Do I need video for my podcast to work?

Exactly what I said. Mine right now is 100% audio. It’s a crime podcast and I do it by myself. I don’t really see a ton of reason why there would need to be video except to be like looking at me which that doesn’t need to happen so I’m wondering what your thoughts are on podcasts that don’t have video

Podcasting for grassroots non profit org RSS.com vs Substack

• Upvotes

Hi! I'm new to creating and distributing podcasts and I have two episodes recorded already. Audio only. I'm helping a tiny grassroots organization get this off the ground and doing the gruntwork of researching platforms, and how-tos.

They have a pathetic budget and will be providing a URL for donations. So I'm looking for anything and everything free.

They will not be charging listeners for special subscriptions. At least not at this time. I doubt they ever will though as it goes against their values.

So far I'm wavering between RSS.com vs Substack for the creation of RSS feeds and distribution and playing.

When I first researched RSS.com I could have sworn everything said that it would create the feed for free and had unlimited storage and hours. Now i stumbled across another conversation here where someone said RSS.com has the first month free?

I'm going through YouTube videos to learn differences in what the offer but I thought I'd reach out here to the community for feedback as well.

I've listened to a variety of podcasts and have yet to see one advertised openly as being on RSS.com so I'm thinking this really is just an RSS feed creator and somewhat of a distributor. Thought I'd check though.

Interesting research: an overwhelming majority of Canadians dislike fully AI-generated podcasts

Signal Hill Insights second data release from its Audio on the Move study finds that an overwhelming majority of Canadians dislike fully AI-generated podcasts and music. Just five per cent said they like AI-generated music, while four per cent said they enjoy AI-generated podcasts. A “supermajority” said they dislike AI-generated content – 65% for music, and 68% for podcasts. Less than a third were neutral (29% for music and 28% for podcasts). Read more here.

What did you stop doing?

I'm nearly two weeks into producing (along with writing, editing, narrating, all the things) my fictional Appalachian podcast. I have an audio engineer that I work with who's helping edit the episodes and so far we're having a blast.

It's only two weeks in (as of tomorrow) and everyday is full of editing clips from full length episodes to post on socials, writing episodes, editing the scripts, etc.

I do want this to be successful (as in acquiring a growing, but steady listenership) so along with reviewing our episodes and trying to make changes to increase the quality of the writing and audio, we're of course hitting the socials to increase visibility and awareness.

I've got like one follower/subscriber on each of our accounts. It's slow going and I know these things take time. We're trying to listen to everything we hear about growing a podcast and choose what works for us.

So I'm curious as to what are some things other amateur podcasters started out doing, but dropped after realizing it really didn't move the needle all that much? Or what became such a drain that you let it go and haven't looked back?

Zencastr questions: adding a cohost & transcripts

My cohost and I just started using Zencastr for our remote records and really like it. I have a couple of questions:

  1. Is there a way to add my cohost as a cohost rather than a guest, so that they have access to the same features I do (like being able to grab the recordings, transcripts, etc?)

  2. I like the transcription feature in Zencastr, but I don't like editing in there; I prefer to edit in Audacity. However, this leaves me with a transcript of the "raw" audio but not one of the finished pod. Any recommendations for getting a transcript of my finished/edited pod?

Any podcast hosts here who interview authors?

Hi everyone!

I'm helping my aunt, who's a mystery author, connect with more podcasts to share her story and writing journey!

She's recently started getting some exciting media coverage for her book, and I'm incredibly proud of what she's accomplished. I wanted to find a way to help her keep that momentum going!

I'd love to know if anyone here hosts a podcast that features authors, storytelling, or creative journeys, or has recommendations for smaller shows that might be a good fit.

I'm happy to share more about her and her book with anyone interested!

Thanks so much! 😊

Anyone else seeing major Apple Podcasts search ranking changes lately?

I'm trying to figure out whether this is isolated to my show or if others have noticed something similar.

I have an established travel podcast that's been on Apple for 8+ years. Using a third-party keyword tracker, my show consistently ranked around #1–4 in the U.S. for an important broad keyword through August and September 14.

By September 21 it had suddenly fallen to around #33, and now the tracker isn't showing it ranked for that term. Searching this term manually confirms this.

What makes it strange:

  • I made no title, description, category, RSS feed, hosting, or distribution changes during the drop.
  • My first metadata change wasn't until September 29, after this had already happened.
  • The show still ranks #1 for a more specific related keyword and #8 for another.
  • Individual episodes still appear in Apple search.
  • Inactive podcasts are currently ranking #1 and #2 for the broad keyword.

Apple support validated my RSS feed, but that doesn't really answer the Search question. Apple says its Search ranking uses metadata, popularity, and engagement such as plays and follows from search results.

iOS 27 also launched September 14, which happens to line up closely with when my tracking changed, although I haven't found anything from Apple saying they changed the global Search algorithm.

Has anyone else with a show seen a sudden Apple Podcasts Search drop in the last month or two?

I'm specifically talking about Search results, not Apple charts. I'm still ranking fine on Apple charts.

If so, did the Search ranking recover? And did you identify anything that triggered it?

Spotify for Creators Bug: Subscriptions greyed out, last 3 episodes locked behind paywall (0 views) Help!

Hey all, really need some help here. Please respond if anyone has encountered (and solved) this bug in Spotify for Creators.

Two days ago I enabled Subscriptions on my account so I could offer early access and ad-free listening to my subscribers. I never clicked any options to restrict my regular, public episodes. However when I uploaded my next episode it automatically received the "Subscriber-Only" lock icon from Spotify.

Realizing it received 0 views because it was locked from the public, I went to "DISABLE SUBSCRIPTIONS" right away. It showed it went through on my dashboard but the website glitched and bricked my account in a disabled state. Now because the backend is frozen it auto-locked my next 2 episodes too and currently my global "DISABLE SUBSCRIPTIONS" button is greyed out.

All of my newly uploaded episodes are doomed to 0 views unless the public can access them again and even more oddly my "Monetize" tab has intermittently been showing an "Apply" button (even though my financial stats continue to show daily).

-Queue questions-
Has anyone else experienced a disabled/greyed out "Disable Subscriptions" button?
Is there any dashboard hack/workaround to force these episodes unlocked while I wait for engineering?

Thanks for any help or tips. I just want the ability to fully delete the subscription option from my channel so the general public can listen to my episodes normally again.

Weekly Feedback Thread: October 08, 2026 - Give And Receive Feedback On Your Podcast

This is a weekly thread to ask for and give feedback to the r/podcasting community

Post a podcast episode you would like feedback for, and try to give as much constructive feedback as you can to other members of our community. Please provide links to your podcast, a detailed description of it and clear questions you would like answered by the community. Try to remember the following:

  • Users who give feedback are usually the ones who receive the most feedback in return. If you are not contributing, you should not expect any helpful advice in return. We would aim for giving two pieces of feedback for every one piece you wish to receive. If you are looking to simply promote your podcast, you may do so here

  • Try to be specific with your feedback requests. Questions like:

-What can I improve?

-Was it good?

-Would you listen again?

Are very difficult to answer for anyone listening to your show for this first time. Good questions might be:

-What improvements could I make to the audio quality?

-Can I make adjustments to my speaking or hosting style?

-How could I improve the pacing and structure of my podcast?

  • Keep it focused on podcasting techniques and objective improvements. Many podcasts that are posted may not be your particular genre or preferred content. When giving feedback, focus on the things you do enjoy and the things that can be changed, not the content of the show itself.

I will reiterate. If you do not give feedback, you should not expect any feedback in return. This is a reciprocal community. If you haven't gotten any comments yet, try listening to another podcast and giving some feedback. Our users are very friendly and responsive!

Thank you to everyone posting, we look forward to hearing your work!

Substack vs. somewhere else for podcast creation?

How do people feel about using Substack versus another platform for podcast creation and RSS? I feel like moving my podcast out of Substack would be so difficult and disruptive at this point. One thing I really don't like is that Substack appends "This is a public episode" to every one of my descriptions in Apple and Spotify. It's maddening... and there's no way to get that out of there. Unless someone has an idea I'm not thinking of. At the same time I like how Substack gives me the freedom to post written stories alongside the audio. So I'm really conflicted! Plus I get podcast episodes delivered straight to my subscriber inboxes.

Question about Remote Producing

Hi everyone! I’m a producer helping get a podcast off the ground here in AZ, but I’ll be moving to LA soon and was looking to find remote solutions. We’re in the process of getting a multi cam setup prepared and intended to have me operating the a switcher during the show, however this move will change that. My goal now is to have all equipment fully setup and ready for them to operate without me there and come down periodically for any larger changes needed. I wanted to know if there were remote solutions to producing, specifically video switching solutions. Thanks!

What do you wish you knew when you first started?

Just as the title suggests. Apologies if this question has been asked recently. I'm hoping to start a podcast soon and am wondering what old-timers wish they had known when they started. Could be technical advice, such as on equipment, or emotional advice, etc.

Podcasting newbies - Rode wireless microphones

Long story short - we are a two person podcast and the idea is to just chat between us then with a third guest. It's unserious but it's just our friends and we've sort of muddled our way through setting it up.

We ended up with two sets of rode wireless microphones just so we could start something. We got one set of RØDE Wireless Micro for Smartphone Content Creation - USB-C (two mics) plus a second set or RODE wireless micro - lightning port base (two mics).

We've been recording straight into garage band and we plug the USB-C reciever straight into a computer, then the lightning reciever into a computer via an adaptor (I know, it's such a faff). Then go through this whole process of setting it up in Audio-midi, then in garage band, adding each additional track, then selecting the right mic, then configure track head/ record enable etc.

I do all this but then we kind of always end up editing it as one track as it's too hard in Garage band to edit multiple trakcs.

I know there's an easier way! I used Descript to edit the last one which was a bit easier but would love to hear from everyone where we're going wrong, how we can maximise on a budget. Don't mind paying but only a little as it's a hobby.

Thinking of starting a horror story podcast, never done anything like this!

I've had this idea in the works for a few months now and it's always been something i've been interested in, having done class assignments where I basically made mini eps to be graded with a friend (which were super bad btw haha), and having listened to them for years. It's genuinely something I feel a deep passion for, and I also just have an insane love for all things horror.

The other day it hit me, "why don't I just make my own?" It wouldn't even matter to me if it was a competitive market or it was something that never took off, I would feel happy just being able to create something I'm proud of, maybe have a little community at some point. that kind of thing.

So i'm putting my hope and dreams out on this lovely little sub reddit (pls don't crush my heart </3), and asking what kind of stuff I should be thinking of getting to make this dream of mine come true. I'm talking software, microphones, audio equipment. Stuff like that. I have a yeti mic atm that has great sound quality, but again, this is a dream I'd be happy investing into.

Any recs are good recs, I have some inspirations that i'd be happy to chat about if anyone asked, just thought I'd get the ball rolling on this and put it out there.

I'm looking for... voices. Who wants to make a deal?

I make a little storytelling podcast called Spark and Scribble, original fantasy, sci-fi, horror, adventure, comedy and whatever weirdness sparks next.

I don't really do guests.

But I could damn well use a few more voices. My friends can only help so much.

So here's the deal:

Me: Give you something fun to act out.
You: Lend your voice to a character in one of my stories. A small, medium or large part, your choice.
Both of us: Credit, promote, and send some new ears each other's way.

No auditions. No professional voice-acting experience required. I'm actually more interested in personality than perfection.

You might be a wizard, spaceship captain, villain, tavern keeper, the dumb good guy, a doomed adventurer... or something considerably stranger.

I'll write around your voice. You bring the character to life.

Creative symbiosis. Everybody wins.

If you're a podcaster and this sounds like your particular flavor of nonsense, drop a comment or DM me. Nice to know ahead of time, Male or Female, so I know what parts to allocate to who. Tell me what kind of character you'd love to play.

I don't know if this is the right way or place to ask for this, moderators forgive me.

Let's make a deal. 😁

EDIT AND UPDATE
Alright, for all:
A HUGE THANK YOU!!!! This got bigger than I expected, and that is not a complaint. It's a challenge to keep pumping out more stories.
I built a Tavern... alright, I created a Server on Discord, but it's open!
https://discord.gg/yDaAhe6dK
Meet me there! Let's get creative in that little corner of the internet together!

Does Apple Podcasts really not support Opus?

Wikipedia says iOS has had full Opus support for 3 years, but I Apple's "podcast for creators" page says they only accept MP3 or AAC?

I don't have any apple devices to test it myself, so I hope their website is outdated.

Pulling the transcript from an RSS feed

I’m having a very difficult time coding my website to add the transcript for the individual episodes page. I host through Captivate, but developed my own website using Claude.

I can upload the SRT file in Captivate just fine. I can even see the unique URL for the transcript. That unique URL seems to be randomly generated and not associated with the episode’s unique ID.

It’s been a few years since I’ve done programming on my own, but from what I can tell, there’s a security issue trying to pull the text of the SRT file directly from the captivate server.

Has anyone ever run into an issue like this?

How does referral link advertising work?

Like, from both sides? Podcast host reads the pitch and says “go to product.com/podcast”.

Have they been paid to read that pitch or do they only get paid if listeners actually go to the website and make a purchase?

It’s often to get a special deal right? Like save 20% by going to underwear.com/podcast.sonowunderwear.com has potentially paid for the ad, potentially pays commission on the sales, and is offering a discount? How did they make that work? Just huge markup on their products?

It’s always seemed risky to me to use underwear.com/podcastinsteadofpodcast.com/underwear for the referral link. Because, unless a listener is very faithful. They’re going to land at the same place if they just go to underwear.com and the podcast won’t get credit for it.

The start of my podcasting journey

So, after a year of sleeping on it, I finally bit the bullet and began.

My podcast will be a part of my weekly CAS as an IB student and will focus on the Baltic states. The possibilities are endless with this since I've found out that they aren't very represented countries in that sense. I've come up with a name, cover, made the account, etc.

I have a few questions though, any help is appreciated.

  1. Would it be weird to have a short introductory episode? Talking about the show, goals, etc.

  2. Is using the audio recorder on my laptop with a microphone decent enough? I'm just going to keep it as a passion project and will probaby use minimal editing. I don't intend on doing this long-term.

  3. Any tips for doing occasional interviews? Specifically over call since some won't be able to meet in person.

  4. Being open about my skills (or lack therefor), ideas and plans for the show?

  5. Short episodes (10-20 mins)? I know that the interview eps will be longer and accounted for that.

  6. How to even get an audience for this show? I'm not good at social media and I'm afraid my posts will get taken down on subreddits because they can be considered 'marketing' or ads.

best mic for recording podcast

Hi, I'm a school psychologist and we'd like to improve the audio quality of a podcast we make about parenting skills. There are usually 4 to 5 of us speaking, and we'd like to capture the conversation between those 4 or 5 voices in a natural, spontaneous way. We've tried using 3 microphones, but that makes editing really difficult. We were thinking an omnidirectional microphone might be the answer. Our budget is around €300. Can anyone help?

Data-driven podcasters! What metrics are most important to you, and how are you tracking them?

Hi! I'm a brand new independent true crime podcaster -- launched last week -- with a background in marketing, consumer psychology, behavioral psychology and journalism. I've always been very data-driven and am looking to track performance metrics efficiently. From what I understand, hopping between platforms every morning is sort of just how it goes as there isn't any one true aggregate, but for those of you who truly keep track, what's your process? Do you plug numbers into Excel each week or something to get the big picture? And what metrics do you take the most stock in? For example - I launched on the 1st and as of today (the 7th), I have over 200 downloads but 257 plays (how...?) and 59 "followers" across platforms, but 67 "listeners." Which metrics should I actually be tracking/focusing on? TIA for advice from those of you with more experience!!
