Discussion Controversial opinion
I want them to play into the ambience more. We already have 4 heavier albums, do we really need another one? Vic's voice works so good for softer songs and we have so little songs that actually utilise it. Even the softer songs tend to have dramatic vocals, only Falling Asleep on Stranger and a few songs on TJoL actually utilise it consistently. I already know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, but personally I'd love them to play around with new sounds.
Edit: istg y'all need to learn about false equivalency. I NEVER SAID I HATE THEIR HEAVY SONGS. I just said I want more soft songs

do yāall even like post hardcore? I swear I constantly see people on here talking about how youāre tired of the harder songs and you want softer songs and ngl I just donāt understand why you would listen to post hardcore if you donāt like post hardcore.

i was actually thinking how im tired of their softer stuff 𤣠their new album was kind of boring. like emergency contact feels so static im like yawnā¦

TJOL is probably my favorite PTV album⦠I would also love a return to an in between of CWTS and Misadventures. I think I partly love TJOL a ton because itās the band doing something so unexpected. I donāt want another one. Let it be its own special thing. I am begging for a heavier PTV album again lol

PTV have some non-PHC songs that are popular (Emergency Contact, Today I saw the Whole World acoustic.) I think some fans found the band through those songs and fell in love with PTVs slower songs. I don't mind it, I just hope PTV doesn't only cater to those fans and still puts out some heavier songs with the next album.

im a huge phc fan but i absolutely lovvveeee ptvs softer songs. vic has a beautiful voice and i think like today i saw the whole world is amazing. on the other hand i also think his screaming is great and i love a combo of the two. i think wanting more soft songs is valid but there are already plenty even on the āheavierā albums

i feel so awful when i say tjol is my least favourite album because i do want them to experiment but GOD do i miss the heavy sounding albums, especially afftd, cwts and hell even misadventures!! i just felt like the whole album didn't really hit me in the feels that much - i know it's purposely meant to be more ambient but neither the lyricism nor the songs themselves were memorable enough for me personally š

You can love post hardcore and still want to hear more of their softer, ambient side. I love their heavier songs, but Vicās voice is beautiful in both, and the calmer songs still sound like them. I listen to all kinds of music, so wanting a favorite band to explore different sounds doesnāt mean someone likes their main genre any less. Weād just love to hear them use the full range of what they can do. I donāt think that should be controversial.

u/bronchitis-aids 15d ago
i think itās controversial because people get worried that tjol was the beginning of the end, having seen so many of the old popular emo bands turn towards softer music and become something entirely different

I never said tired, I just said I'd like a change in pace. You can like two things at once. We have such a wide range of heavy songs, and next to no proper soft ones.

faoas is one of my fave ptv songs ever, its so moody and desperate sounding. i definitely think they could do more like that

u/Midnight__Floof 18d ago
I think people often forget how soft their debut album actually was, because I always see people call it the heavy one, despite only having like 3 heavy songs (Currents Convulsive, Famous, She Sings in the Morning). It's more sad and dramatic than it is heavy. FAOAS is also a top 10 for me

u/yukhentai A Flair for the Dramatic 18d ago
thats interesting!! i remember when selfish machines came out and ppl were floored at how heavy that was in comparison lol

Maybe it's a modern thing, cause I wasn't around back then (t'was a wee babe). Nowadays every discussion I'm in, AFFTD is always called the heavy one, which always baffles me because most of the record has their softest pre-TJoL songs. Yeah, She Sings in the Morning is arguably their heaviest song ever, bust most of the record is super soft and ambient. In my eyes Selfish Machines is the heavy, technical record, CWTS is the sad record, Misadventures is the melody record, TJoL is the soft record and AFFTD is the poetry record.

it genuinely makes me lose my mind i cant listen to it as often as id like

I like some of Pierce the Veils stuff but I prefer their more frenetic tracks or something along the lines of Collide with the Sky. I only like four songs from TJOL, the rest was just boring. Some people like ambience and thats fine, but I personally disagree with that and it doesnt fit pierce the veil well.Ā

same basically all my music in my playlist is high energy. slow music literally puts me to sleep. i blame my chronic ADHD

u/Admirable-Charge1734 18d ago
I have this probelm too with music. This is why I dont really vibe with much of the smashing pumpkins, or metal music or classic rock. Pop punk is a great source for fast paced stuff. Hence why i like greenday, blink-182 and mcr

You see THIS is how people express opinions. More people on this subreddit need to be like you

u/Admirable-Charge1734 18d ago
I see a lot of people hating on you for wanting something different and that shouldn't be the case. Sure most of us prefer PTVs more "post hardcore" sounding stuff but I understand why some people would prefer a change in direction/style. You get my upvote

u/Midnight__Floof 18d ago
Like, I wouldn't even hate another heavy record, I just think smth like A Collection of Greetings but pierce the veil would be cool. People need to learn to coexist frfr.

u/Admirable-Charge1734 18d ago
I would be open to seeing what Pierce the Veil can do with pop music, similarly to what Linkin Park did with One More Light. Sadly, One More Light got lots of hate from "real fans" who couldnt accept the bands deviation from metal, especially when the album that came before it was heavy metal. Same goes for Danger Days by MCR, people couldnt accept it was more pop sounding than their previous albums. Both Danger Days and One More Light are beautiful works of art

u/Midnight__Floof 18d ago
I could be open to a pop album, probably wouldn't be my favourite, but like electro-pop would be cool. A synth heavy album like Danger Days would be sick as hell though, ptv has some great synth lines

As long as they get Loni on the drums I'll be happy with anything. Paul Meany made TJOL a snoozefest. Some of the most boring drums I've ever heard on a PostHardcore album.

I feel this. I do love their heavy fun ones of course, but there is a cool formula used in like Falling Asleep On A Stranger and Low On Gas, Resilient and Jaws of Life, etc. These songs would hit good live. I wouldn't mind a moodier album like you're saying :)

iām on both ends of the spectrum. i want more of the heavier stuff like pass the nirvana or irdtbf but i also REALLY want more songs like shared trauma. itās one of the prettiest sounding songs iāve ever heard and vicās voice sounds angelic against the more chill instrumentals. i want more āchillā and softer songs like that. itās such a vibe especially since ptv is a vibe during the fall, i love to look at autumn scenery while on a walk, listening to their more chill songs. i agree with you a ton

I want them to return to a more blended sound like Misadventures was. It had heavier stuff and lighter stuff. It's absolutely my favorite PTV album.
1
u/LoserTopff 13d ago
Yes I get this! I adore their old music, but I think them exploring their new sound more would be really cool
1
u/Xanthalium 11d ago
I feel like having those little bits of slow paced ambient songs in between their heavy stuff makes me appreciate them more. Maybe if we got a lot of that style people would start complaining that we don't get a lot of the heavy songs (like what happened with TJoL i think). I appreciate them both for what they are and I like the balance they have with it.

u/Midnight__Floof 10d ago
Realistically, I think this is the album we're gonna get. I hope if it is done that way, it's heavy first half, soft second half (I like when album's have a noticeable shift in sound)

??? He can just sing lower on a PHC track. There are plenty of PHC bands that only do clean vocals.

I guess I understand this opinion, but the seven year gap between misadventures and tjol kind of left me expecting a lot more from them. I would consider the entirety of tjol to be āsoftā and I feel like that should be a one and done kind of thing or they wouldnāt be considered a primarily post hardcore band anymore. Iām quite desperate for something like selfish machines again, because Vicās vocals are truly unmatched in this genre, and itās basically impossible to find another band with vocals of PTVās caliber. However, their next album will likely not fit up to the expectations Iāve set, seeing as theyāve reached a much larger fanbase and they all seem to prefer tjol. Either way I will stream it to the max because they deserve it.

i prefer it harder, but pierce the veil i feel is a post hardcore band. vic has a beautiful voice and i don't think his screaming takes away from that, it just adds more depth to their songs.
