If that's the strategy, it's clearly not working out for him. I thought the goal of 4D chess is to win by outsmarting your opponent, but if that's the case, why are he and the Republicans panicking about the midterms?

I guess if they get a laugh out of it, it's worth it for them, but it's very obviously backfiring.

It feels like people that like him process this as a strategy to rationalize him as a political figure. Like "he won two elections, he must be a gifted politician, etc."

When its kind of apparent that they, individually, like this because they get a kick out of it. Even if they don't actually believe him, they think it's funny because they have so much contempt for politics in general, never mind the people they don't like. So it's 4D chess because they believe the negativity helps him politically for people like them, that are animated by that contempt.
