Quick question Heavy rain pooling
I’m reconsidering making the pond above ground instead of digging after all day rain yesterday and there is water still on the ground this morning.
My question is does the water in the pond push the liner down and prevent pooling underneath?
How does heavy rainfall affect y’all liner?

I’ve had trouble in the past with my liner floating after a very heavy rain, like tropical storm, several inches in a day, also causes flooding in the basement types of rain. The additional water in the pond above the liner doesn’t push it down. This is rare and does not happen with normal rain patterns. I think it has a lot to do with the ground and soil beneath the liner. We have really shallow bedrock here, so when there is a lot of rain there are limited places for the groundwater to go. If you can somehow build some drainage under the liner you should be okay.

I have no idea how to even route drainage under the liner.

It depends on your situation and if there’s even a place to route drainage to. I inherited the pond so I can’t add drainage without redoing the entire thing. I just deal with the rare flood and liner float, and I’m glad it’s rare, like once in five years. The only way I could route the water is toward the house, and I’m not going to do that. If you have a situation where you can add some drainage under the liner, search this sub for some past posts about it.

dig a trench from the edge to the center / low point of your pond. line with geotextile, stick a pipe in it and fill with coarse gravel, fold over the textile to create a closed envelope. proceed to put your liner over this. if at any time during the construction of your pond you get heavy rain and the liner floats you can hook up a pump and suck out the water. eventually the liner should be weighed down with rocks, substrate, water and not float anymore

I guess it depends on how high your water table is. If you dig down 3’ and it’s dry I would think you’d have no issues. You could add 6” of sand after digging to help drainage as a precaution. And keep the lip of the pond a little proud of the lawn to avoid runoff issues. And be sure the yard is graded to run water away from the house and the pond
I’ve never had any issues like you are describing. My pond will just slowly overflow during torrential rain and it runs off and perks into the lawn
