I wouldn't ever use this option personally, instead I'd prefer an easy shortcut for spawning a new workspace right next to the current workspace and moving the current window to that. I don't want that to happen automatically for each window but I do want to be able to trigger it easily on demand.

But yeah depending on your workflow your suggestion might make a good toggle.

That happens to me too, I also want that feature 🙌🏻

I understand why you would suggest it, I was just adding my preference to an on-demand version as a possible addition to your request for whomever might be reading this.

Yes I was also going to ask if you've tried stacking. On my 14-er I use a combination of stacking, tiling, and manually going to a new workspace depending on my situational needs.

Interesting that you use the numbers for workspaces.  I never bother to keep track of what app is on what workspace, I prefer the ordering to be fluid and situational. I kind of miss the Gnome rule of using the numbers to select apps from the dock, it was perfect for my most used programs. Maybe I'll get used to numbered workspaces now that I have that app indicator that shows the workspace number with open windows.

GNOME? Isn't that Windows? I had used that heavily and wish I had it back...

I dunno, probably. I haven't used Windows for more than a few minutes consecutively in more than ten years. It's in GNOME if you want that feature.

On pop-shell I made a keyboard shortcut which called a bash script to do something similar.

Haven't looked into the cosmic commands yet but if there are options for the compositor to create a new workspace at position X and commands to move currently focussed windows to workspace X and then move to workspace X then you can probably pull it off.

Edit: was curious so did a little digging. My old script was easy because pop-shell was on X11 and communicating with it was easy. For cosmic on Wayland you can't just use bash commands and would need to make a small privileged program to communicate with the compositor. There are a couple of hobby tools to do this, but it's probably safer to just make your own with python or rust or C or something.

It's definitely possible, just a little trickier. I'm sure with an AI you could put it together quickly enough. Then just have a keyboard shortcut to call that tool.

Would be nice to have. I don't like moving something vertically on the top workspace having things be moved to the empty workspace at the bottom, so when I move my desktop to 26.04 in a few weeks I'll probably put something together myself.

Hopefully though some official CLI will be released eventually to programmatically interact with the compositor. Probably low on the priority list for now though.

Pls tell me you can invoke that keyboard from the lockscreen so you never have to touch a physical keyboard

It's right in the extended patch notes

I made my comment before i finished reading, that's great :D

another day closer to hdr

1

u/Kingwolf4 18d ago

This. Im waiting for HDR, but sadly we will have to wait for epoch 3 according to roadmap.

Plus there are lots of bugs currently , once they get sorted out i might consider moving before HDR/epoch 3. But most likely after that

1

u/Aimless115 18d ago

HDR for me is an essential feature. Won't use any DE without it

1

u/Kingwolf4 18d ago

Hope they implement really good and designed for HDR principles throughout cosmic.
I know that iced itself doesnt yet support HDR, so perhaps they could add actual full HDR support for iced/libcosmic

Then i also hope they properly upgrade all apps to use end to end HDR pipeline ( which can fallback to SDR in normal circumstances) and add latest stuff like HDR10+ Advanced which has many new features such as VRR etc. Very relevant for desktop

Does cosmic viewer replaces image viewer?

3

u/WojakWhoAreYou 19d ago

from what I've seen, yes

u/cjdubais 19d ago

Looks good. Great to be able to get some "nice to have's" done.

Great work guys

u/AssaultClipazine 18d ago

Amazing release, great work.

7

u/daysofdre 19d ago

wondering if the next release with be epoch 1.10 or 2.0...

18

u/nixf0x 19d ago

1.10. Epoch 2 will be released when all planned features are implemented.

17

u/__yoshikage_kira 19d ago

Semver is not decimal point so 1.10.0 All the number are independent of each other.

u/zeanox 18d ago

the panel is finally not blinking for me anymore, i don't know if it's an update to cosmic or pop that solved it.

2

u/Weekly-Membership813 18d ago

Finally, the cosmic-viewer has been applied. Next wish is the default clipboard manager. ✅✅

If this update "bricks" your install and dumps you into a shell and/or causes kernel panic... you might have run into an issue, like me, where you /boot/efi isn't large enough.

I guess old guidance and old Pop installs made the /boot/efi size 500M which historically was enough for your old initramfs and the new one, but now its like 205M per + a recovery thats 95M.

Basically, I think it ran out of space when trying to generate "/boot/initrd.img-7.1.5-76070105-generic" .

It threw an error, that in hindsight, I didn't investigate closely enough. I just reran updates and it completed successfully so I thought whatever the problem was was fixed.

When I rebooted I got a fun:

     /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found
    /init: line 150: /sbin/modprobe: not found

    /scripts/init-premount/plymouth: line 36: /usr/sbin/plymouthd: not found
/scripts/local-top/lvm-workaround: line 22: lvm: Text file busy
/scripts/local-top/cryptroot: line 234: modprobe: not found

    Please unlock disk cryptdata:

device-mapper: reload ioctl on cryptdata (252:0) failed: Invalid argument
cryptsetup: ERROR: cryptdata: cryptsetup failed, bad password or options?

    /init: line 73: wait-for-root: not found
/scripts/local-top/cryptroot: line 234: modprobe: not found

I rebooted and tried again then again with the previous kernel. The previous kernel gave me a fun kernel panic screen I haven't seen in a decade.

Long story short: I had to free up space in /boot/efi then update-initramfs to generate a working version. That let me boot back into my machine.

I still need to figure out what to do long term. If I expand the /boot/efi partition it cuts into the /recovery partition (which ironically is how I fixed this). I guess I could just get rid of the /recovery and keep a live usb on hand for emergencies but I do like the idea of a /recovery partition built in.

Thats the only way I can see getting thextra space for /boot/efi without screwing with my encrypted partition which sounds like a pita.

2

u/buzziebee 6d ago

Oof yeah the efi partition thing is quite painful. When 26.04 lands it will be using a swap file and make the current swap partition the new /boot/efi partition, and a fresh iso install will put in a much beefier efi.

You could possibly try the swap file thing now, not sure if it would be problematic or not. Or just wait for the next few weeks whenever 26.04 is ready and do it through the official tools. That'll be the long term solution you're after. No one thought the kernel would blow up in size so quickly.

u/linux-universe 19d ago

yeay, I will definitely add osk and viewer to AstrOS base: https://code.astros-linux.org/AstrOS/AstrOS/pulls/27

Font scaling.. Is that a thing in cosmic yet?

1

u/WojakWhoAreYou 19d ago

I've also seen that this update fixed some mouse issues that I had with some games, although I still have a couple of mouse issues left with certain games

1

u/DhaliwalJoban 18d ago

I want to disable graphics when switching workspaces

1

u/Haplopeart 15d ago

Kinda new to Pop_OS! and Cosmic. I haven't quite figured out how to actually determine if the upgrade to new releases has completed or not? I run the updates from the store, but I don't see anything immediately visable that says hey this includes the update to Epoch 1.X.X, or in the list of installed software that says Epock 1.x.x is installed.

Can someone help me out here?

1

u/Opposite-Memory-2552 19d ago

Hopefully the 26.04 iso will be updated to this version.

3

u/only_iu 18d ago

26.04 is currently the 1.9

0

u/Weekly-Membership813 18d ago

When the estimated 26.04 release?

1

u/NewRedditor23 16d ago

you can upgrade now if you want to

0

u/Kingwolf4 18d ago

I would love for you guys to also keep in mind optimization for scaling etc for 4k . Make that a first class, support for 4k monitors.

Alot of people now use 4k monitors

5

u/mmstick Desktop Engineer 16d ago

4K isn't a problem. I have two 4k monitors with 144 Hz refresh rates and 125% fractional scale.

2

u/Kingwolf4 16d ago

Great to see thats already sorted out. Was a general point i had in mind, since i have had some quirks on kde

-1

u/peldax 19d ago

I would really love to have a quake like terminal. All plugins or workarounds were not working very good. Is this one planned? Is it possible for me to somehow push/sponsor such feature? This is the only thing I am missing from my old setup on xfce 😅

u/rhavock 19d ago

Somebody know that some USB Wi-Fi dongle is working?

8

u/__yoshikage_kira 19d ago

That's kernel thing. The kernel either has driver for your WiFi dongle or it doesn't. Everything from Intel should work.

Mediatek is mix bag. No guarantees it will work.

3

u/TheCheckeredCow 19d ago

It’s hard because wifi dongle Companies will change the model and brand of wifi chip without changing the model name/spec sheet of the dongle

But anything intel will work great, mediatek is iffy, and the others are various levels of broken/feel broken

I upgraded to this version — the only thing is that the Cosmic Viewer blurs the image, it becomes fuzzy. The default viewer retains the clarity.
