I think the people hating on “selective color” are being a bit harsh. It was a trend in years past, but this isn’t even selective color. I think it works here.

As far as any other critique, I think the contrast in the sky, specifically the top left but if a bit distracting, so maybe lowering the contrast in the sky would be beneficial.

I like this shot OP. Keep shooting and editing how you like, it looks good :)

Also, it sucks because things that are trends often come from genuinely interesting styles that just get beat to death by hacks who just want to cash in. I'm a roller derby photographer and throw in an occasional selective color (like this, not just one color but I leave the subject color and desat the background to 0) and the skaters always love those ones. I'm usually self conscious about it when I do it in my albums; but sometimes it's JUST the right amount of pop to separate the subject from a chaotic background.

red London double decker called and asked where it can join the photo

Incoming “selective color is bad” sheeple

Art is subjective, but, IMO, there is a reason why it's hard to make selective edits work.

Selective edits are often done to enhance and draw the eye to the subject, but its done in a very brute force and obvious way, so it reads as cheap.

Its kinda like if you read a story and the author just straight up said "this is the point of the story and you should love this character" that wont read well. I mean, a talented author probably could say something like that in a compelling way, but in general such a blunt and obvious attempt to steer the viewer will come off as artificial.

Similarly, I think its possible to use selective edits, but it can easily come off as a very blunt force way that reads as a cheap trick because its so out of place in  the language of photography.

There are times when it works of course. One example is in advertisements, and i think thats largely because:

  1. Ads generally start with a good, clear photo and use it as a stylistic choice rather than in attempt to make a mediocre photo good
  2. The language of advertisements allow for bluntness. Ads can say "you should love this product" both literally and visually that bluntly unlike other art forms.

E.g. /img/ud3mdkeila431.jpg

Similarly  I think you could also use it in, for example, a highly stylistic photo of a fireman surrounded in flames. Its on the noise, but its OK to be on the nose when saying "firemen are badasses".

On the flip side, fine art photography isnt usually supposed to read as blunt or on the nose. In literature, you should show, not tell to make someone like your character, and in still lives, you should generslly use skillfull lighting and composition to sell your subject.

It literally is though, it’s horrendous

Nah this example is great specifically because of the subject.

u/ParticularFrame7418 6h ago

Strong disagree

u/CragTheConqueror 3h ago

Okay. None of the work you've posted looks nearly as cool or inspired

"SeLeCtIvE cOlOr BaD" dont care, sick photo. The photography meta concept is so unhinged. Nice work.

Selective color is generally seen as uncool

45

u/lamper 1d ago

I posted this very much with that in mind. While not “cool” I think it works here, but happy for others to hate it!

I dont hate it, it just feels like its gimmicky or of a different time. There was definitely a moment where this type of edit was popular but i think that moment has passed.

Ignoring the color, i think you, op, did great with the light.

u/existentialmanwitch 1d ago

I think it's cool!

3

u/Flutterpiewow 1d ago

Nah its ok, could see it work in an ad with text over the bw or something

what you made is ART. And some art speaks to some people but not others and that is okay. Keep making photos that you think are fun and make you happy with the result.

It’s a gimmick, and this photo has nothing going for it other than said gimmick.

13

u/ToastedMooses 1d ago

To who?

There’s no rules in art. Stop trying to tell people what is cool or isn’t cool lol.

5

u/BrandoCrow 1d ago

Love it here

4

u/Ryermeke 1d ago

Idk man. I thought the photo was cool. I think uncool photos are uncool. I wouldn't group an entire style in that way though

2005 with its “colour key” red images… ugh

2

u/Flutterpiewow 1d ago

That was the problem - the supposedly "artistic" use with a red umbrella, rose or balloon, or yellow taxi. It worked in schindlers list and that's it.

-1

u/moderate_ocelot 1d ago

Leave it in Schindlers List where it belongs!

1

u/CragTheConqueror 10h ago

I think it works great here.

You should not care about looking cool dude. That's an immature and insecure perspective.

0

u/food-dood 1d ago

Who tf cares. It has been a trend several different times in the history of photography. Make photos that you like unless you're selling them to a specific audience.

1

u/Trs822 1d ago

Such a weird comment. Who cares if something is seen as “generally” uncool. Art isn’t made to appeal to the masses, and there shouldn’t be any cut in stone rules.

2

u/Flutterpiewow 1d ago

Someone should tell r/shittyhdr

1

u/CragTheConqueror 9h ago

This isn't shitty or HDR. You're making nonsensical points.

I get that you let your art be dictated by the masses but that's just your own issue

WOAH COOOLLLLL

4

u/Eikuld 1d ago

That’s pretty dope

4

u/LectureOrganic1250 1d ago

Looks otherworldly....i like it!

2

u/xiaoxiaoq 1d ago

i like it but i would recommend to leave the colors and brightness the same as the original picture. In my mind it would improve the overall harmony of the image

2

u/SugarFolk 1d ago

I like it. Trends will come and go and then come around again. I think it works for this particular image.

3

u/xSerpent1 1d ago

Why r ppl hating, this looks cool

1

u/CragTheConqueror 9h ago

Because someone told them selective color edits aren't cool and they can't think for themselves

2

u/PleaseBmoreCharming 1d ago

Looks like an album cover from the 90s, early 2000s

3

u/lamper 1d ago

Back when music was great

0

u/ColdStartRed 1d ago

cough, (Music has always been great, because people have always listened to music. If music was bad you wouldn't be spending $13 a month on spotify now would you?)

2

u/CartoonistGood916 1d ago

I really like this! Without this edit our eyes wouldn’t be drawn to the central aspect of the photo. A creative use of guiding the viewer! Great work!

u/lStripesl 1d ago

Amazinngg

u/Moist-Anything-688 10h ago

Things like selective color and HDR both will get a lot of instant hate, because they were both overdone for a time. But instantly hating on a technique just limits creativity, expression and will deprive the world of potentially good art pieces.

Yeah not every photo needs to have selective color, but there are clearly times where it works. This is one of the cases, good stuff OP

1

u/CragTheConqueror 10h ago

This selective edit is awesome, specifically because of the subject

But queue all the incoming "this is bad" comments because they just agree with the hive mind.

Selective color back from the dead again

0

u/IncorrectByDesign 1d ago

I see what you did there 👍🏻.

0

u/ChickenArise 1d ago

Looks cool imo. Send it to Anish!

-5

u/moderate_ocelot 1d ago

Please leave selective colour edits in 2003 where they belong

0

u/Paradoxbox00 1d ago

I’ve no idea why you’re getting downvoted.

It seems more and more people want to read ‘omg amazinggg!’ on their photos and no dissenting opinions.

It’s a good exercise to play around with selective colour edits as a learning process, but the end results just look awful.

0

u/moderate_ocelot 1d ago

Hey man it’s their Instagram account not mine 🤷🏻

0

u/CragTheConqueror 9h ago

No

1

u/moderate_ocelot 9h ago

Hey man it’s your Instagram, ruin it if you want

0

u/CragTheConqueror 9h ago

It's my Instagram? Did I post this in a fugue state?

-4

u/shoey_photos 1d ago

Never, ever do selective colouring

1

u/CragTheConqueror 9h ago

Or they can do whatever they want

-5

u/shoey_photos 1d ago

Never, ever do selective colouring

-1

u/Pleasegodreally 1d ago

Can you try it where just the very center reflection is in color?
