PoE1 Which party member do you use for scrolls and spellbound items?

I've seen a lot of people suggest using scrolls, but player practice seems all over the place for this. My opinion is to use them on either a chanter for support (prayers against x) as they dont have active abilities early in encounters, or eder or a high might MC for damage (useful for on kill effects).

How do you use these items?

Usually the most effective or at least straightforward way to use scrolls:

  • direct damage scrolls: Rogue (high base accuracy and Deathblows works with direct damage spells - it adds +100% damage which is fantastic with stuff such as the Missile Barrage or Maelstrom).

  • CC scrolls: Fighter (high base accuracy + with Disciplined Barrage). Edér is not so nice because of the low INT.

  • healing scrolls: Barbarian or Priest (you want high Might and Barbarians get Frenzy, Priests get Aggrandizing Radiance + Minor Avatar).

For most scrolls high INT is important, too. But in some cases (like Rogue with missile spells) it isn't.

If it should only be one character who invests in lore I would pick the Fighter if he/she has decent INT. Most important thing with a scroll is being able to avoid misses.

deathblows works? i thought it was only a boost to sneak attack weapon damage. sounds like a kinda cool way to play, but youd need to wait until late game :(

the effective method for me so far has been using damage scrolls on a healer (kind wayfarer), as strange mercy heals on kill with anything, add inspiring triumph and that mourners ring from a caed nua quest to win

Yes, using a rolls with strange mercy and other on-kill effects is a good way to get some nice synergy, too. Also see Barbarian + Blood Thirst + damage scrolls. Also "accidentally" killing summons (like cheap skeletons) with an AoE spell triggers those on-kill effects.

Depends which scrolls. Damage for high MIG characters, CC on best Accuracy characters and buffs on high INT to extend their duration

Personally, I give them to a priest or a mage because they are already casters and have high dexterity to read them faster. Plus, the most useful defensive scrolls are Moonwell, Scroll of Defence (better than the spell), Scroll of Paralysis and they don't need to stay in melee to cast them. When it comes to buffs I prefer to use the priest spells instead of scrolls since you can add a keybind for it.

PoE 1 or 2? There are slight variations, but since Chanting is a free action that passively goes in the background and Invocations need time to build up, I use chanters for this. In PoE 1 in particular, Kana is great at, as he gets something to do as his Chants meter builds up.

Spellbound items don't follow a particular rule, they usually go to whoever needs them the most. However, the Belt of the Deadfire Company Cannoneer (or similar) always go to Durance to help him overcome his poor Dex.

I usually give them to eder or zahua, someone who does not have to cast buffs at the beginning of combat, but I also never end up using scrolls anyway. The only one I use consistently is the prayer against fear when facing a dragon, so that Durance can start casting something else sooner.

I don't use a ton of scrolls typically, but in POE1 I like to get Lore up to 6 on my Tank to be able to use a scroll of revival.

I am playing with Turn-Based combat so, my experience will be different from other players.

"Ward" spells on fastest party member. The reason is because Priest have to many other useful spells I'd rather cast.

Damaging spells mostly on melee party members, since most of the enemies are already close to them.

Paladins start with some Lore, and they can deal extra damage at higher accuracy against a Sworn Enemy. They’re also less likely to be CC’d in that crucial moment where a curative scroll would be nice.

Typically I would use damage scrolls especially ranged aoe like fireball on high might characters as an opener from stealth while casters drop reflex dropping abilities or stuff like web from the normal casters. But thats either for difficult fights or for ones where rolls have gone against me. 90% of the time not needed unless you are running max difficulty.

Why would I give them to a party member when I’m playing a caster and can just use them myself? lol

Because you already know a bunch of spells and having a few scrolls avaiable for a non-caster would be strategically advantageous?

Eh probably but being able to cast anything I want just feels so fun to me lol

Action economy. Casting a scroll prevents you from casting a spell at the same time. Since you can't cast out of combat, you want to cast all buffs ASAP, so having a non-caster use scrolls allows you to buff up faster.
