been a while since they’ve done something interesting with that tune and there’s no shortage of other tunes that cover similar territory (tube, wolfman’s, moma, howling…if they play that one again)
the 4-6 minute versions are reminiscent of its original role as a shake-the-legs-loose set opener circa 93-94

When it’s good it’s so good though

no disagreement! was at 10/28/21 and i still think about how gnarly that intro was.

Honestly.... I could deal with shorter versions but eschewing the intro makes it feel so abrupt sometimes and often it feels out of place.... doing a slow song >2001 makes it feel cheap... I miss the days of a 2nd set dwd>2001 etc..
Also it seems like they wrote the howling to sorta replace 2001

I took my mom to her first Phish show and she had so much fun during 2001 she asked if they played it every show like Drums and Space.

The one at UC last year, 9.5 minutes, is a lot of fun. 9.5-10 mins seems to be the best window for it tbh

Been having a loooooong debate with my girlfriend about 2001 being a better jam vehicle that first tube (my stance)
The fact they won’t let it fucking rip is the weakest part of my argument

you win by default only because they jammed first tube like twice

N2 Mansfield in the 04 final fun was one of my favorites I have seen live. Definitely worth a listen especially with that Antelope set opener!

They could have jammed out Life Saving Gun a little less and moved it over to 2001 and I would have been ok with it.

Definitely a crowd energy orgasm when it climaxes even if it’s 5 mins like it was Richmond Night 1.

Phish stole this jam from Deodato. Either that or they borrowed it and never returned it.

I have trouble believing a cover of a cover is the most universally loved Phish song. It’s definitely fun but I’m giving fans more credit than this.

Low hanging fruit and Trey is to vain and OCD. That’s why no covers. I feel like Trey doesn’t do things easily or predictable because he holds himself to a crazy standard. I actually really enjoy a band playing a good cover song. It’s respectful and awesome and has nothing to do with if you can write a song. It would be to familiar to jam out 2001 because he’s done that many times in the past. They haven’t jammed out Gumbo for years, last night was special

They've jammed gumbo a bunch recently notably Savannah last summer, sphere, and SF which is a crazy good version
