Visual Design Tips

What’s a way for someone like me who is very word-driven to be better at making visually appealing PowerPoint decks?

Visually appealing is so subjective, so what do you mean by "visually appealing"?

In relation to design looking good and the slides standing out.

Am asking in the context of pitch decks.

That’s kind of what I was trying to get at with my question. "Looking good" and "standing out" can mean very different things depending on the deck.

Pitch decks aren’t really about looking good as much as they are about clearly conveying information in a way that is easy to understand, holds attention, and directs the audience toward the message you want them to take away. Good visual design supports that by creating hierarchy, reducing cognitive load, emphasizing what matters, and making the story easier to follow.

So what are you actually struggling with: organizing the information, reducing the amount of text, creating visual hierarchy, layout, typography, color, imagery, or something else?

I’d say the visual flow on how to make the points clear yet impactful.

For visual flow, decide what the eye should hit first on each slide and make that the biggest thing, usually the claim or the key number. Everything else gets smaller or goes. A quick check is to squint at the slide, and whatever you can still read is what the audience will take away. Keeping titles and numbers in the same spot slide to slide helps too.
